Wolf awakens

679 Words
I rolled over in bed, trying to get comfortable again. It had been late by the time I was dropped home from the party and I certainly wasn't ready to wake up yet. "You sure do love sleep," a soft voice laughed.  I shot up in bed and looked around, trying to figure out where the voice came from. It wasn't a voice I'd ever heard before and yet somehow, it felt familiar. "Woah chill girl, you aren't going to see me anywhere. I'm your wolf, Elara," the voice chuckled again. I slowed my breathing and sank back into the bed a little. "Um, hello Elara. I'm Cassandra." "I know who you are dummy, I've been with you your whole life. It's only just now that we have been able to communicate."  I thought for a moment and then it twigged, today was my birthday. I was 18 now and that meant my wolf and I were now connected and I could try to shift. Holy s**t, I could shift. I wonder what Elara looks like? "Haha, you'll have to wait and see on that one Cassie, but for sure our mate will love us,"  she purred. "Hold on one second, who said anything about a mate? I don't want a mate," I firmly told her. "I wouldn't be so sure about that if I were you babe, but I guess time will tell," she laughed again. Why was I getting the feeling she knew something I didn't? I didn't have too much time to ponder things, as before I knew it my bedroom door was flung open and my mother was rushing in. "My baby girl is 18!" she cried, throwing her arms around me. "Where has the time gone?" "Moooooom," I begged. "Please chill, it is so early." Over my favourite breakfast of pancakes, I filled mom in on my chat with Elara. She was so excited I had met my wolf, and I think almost as excited as I was to see what she looked like. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be spending the day together as she had work to do to prepare for the party later. "I really hate to ask you this on your birthday, but could you do me a huge favour sweetie? I'm so swamped today and there is so much to do to prepare for the party. If I drop you off in town, would you mind waiting for a few bits to be prepared for me and then bringing them over to the pack house? I'll be sure to sneak you some cake home," my mom winked at me. "Of course mom, anything to make things a little easier for you," I smiled back. My mother sure did work hard. She was second in command to the head omega, which meant she had a lot to organise and a lot of responsibilities. She loved her role and always gave it her all, but I sometimes got the impression that she felt bad expecting me to take on the omega role. It was as if she was embarrassed for me. We both got ourselves ready, and hopped in the car on the way to town. I had a few shops to collect bits from, and my mom would arrange for someone to pick me up once I'd gotten everything. Luckily, everything was already prepared so I didn't have too much waiting around to do, and all that was left was to drop everything to my mom. I looked around for her a little at the pack house, but I couldn't concentrate with Elara pacing in my head. I didn't know what had gotten her so agitated, but I needed to get all of this stuff to my mom so I didn't disrupt her schedule.  As I was wandering around the pack house with arms full of stuff, I once again found myself walking straight into a hard chest. I peered up over my load, ready to apologise, when I was once again met with piercing green eyes. It was as if time stood still as I looked into his eyes, and the only thing I could hear was my wolf whispering , "Mate."
