Chapter 48

“I just knew it the moment I saw you even with the mask on. You see, you might not know me but you have helped me before and I have always looked up to you as the princess ever since. Not because you’re a royal but because I have witnessed how golden your heart is. I was watching how kind you treat us, demi-humans and when you came to me, that moment has never left my heart.” Varan explained to her. “I am sorry Varan but I don’t seem to remember you but I am very grateful of how you appreciate me that much. Can I ask what happened that moment you’re talking about?” Scarlet asked him. “I was a stranger to you, as any other demi-humans there was back then. But you selflessly made this town just for us because we were all persecuted by other humans. You even declared our safety and rights to live normally and freely without harm everywhere. You did all that even when you knew that other people will backlash at your decision. But the real moment I was talking about is when you undoubtedly jumped in front of my father to protect him from an arrow that was about to shoot him. You took the shot for him even if you had no idea who he is. You were wounded but the first thing you did was to ask my father and everyone else is they were alright. That’s when I vowed to do selfless acts to others as well. You inspired me and I always thought when the chance came, I would help you in a blink of an eye. That’s how greatly you deserve it. What you don’t deserve is how you were treated by those Creagan monsters.” Varan told him as if he was reciting a lengthy speech to her. Scarlet looks at him all teary-eyed; she never realized how much she’s done with the kingdom and she would tend to always overlook all of that just because she thinks that everything that has happened now is all her fault. “Thank you, Varan. I have no words for that. It just feels so light and fulfilling to hear how I have impacted your lives. And I do felt that you are a kind being, yes I did. I want to trust you for that but it were so soon and I am struggling to trust people that easily. But now, I am assured that you are worth trusting not only because of those words you said but because I saw through you. While you told me that story, I saw through your heart how sincere you were talking and I just felt the good aura you were radiating to me. You know, I never thought you knew me the first time you saw me.” Scarlet said to him. “That’s because I know your story and that I know that anyone in your place would want to protect herself. I just waited for the right time to reveal it to you.” Varan replied with a comforting smile. He was so good in giving comfort with his smile and aura despite his features that others would find scary. “You know, I feel better now because of you. Everything that you revealed just makes me want to push myself even more to make things right. I want to continue changing lives and make a difference to a cruel world such as ours. I also want to know my people more in a deeper level.” “And remember to not be too hard on yourself because none of this is your fault. It is not our fault when a person breaks our trust. They are accountable to that and that is their choice because unlike you, they have purely ill intentions to hurt other people. And stop worrying for tonight. We will help them with all our best but we need to rest for now. Rest can be powerful if done wisely.” Varan wisely implied. After a very nice conversation that went on for an hour, they both went to rest so they could at least get some sleep before the day started again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scarlet’s POV “Thank you, Demetrius, I really appreciate it.” I uttered as the prince stood before me handing out a present. It was a portrait of me created by the prince himself. The prince suddenly grabbed my hand to kiss it gently. “You’re welcome, princess. You look so beautiful that the world ought to see your beauty! As your friend, I want to make your birthday as special as you are. I was gonna bake a cake but I know you’d just puke all over it.” Demetrius remarked. “Oh, for sure, Dem, for sure! Those cookies you last made still haven’t stopped haunting me in my sleep!” I jokingly replied to him. We have been friends for over a year now. He is so gentle and real that I genuinely appreciate all that he’s done for me so far. I am so glad that the prince is the only man who has acted like a real friend around me for quite some time now rather than a suitor who is obsessed with being with me. I know I could trust him. Oh, there he is; walking towards me with a warm smile on his face. Why does it seem like he’s being pulled backwards from me? “Hi, princess, nice to see you!” he greeted as he waved at me. He is walking but he’s not really moving forward. What is happening?? Then he started talking again. “Come over here princess…” he said gently and continued, “Come and look at what you’ve done!!!! YOU…KILLED…HIM!!! YOU KILLED HIM because you can’t marry me!! HOW DARE YOU?!!” he started to shriek with his voice turning brutally creepy and loud. I was confused and now scared that I just want to run! Run very far away from him! Run! I ran and ran without looking back until his face appeared in front of me replacing his gentle smile with a scary one! AND I JUST CAN’T BREATHE NOW!
