Chapter 4: Into the Night
The chirping of birds outside the window woke them earlier than expected.
Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting soft golden streaks across the room. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Sophia stood beside the table, enjoying a quiet moment before work.
Rose approached slowly.
There was something different about her face that morning. The tiredness beneath her eyes revealed that sleep had barely found her. She looked like someone who had spent the entire night trapped inside her own thoughts.
Sophia noticed immediately.
She had seen Rose laugh until her stomach hurt, cry until there were no tears left, and fight through difficult moments even when she wanted to give up.
So she didn’t rush her.
She simply waited.
Rose stood there for several seconds, staring at her.
Sophia finally raised an eyebrow.
“You know, you won’t continue staring at me forever. What do you want?”
Rose said nothing.
She pulled out a chair and sat down.
Sophia took the seat opposite her, slowly sipping her coffee while watching her best friend.
“You want to go back to your house?”
Rose shook her head.
“Not that.”
A faint smile touched her lips.
“I have thought about the nightclub stuff.”
Sophia immediately placed her cup on the table.
“You will go?”
Rose nodded.
“Yeah.”
Sophia’s face lit up.
“You’ve joined the bad gang.”
She picked up her coffee again and took another sip.
“Just to find a fake husband.”
Sophia immediately choked on her coffee.
“Fake husband?”
Rose nodded calmly.
“Yeah. Thinking about it, I believe a fake husband or fake boyfriend will make it more interesting.”
She paused.
“Ethan said no one can marry me because I’m a virgin. I should prove him wrong.”
Sophia stared at her.
“You are going too far, Rosy.”
“Even the romance story we read used a fake husband.”
“That’s a romance story.” Sophia shook her head. “This is reality. Nobody accepted the fake boyfriend proposal, and now you want to try a fake husband?”
Rose leaned back in her chair.
“Who knows? Maybe someone will accept.”
Sophia gave her a doubtful look.
“I’m not doing that with you.”
Rose’s faint smile disappeared.
“You want me to continue crying over Ethan?”
Sophia sighed.
“Not the fake husband stuff.”
Rose leaned forward.
“Sophia, a fake boyfriend will seem normal to Ethan. But when he hears that I’m married, he will regret losing me forever.”
Sophia stared at her.
She could see the logic behind Rose’s words, even though she didn’t like where they were leading.
“But we are taking this ridiculous idea too far.”
“Yes, I think it has to work this way.”
Rose’s voice was determined now.
“If Ethan finds out I’m married, he will be heartbroken. Then maybe you can tell him it was fake.”
Sophia’s expression softened.
“With what you’re saying now, you still want Ethan back.”
Rose lowered her head.
Her fingers nervously picked at the edge of her nail.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Sophia sighed before gently lifting Rose’s chin, forcing her to look at her.
“I know how much you love Ethan, but this is too much just to get him back.”
Rose swallowed.
“You told me before it was just a fake boyfriend. Now it’s also just a fake husband.”
Sophia nodded slowly.
“If Ethan loves you, he will come back.”
Rose looked at her.
“But what if he doesn’t?”
Her expression saddened.
Sophia reached across the table and squeezed her hand.
“Then you move on, Rose.”
The words hung between them.
Rose didn’t answer.
Instead, an idea from the romance story suddenly came to her mind.
A small smile appeared on her lips as she rested her chin on her hand.
“There comes the romance story.”
Sophia narrowed her eyes playfully.
“You fall in love with the fake husband.”
Rose laughed softly.
“You think love is really like that?”
“Yes.” Sophia leaned closer. “Teach me love, Miss Lover Girl. How did you fall for Ethan?”
Rose immediately frowned.
“Don’t remind me of that.”
Sophia noticed the change in her expression.
The lightness between them disappeared almost instantly, replaced by an uncomfortable silence.
She quickly changed the subject.
“We will be late for work.”
She stood up.
“When we come back, we are going to party. Hola!”
Rose rolled her eyes.
“I’m leaving you.”
Sophia pointed at her.
“Don’t you dare.”
⸻
The day passed quickly.
Before Rose knew it, evening had arrived.
The long-awaited night was finally here.
Sophia stood in front of her wardrobe, pulling out different dresses and holding each one against Rose as though she were preparing a model for a fashion show.
“This red one looks perfect on you.”
Rose looked at the dress before shaking her head.
“I prefer the brown one. It’s not revealing.”
Sophia rolled her eyes playfully.
“That’s the point.”
She handed Rose the dress.
“Tonight, you’re not going there as the girl Ethan hurt. You’re going as someone who knows her worth.”
She gently pushed Rose toward the bedroom.
“I’m waiting.”
Rose disappeared into the room.
Sophia returned to the mirror, fixing her earrings and checking her makeup.
Minutes later, Rose stepped out.
Sophia turned.
For a moment, she said nothing.
The brown gown fitted Rose perfectly, falling elegantly around her figure without revealing too much. Her hair framed her face beautifully, while the soft makeup brought out her features. The jewelry added a delicate sparkle, and the faint scent of her perfume followed her as she walked into the room.
Sophia’s lips slowly curved into a smile.
“Girl, you look gorgeous.”
Rose smiled shyly.
“I’m jealous of you. Your body shape is perfect, and your face card is a hundred.”
Rose laughed.
“Thank you.”
Sophia walked around her, inspecting the dress from every angle.
“This night will be interesting.”
She grinned.
“Your Prince Charming won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
Rose shook her head.
“Stop it.”
Sophia laughed before helping her with the final touches—her makeup, jewelry, and perfume.
When Rose finally stood before the mirror, she barely recognized herself.
The woman staring back at her looked confident, elegant, and beautiful.
But beneath the makeup and carefully arranged appearance, the nervousness in her eyes remained.
She touched the side of her dress.
“What am I doing?”
Sophia appeared behind her in the mirror.
“Trying something new.”
Rose gave a small smile.
⸻
A few minutes later, they arrived at Eclipse, the city’s most exclusive nightclub.
The moment they stepped out of the car, Rose stared at the enormous glowing sign above the entrance.
ECLIPSE.
She had heard about this place before.
It was expensive, exclusive, and known as a place where wealthy people came to relax and entertain themselves.
The line of luxurious cars parked outside seemed to confirm everything she had heard.
Rose slowly turned toward Sophia.
“Sophia.”
“What?”
“This is Eclipse.”
“And?”
Rose looked around uneasily.
“This place is expensive. You spent money to come here.”
Sophia waved her hand dismissively.
“Sometimes, we have to act like the rich.”
She grinned.
“Who knows? You might catch the attention of a billionaire as your fake husband. Ethan would be shocked.”
Rose’s eyes widened.
“I’m not going.”
She turned toward the car.
“You should sell the ticket and use the money for something else.”
“Rosy.”
Sophia caught her hand.
Rose stopped.
Sophia sighed.
“It’s my first time bringing you to a club. I wanted to bring you somewhere special.”
Her expression softened.
“Besides, I’ve always wanted to come here, and I’m happy I’m experiencing it with you.”
Rose looked at her.
“But Sophia…”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Sophia smiled.
“Come.”
They stepped out of the car.
Around them, couples laughed and chatted as they made their way toward the entrance. The faint pulse of music could already be heard from inside, growing louder whenever the doors opened.
Rose looked down at her dress.
For a moment, doubt crept into her mind.
Am I doing the wrong thing?
She wasn’t used to places like this.
She wasn’t even sure what she was expecting to find.
A fake boyfriend?
A fake husband?
Or simply another disaster?
Sophia reached for her hand.
Her fingers wrapped warmly around Rose’s.
“Let’s party.”
Rose looked at her best friend.
That smile was enough.
Sophia had been beside her through the heartbreak, the tears, the ridiculous fake-boyfriend search, and every embarrassing moment that had followed.
Nothing would happen to her.
At least, that was what Rose believed.
She took a breath.
Then, hand in hand with Sophia, she walked toward the glowing entrance of Eclipse.
