Chapter 2 — The Devil’s Deal

~ Ivy ~ "You aren't in any position to make demands, Ronan," Ivy said, forcing her voice to remain steady. "I am the only person in this building who decides if you leave in handcuffs or in an elevator," Ronan replied. He tossed the encrypted drive onto the conference table. "My client has a lot of resources," Ivy said, taking a cautious step back until the pillar blocked his view of the nearest exit. "If I don't check in within twenty minutes, they'll know the extraction failed." "Your client won't help you," Ronan said, his eyes tracking her movements with cold precision. "The moment the security alarms went live on Level Forty, the contract was burned. You know how corporate espionage works, Ivy. You're an asset who got caught, and now you are completely on your own." Panic flared in her chest, but she pressed her lips together and refused to let it show. He was right. Corporate clients never came back for compromised operatives. If the authorities stepped through those doors, she was facing years in a federal penitentiary for cyber-intrusion and industrial theft. Her career, her freedom, and her life would be ruined before sunrise. "What do you want?" she asked. "You obviously didn't keep me here just to explain my own job to me." "I want a solution to a problem," Ronan said, walking slowly toward the center of the room. "And you happen to be standing right in front of it." "I'm an AV technician and a network specialist, not a problem solver for Hale Global," she replied. "You're a woman with no record, a spotless fake identity, and a desperate need to stay out of prison," Ronan said. He pulled a black leather folder from his jacket and placed it beside the drive. "Open it." Ivy hesitated, watching his face for any sign of a trap. When he didn't move, she stepped forward and opened the folder. Inside lay a single printed document with the header: Personal Asset and Engagement Agreement. "A fake engagement?" she asked, scanning the lines of the legal documents. "Are you serious?" "Dead serious," Ronan said, resting his hands in his pockets. "My grandmother, Lady Catherine, controls thirty-five percent of the voting shares in this company. She has made it abundantly clear that my permanent appointment as Chairman is contingent on me settling down with a suitable partner before the quarterly board review." "And you think picking a corporate spy off the floor of your boardroom qualifies as suitable?" Ivy asked, looking up at him. "She expects someone I cannot control," Ronan replied, his voice dropping slightly. "Someone sharp, independent, and unfazed by wealth. If I bring her a polished socialite from our inner circle, she will see through the arrangement in five seconds. But you? You stood in my building, tapped my private communications, and didn't even flinch when the security grid collapsed." "This is insane," she said, shaking her head. "Six months?" "Six months," Ronan confirmed. "You move into my residence, attend required corporate and family functions at my side, and play the devoted fiancée until the board review concludes. In exchange, the security footage from tonight vanishes, your drive is returned wiped, and I deposit five million dollars into an offshore account in your name." Five million dollars. It was enough to buy financial freedom, to drop every dangerous contract, and to disappear forever. More importantly, six months inside his inner circle meant direct access to Hale Global's high-level network credentials. If she played this right, she could secure enough leverage to ensure Ronan Hale could never threaten her again. "What's the catch?" she asked. "You follow my rules," Ronan said, his tone sharpening instantly. "You don't talk to the media. You don't make unauthorized contact with outside networks. You think you're renting my name to save yourself, Ivy, but the second you sign that paper, you are under my complete supervision." "I don't belong to anyone," she said, narrowing her eyes. "Then you can explain your specialized equipment to the federal marshals waiting downstairs," Ronan replied calmly. He reached into his coat, pulled out a sleek silver pen, and offered it to her. "Choose." Her fingers tightened around the edge of the folder. The room felt suddenly too quiet, the soft hum of the air system the only sound between them. She looked at the pen, then up at his unflinching gray eyes. He wasn't giving her a choice, and they both knew it. "If I sign this," she said, "I need an advance. Half the funds placed in escrow immediately." "Twenty percent tonight," Ronan counter-offered without missing a beat. "The rest upon completion." "Thirty percent," she demanded. "And I keep my private tablet." Ronan studied her for a long moment, a faint, almost imperceptible tilt appearing at the corner of his mouth. "Done. Sign on page four." She took the pen from his hand, their fingers brushing briefly. She flipped to the final page, pressed the tip to the line, and wrote Ivy Lang in clear, sharp cursive. "Welcome to Hale Global," Ronan said, taking the folder back and closing it with a finality that made her pulse jump. "Don't congratulate me yet," she replied, smoothing down her technician jacket. "We haven't even survived your grandmother." "Lady Catherine is the easy part," Ronan said, walking toward the private elevator at the rear of the boardroom. He pressed the call button, the doors sliding open smoothly to reveal a mirrored interior. "The difficult part will be convincing my security detail that my new fiancée was discovered in a service alcove carrying a signal scrambler." "I can be very persuasive when my freedom is on the line," she said, stepping into the elevator beside him. "You'll need to be," Ronan said as the doors slid shut, sealing them together inside the small space. The elevator began its rapid descent toward the underground parking garage. "Starting tomorrow morning, every camera in the city will be on you. If you make one mistake, the press will tear you apart." "I don't make mistakes," she said. "I got caught tonight because your security system rewrote its own protocols in real time." "I wrote those protocols," Ronan said softly, turning his head to look down at her in the mirrored reflection. Ivy froze, looking at his reflection as the elevator slowed to a stop. "You wrote the override?" "I built the entire security architecture for this tower five years ago," Ronan replied, his voice calm and unbothered. "I knew you were in the vent twenty minutes before you clipped the wire, Ivy." The elevator doors chimed and slid open, revealing a private black sedan flanked by four armed guards standing in the underground garage. Her throat went dry as the truth landed. He hadn't just trapped her tonight. He had selected her before she even stepped foot into the building. "After you, partner," Ronan said, extending a hand toward the open door of the sedan. She looked at his waiting hand, her heart hammering against her ribs, and realized she hadn't just signed a fake engagement contract—she had walked straight into a cage built by Ronan Hale. "You planned this whole thing," she whispered, stepping out onto the floor. Ronan leaned down, his voice brushing right past her ear as he leaned in. "I always protect my investments."
