A short while later, Sophia arrived.
The moment she saw Rose sitting alone on the curb, her heart broke.
She rushed toward her.
“Rose.”
She pulled her into a tight hug.
That was all it took.
Rose completely fell apart.
“I broke up with Ethan, Sophia.”
Her voice cracked.
“I broke up with him.”
Sophia held her tightly.
“I know, Rosy.”
“I broke up with him.”
“I know.”
Sophia rubbed her back gently.
“You’ll get through this.”
Rose cried against her shoulder like a child. For several minutes, Sophia simply held her.
She didn’t try to force words into the situation. Sometimes pain needed silence more than advice.
When Rose finally calmed down, Sophia helped her stand. She guided her to the car and drove her home.
The entire journey was quiet. The usual conversations between them were gone.
Only the soft sound of the car engine filled the space.
When they arrived at Rose’s apartment, Sophia helped her inside.
She poured her a glass of water and placed it in her hands.
“Drink.”
Rose obeyed quietly.
Sophia pulled a chair closer and sat beside her.
She reached for Rose’s hand.
“I know how much you loved Ethan.”
Her voice was gentle.
“And I know breaking up with him wasn’t easy.”
Rose looked down.
“I’m not going to judge you for this.”
A painful silence filled the room.
Then Sophia asked softly.
“Tell me what happened.”
Rose looked away.
“Because you can’t just break up with someone you loved this much without a reason.”
She squeezed her hand.
“He did something.”
The memories returned. Every cruel word. Every accusation.
Rose swallowed.
“He said I was cheating on him.”
Sophia’s expression changed.
“What?”
Rose’s eyes filled again.
“He said because I refused to have s*x with him, I must be giving myself to another man.”
Sophia stared at her in disbelief.
“He said that?”
Rose nodded.
“He called me a slut.”
The anger on Sophia’s face appeared instantly.
“A slut?”
She stood up.
“You?”
Her voice rose.
“I’m going to kill that son of a—”
“Please, Sophia.”
Rose grabbed her hand before she could move.
She knew Sophia.
When she was angry, she was capable of anything.
Sophia took a deep breath and sat back down.
“A slut?”
She shook her head.
“Rose, you?”
She looked at her sadly.
“You’re the same person who avoids smiling too much at another man because you worry Ethan will misunderstand.”
Her voice softened.
“That is a very heavy word for someone like you.”
Rose lowered her head.
Sophia reached out and touched her shoulder.
“Don’t blame yourself.”
She sighed.
“This isn’t the first time Ethan has acted this way.”
“But this time, he went too far.”
She looked directly at Rose.
“You did the right thing.”
Rose opened her mouth.
“But—”
“No.”
Sophia stopped her gently.
“I already know what you’re going to say.”
She sighed.
“You’re going to say you shouldn’t have mentioned breaking up.”
Rose looked away.
Sophia continued.
“But Rose, listen to me.”
“He wanted this.”
“He wanted you to be the one to end it because he didn’t know how to say it himself.”
Rose looked at her phone.
“I should call him.”
Sophia immediately stopped her.
“No.”
She held her hand.
“Don’t call him.”
She softened her voice.
“If he really cares about you, he will call and apologize.”
She wiped Rose’s tears.
“Now clean your tears.”
Sophia smiled faintly.
“We’re not talking about Ethan anymore.”
She squeezed her hand.
“He should be the one fighting for you.”
But days passed.
And Ethan never called.
Instead, he sent pictures.
Pictures of himself surrounded by beautiful women.
Pictures from luxurious hotels.
Pictures designed to show Rose that he was enjoying life without her.
Every message felt like another wound.
Rose tried to ignore them.
But she couldn’t.
One night, she sat on her bed staring at her phone screen.
Ethan’s latest picture was displayed. She bit her finger anxiously. Maybe Sophia was wrong. Maybe she was the one who ruined everything.
After all, she was the one who said the word breakup.
“Maybe if I hadn’t said that…”
Her voice trembled.
“We would still be together.”
She stared at his number.
“If I apologize, maybe he’ll come back.”
Her heart fought against her mind.
She knew Sophia would be disappointed.
But she missed him.
She missed them.
Finally, she pressed call.
The ringing sounded louder than usual.
Then he answered.
“Ethan.”
Her voice was soft.
“What do you want?”
His cold response immediately hurt her.
“I miss us.”
A bitter laugh came from the other side.
“You miss us?”
He paused.
“You’re the one who broke up.”
“I didn’t mean to.”
Her voice shook.
“I’m sorry.”
Silence.
Then Ethan sighed.
“I’m not ready for your drama, Rose.”
Her heart sank.
“I can’t stay with a girl I can’t have s*x with.”
“Ethan…”
“You should move on.”
The words felt like another rejection.
“How can you say that?”
“Because it’s true.”
His voice remained cold.
“I already moved on.”
Rose froze.
“So go and marry if you want.”
He laughed.
“No guy will date you.”
Then she heard voices in the background.
His friends.
Laughing.
Rose’s chest tightened.
“Ethan…”
“Don’t call me again.”
His voice became harder.
“My new girlfriend might think I’m cheating on her.”
That was enough.
“Don’t say that to me again.”
Tears fell down her face.
“I’m not a cheater.”
“I never cheated on you.”
“I don’t care.”
His words became crueler.
“You are a cheater.”
“You just pretend.”
“A manipulator.”
“Ethan…”
She screamed his name.
But he continued.
“There you go again.”
“You’re trying to manipulate me with your words.”
“Don’t call me again, Rose.”
“I have a new girl now.”
The call ended.
“Ethan…”
She whispered his name repeatedly.
But this time, he wasn’t there to answer.
Sophia arrived just in time to catch her before she fell apart completely.
“You called him again?”
Her voice was disappointed.
“After I warned you not to?”
Rose broke down.
“You know, Rosy…”
Sophia pulled her into her arms.
“You’re very stubborn.”
Rose cried against her.
“Sophia…”
“It hurts so much.”
Sophia held her tighter.
“I know.”
“How do I continue?”
“How do I forget him?”
Sophia closed her eyes.
She hated seeing her best friend like this.
“You will.”
Her voice was certain.
“I’ll help you.”
But deep inside, both of them wondered the same thing.
Could Rose really forget Ethan?
The man who had shown her what love felt like?
Or would she eventually return to him…
and give him the one thing she had always refused?
Her body.
