The Escape

The lessons were finally completed in the span of a week. I was taken through ethics, cooking, and memorizing the pack’s important dates. Since that was an avenue to forget my worries briefly, I enjoyed the process, and I was back to being grounded in my room. The fact that I couldn’t cross the walls of the mansion was so suffocating. It was like a prison that was taking my breath away but there was no way to protest. Several occasions, I had come in contact with him but he wouldn’t even acknowledge my presence. That morning, I was coming from a walk and met him at the side of the huge hall. He was talking with a man with messy, sandy-blond hair that fell across his forehead. It was neither too long nor too short, which framed his face with a subtle charm. His eyes were brown and warm, fringed with thick eyelashes. Unlike the alpha, who was huge and intimidating, he had a lean, athletic build and broad shoulders. His presence was gentle and soft, his cheekbones were high with a straight nose that made him exude a gentle aura. “He’s Beta Orion,” one of the maids whispered and I nodded slightly I wanted to take another glance at him but my eyes met with the alpha’s instead. His gaze was awfully cold and blank. I couldn’t read any expression on his face and he didn’t give me the grace to stare for long before he turned to face his way. Was he thinking I would be afraid of his coldness? I was more than glad because that was what I wanted. **** “The Alpha said to get ready for the charity event in the next two days. We will be going out of the mansion,” Niamh informed me. The thought of going outside the mansion made my heart leap for joy. Finally, the chance I had wanted was being brought to me on a golden platter. “I should start planning my escape,” That was the only thing that rang in my head throughout the day. I kept looking for every means and plan to slip away during the event since it would be held in a place full of people. I couldn’t wait for the morning of the event to come. I slept well through the night and stuffed my belly in the morning to gain much energy because I would be needing it for my running escapade. I was dressed to fit the occasion and escorted to the chariot where the Alpha was waiting. I was helped up by the maids while he stood there looking at me. Assured that I was set to go, he marched to his horse and climbed it at a go. I was already picturing how uncomfortable the ride with him would be but seeing how he chose to ride a horse, I couldn’t thank him enough. That was the first time of going out after being in the mansion for almost a month. The captain I had seen at the border was leading the troop till we got to the large square. The place was a sprawling open space surrounded by sturdy stone buildings. It had timber-framed upper floors with colored shutter. The pavement was made of cobblestone with a large stone fountain at the center. Its basin was filled with clear water that reflected the hues of the surrounding buildings and it flowed out through the majestic stone wolf. I was helped out of the carriage and led to the side adorned with the alpha’s crest. In no time, we were surrounded by the guards. At the other side, the savory aroma of roasted meat, freshly baked breads, and other foods was coming from food stalls set up around the square. His arrival was announced and the crowd erupted into cheers. I didn’t know that he was that loved. The sound of laughter filled the air as different activities went on by the side. They were all thanking him for the things he had done and praising him as he was escorted to his seat, which was at the far end of the other side. Since we didn’t sit together, it made me happier that my plans would be carried out with little or no obstacle. Several performances commenced, announcements were made for people who needed food to move to a section and food was served to everyone before the case hearing section rolled in. That was my perfect time that I had been waiting for. I motioned to one of the maids to come closer. “Please, lead me to the restroom.” She nodded with immediate effect and walked forward to lead me there. It was a small building located in a quiet alley adjacent to the square. The privy was simple and built with stone walls and a dirt floor. It had a single, narrow window high above the door that permitted light to illuminate the space. Although there was a smell of damp earth, it was pretty clean. The small, rusty latch secured the door to ensure privacy. I did my thing and reached for some water in a large clay jug by the corner to cleanse myself. I got out and motioned that we should go. We were halfway back to the square when I exclaimed that my ornament had fallen off. I had removed the hairpin and tucked it inside my gown, letting my hair flow over my shoulder, which was not proper for the event. The innocent maid rushed back to the restroom to check and I took off. I had taken note of the road on our way so it was quite easy for me to find my way. I shed the royal clothes off at a safe distance and ran in my poor clothes to reduce attention. I didn’t waste time; I just kept running without looking back until I saw the forest. Without thinking twice, I dashed in and forced my wolf to shift even though she proved stubborn until I threatened to jump inside the flowing river and die instead. “Bye, Damien!” I muttered and sprinted into the wood without hesitation.
