The uncle who never died

2041 Words
Alexander did not sleep that night. Neither did Elena. The moment Victor Blackwood's name entered their lives, everything Alexander had believed about his family became uncertain again. He stood in front of the bedroom window, watching the empty street below. The black car was gone. Marcus had sent two security teams to search the area, but they had found nothing. No fingerprints. No cameras. No trace of the vehicle. Victor had vanished as easily as he had appeared. Elena sat on the edge of the bed, holding the letter Margaret had left behind. "Do you remember him?" she asked. Alexander remained at the window. "Pieces." "What kind of pieces?" He closed his eyes. "A man's voice." He paused. "A hand on my shoulder. A ring. A smell." "What smell?" "Smoke." Elena stood. "Your uncle smoked?" "I don't know." Alexander turned toward her. "I was seventeen. My father had spent years telling me Victor was dead. I never questioned it." "Why would he lie?" "Because he had a reason." "What reason?" Alexander walked toward the bed and picked up the photograph again. "That's what we're going to find out." Elena watched him carefully. "You're angry." "Yes." "Are you scared?" Alexander looked at her. He could have lied. The old Alexander would have. Instead, he nodded. "Yes." Elena stepped closer. "Of him?" "No." He took her hand. "Of what I'm going to remember." She squeezed his fingers. "You don't have to remember it alone." Alexander looked at their hands. That simple gesture did something to him. For years, he had believed strength meant standing alone. Now he understood that sometimes strength meant allowing someone to stand beside you. He pulled Elena closer. "I don't know what he did to us." "We'll find out." "And if the truth is worse than everything we've already discovered?" "Then we'll face that too." Alexander studied her. "You make everything sound simple." "It isn't simple." She rested her head against his chest. "But we're not the people we were six months ago." He wrapped his arms around her. "No." They stood that way for several moments. Then Marcus knocked on the door. Alexander released Elena. "Come in." Marcus entered. "We found the car." Alexander's expression changed. "Where?" "Abandoned three miles from here." "Victor?" "No." Marcus placed a photograph on the table. "The vehicle was stolen yesterday." Alexander examined it. "Any cameras?" "One." Marcus handed him a second photograph. It showed a man leaving the vehicle. The image was blurred. But Alexander recognized the posture. The way the man carried his shoulders. The slight tilt of his head. "That's him." Marcus nodded. "We enhanced the image." He placed another photograph beside it. This one was clearer. Alexander stared. Victor Blackwood. Older. Gray hair. Sharp eyes. Alive. Elena moved closer. "Where did he go?" Marcus pointed to a building in the background. "An old railway station." Alexander recognized it immediately. "My father used to own warehouses there." Marcus nodded. "Most of the property was sold twenty years ago." Alexander looked at the photograph. "Not all of it." "No." Marcus hesitated. "One warehouse is still registered to a company nobody has heard of." "Whose company?" Marcus looked at him. "Victor Blackwood." Alexander's jaw tightened. "How long has it been there?" "Twenty-two years." Silence. Elena looked at Alexander. "That's where he was hiding." Alexander nodded. "Or where he wanted us to look." --- They arrived at the warehouse just before sunrise. Marcus insisted on bringing a full security team. Alexander agreed. He had learned one lesson from the past. Walking into danger alone was not bravery. Sometimes it was stupidity. Elena stayed beside him as the team entered the building. The warehouse was enormous. Dust covered the floor. Old machinery stood beneath white sheets. The air smelled of rust and smoke. Alexander stopped. Smoke. The memory returned. A hallway. A man's voice. "Alexander." He turned sharply. Elena grabbed his arm. "What happened?" "I know this place." Marcus looked around. "You've been here?" "Yes." "When?" Alexander's eyes moved across the warehouse. "Twenty-two years ago." A sound came from somewhere deeper inside. Metal striking concrete. Everyone froze. Marcus raised his weapon. Alexander stepped forward. A door opened at the far end. No one was there. Only a chair. On the chair was a black envelope. Alexander walked toward it. Marcus caught his arm. "Don't." Alexander looked at him. "Why?" "It could be a trap." "It probably is." He removed the envelope anyway. Inside was a photograph. Alexander looked at it. His face went pale. Elena moved closer. "What is it?" The photograph showed Alexander at seventeen. Standing beside Victor. But that wasn't the worst part. In the background stood Thomas Hart. His hands were tied. Elena covered her mouth. Alexander stared at the image. "I don't remember this." A voice came from the darkness. "You weren't supposed to." Everyone turned. Victor stepped into the light. He was older than Alexander remembered from the photograph. But his eyes were the same. Cold. Calculating. Almost amused. Marcus raised his weapon. Alexander lifted his hand. "Don't." Victor smiled. "Still protecting everyone around you." Alexander stared at him. "Where is my father?" Victor's smile disappeared. "Dead." "And Thomas?" Victor looked at Elena. "Alive." Her breath caught. "Where?" Victor ignored her. "You've become very much like Richard." Alexander stepped forward. "No." Victor raised an eyebrow. "No?" "My father controlled people because he was afraid." Alexander's voice was cold. "I don't need to control anyone." Victor laughed. "Your wife disagrees." Alexander's eyes hardened. "Leave her out of this." Victor looked at Elena. "She was always in this." Alexander moved forward. Victor raised a small remote control. "One step closer and the entire building burns." Marcus immediately looked around. Explosives. Alexander could smell the fuel. Victor smiled. "Your father built this place as a hiding ground. I turned it into something useful." Elena looked at Alexander. "What does he want?" Victor answered for him. "I want what your father stole from me." Alexander frowned. "The empire?" "No." Victor's eyes shifted to Elena. "The truth." Elena went still. Victor continued. "Richard believed he could erase me from history." "He couldn't." Alexander's expression remained hard. "So you killed him?" Victor shook his head. "I didn't kill Richard." He looked at Alexander. "Your father killed himself." Alexander stared. "What?" "Not literally." Victor stepped closer. "He spent twenty-two years destroying himself trying to protect you." Alexander's jaw tightened. "Explain." Victor's voice became quieter. "Richard discovered what I had been doing. Thomas discovered it too." Elena stepped forward. "What were you doing?" Victor looked at her. "Moving money." "From the Blackwoods?" "From everyone." He smiled. "Blackwood accounts. Hart accounts. Private trusts. Political accounts. Companies belonging to people who believed they were untouchable." Alexander looked at the photograph. "And Thomas found out." "Yes." "What happened to him?" Victor's expression changed. "I took him." Elena's eyes filled with tears. "You kidnapped my father." "I did." "Why didn't you kill him?" "Because Thomas was useful." Alexander's fists clenched. "Useful for what?" Victor looked at Elena's bracelet. Then at Alexander. "He knew about the trust." Alexander's expression hardened. "The Blackwood-Hart trust." Victor nodded. "But there was something Thomas knew that your father didn't." "What?" Victor smiled. "The trust wasn't created to protect money." Alexander felt a chill. "Then what was it created for?" Victor looked directly at Elena. "Protection." "For whom?" "For you." Elena's face changed. Victor continued. "Your father knew one day the people who had stolen everything would come for you. So he created a legal structure that could only be activated by a Blackwood heir and a Hart descendant." Alexander looked at Elena. "Our marriage." Victor nodded. "Exactly." Alexander's mind raced. "Then Richard really did plan it." "Richard created the trust." Victor's expression became bitter. "But Adrian corrupted the plan." Alexander's eyes narrowed. "How?" "Adrian decided the trust could give him access to everything. He manipulated circumstances. He monitored Elena. He forged documents. He pushed you toward her." Alexander remembered the photographs. "The marriage was planned." "Yes." "But my feelings weren't." Victor smiled. "That was Adrian's greatest mistake." Alexander stepped forward. "He underestimated me." "No." Victor looked at Elena. "He underestimated what she would become to you." For the first time, Victor's confidence disappeared. He looked almost disappointed. "You were supposed to use her." Alexander stared at him. "What?" "Your father believed you would eventually learn the truth and choose the family." Victor shook his head. "But you chose her." Alexander's voice was quiet. "I chose the truth." Victor laughed. "No." He pressed the remote. Somewhere behind them, a timer began counting down. **10:00** Elena looked at Alexander. "What is that?" Victor smiled. "The final lesson." Marcus shouted to his team. "Find the explosives!" Alexander didn't move. He stared at Victor. "What happens when the timer reaches zero?" Victor looked at him. "The warehouse explodes." Elena grabbed Alexander's hand. "Then we need to leave." Victor shook his head. "You can leave." Alexander narrowed his eyes. "But?" Victor pointed toward the far wall. A steel door opened. Inside was a small room. Someone sat in a chair. Alexander froze. Gray hair. Thin face. Older than the photograph. But unmistakable. Thomas Hart. Elena gasped. "Dad." Thomas lifted his head. His eyes met hers. "Elena." She ran toward him. Alexander followed. Victor didn't stop them. Marcus and the security team rushed to the explosives. Elena fell to her knees beside Thomas. Her father was weak. Bruised. But alive. She embraced him. "I found you." Thomas held her. "I knew you would." Alexander stood nearby. Thomas looked at him. "Alexander." "Mr. Hart." Thomas smiled faintly. "Don't call me that." Alexander nodded. "Thomas." Thomas looked toward Victor. "He told you the truth?" "Most of it." Thomas sighed. "Then there's very little time." Alexander looked at the timer. **07:14** "What aren't we being told?" Thomas looked at Elena. Then at Alexander. "The trust isn't the only thing your father left behind." Alexander frowned. "What else?" Thomas reached into his coat. He pulled out a small key. "This opens a second vault." "Where?" Thomas looked directly at Alexander. "Blackwood Tower." Alexander's eyes narrowed. "There's no vault there." "There is." Thomas gave him the key. "And inside is the reason Victor wanted me alive." Victor's voice came from behind them. "Don't tell him." Alexander turned. Victor was standing near the exit. Marcus shouted. "Stop!" Victor smiled. "You think you've won because you've found Thomas?" He looked at Alexander. "You haven't." Alexander stepped toward him. "Why?" Victor's expression became strangely calm. "Because I wasn't the one who started this." Alexander stopped. "What?" Victor looked at Elena. "Ask her mother." Elena froze. "My mother?" Victor nodded. "Margaret knows who truly ordered your father's disappearance." Alexander's eyes hardened. "You said you took Thomas." "I did." "But someone ordered you." Victor smiled. "Now you're finally asking the right question." The timer reached five minutes. Victor disappeared through the exit. Marcus shouted after him. "Alexander, we need to move!" Alexander looked at Thomas. Then Elena. Then the ticking timer. He grabbed Elena's hand. "Come on." They rushed toward the exit. Behind them, Marcus's team worked frantically to disable the explosives. Alexander pulled Elena through the warehouse doors just as the first explosion rocked the building. Fire erupted behind them. Thomas was carried outside. Elena stayed beside him. Alexander turned toward the burning warehouse. Victor was gone. Again. But this time, Alexander had something Victor hadn't expected. The key. He looked at it in his hand. A second vault. A secret hidden inside the company he had inherited. And a woman who had known the truth for twenty-two years. Margaret Hart. Alexander looked at Elena. "We're going to your mother." Elena nodded. But before they could move, Thomas grabbed Alexander's wrist. "There is one more thing." Alexander turned. Thomas's eyes were filled with regret. "Victor wasn't lying about everything." "About what?" Thomas looked at Elena. "Your mother didn't just protect you." He paused. "She made a deal." Alexander's face hardened. "What kind of deal?" Thomas lowered his voice. "She traded your father's life for yours." Elena went completely still. Alexander looked at her. And for the first time since the secrets had begun, neither of them knew whether Margaret had been a protector... or the person who had betrayed them all.
