Xuham China . November 19 2019. Doctor Xian Ming looked at Sue Ping with a sigh of relief on his face, and exclaimed “waoh! We ‘ve made it” “Do you think it would work”? Sue asked. “Of course it will, all we have to do now is inject these Rats and Bats, and see what happens in the next fourteen days when the symptoms starts to manifest”. He replied, holding up a syringe filled to the brim with a dark brownish fluid. Ming wore a long overflowing lab coat over his blue shirt and black trousers that looked like a tuplic worn by fanatical Muslims who didn't want dropping from their urine staining their trousers while they peed. He wore medicated eye glasses with thick lenses that resembled the base of a Coca Cola bottle. He was a short thickset man in his early forties, but looked like a man in his fifties. Ming was a cross breed of Chinese and Korea. He had obtained a first class degree in micro biology from the university of Guangzhou and proceeded to the United States where he did his Masters and PhD in Virology at the Boston University in Massachusetts. He was the best graduating student in both classes, a feat that had brought him closer to his lecturer, a Professor of Virology, Doctor Bruce Stephen. Bruce had taught him all he knew and more, any difficulty he had was channelled to Bruce who always offered his help. But on this latest creation, Bruce had being sceptical to help. They had a long argument on the dangers such a creation would have if not handled properly. Ming had reassured him that it was to be used to eradicated a Rodent invasion that was increasing the spread of Lassa fever in the poor rural areas of China. “There is a tendency that the Rodents could transfer it to human and it will be contagious as it spreads from human to human” Mr. Bruce had said. “I can develop a scavenger that could prevent it from such an occurrence” Ming had replied, knowing deep within him he had no such capability. He had to lie to his teacher and his best friend, so he could please the Communist Party which he was heavily indebted to for all his years of education. They had funded him through early education to where he was right now. He was more or less like a slave to them, and that is why he couldn't say no to them even when he knew that what they wanted him to do was deadly and dangerous. Refusing would have meant losing his life, now despite the hard work he had put in to it he knew he was still not safe. He planned to disappear to maybe a place like Siberia, change his identity and start a new life, he knew how such government operated, once they get their hands on his creation they would eliminate him erasing any records that could traced back to them. “I promise i ll take utmost care to make sure that nothing goes wrong” Ming had told Bruce. “Okey you were my best student and I think I can trust you with such responsibility, I ‘ll email the documents to you first thing in the morning”. Bruce had replied. And that was how he had now finally arrived at this liquid he was holding in the syringe in his hands. “What's with the Champagne”? Ping asked. “Oh! Yes that's to celebrate our success here tonight, here grab a glass and let's toast to our creation, to the new Virus in town”. Ming said holding up the bottle as he filled the empty glass Ping had thrust in front of him. “But are you sure, all the ones we ‘ve tried ended up in failure”. Ping asked, watching the sparkling liquid fill the glass, a positive look on her face. “Mr. Bruce is the best and from what he sent I saw were we went wrong, what we have now is the real thing our benefactors want, so enjoy this toast to success and freedom “. Ming replied. Ping drank the content of the glass after clicking her glass with Ming, she exhaled with a sigh of assurance. She couldn't wait for this to be all over so that that she could take her dream trip to London where her sister has be waiting years on end to see her, from there she and her sister would proceed to the US to regain custody or her son Jingjin. The US court had finally granted her child right over her estranged husband who had been alleged to have being careless with a cigarette that burnt down his house which almost took the life of her son. Ping was Korean. Her great grandfather and her grandfather were members of the communist Party and the top enforcers of the Party after they had taken up citizenship. Her father had carried on the legacy, and it was him who had secured a Communist scholarship that had enabled her obtain her degree and PhD in Virology from the Munich university in Germany. He had also been the one who had recommended her to serve as Ming's assistant at the biological warfare laboratory in Xuham. Ping was a beauty to behold, fair, tall, elegant, with a smile that made her everybody’s dream girl. That had attracted her husband Jinghua to her. They met in Germany where she was studying for her Masters at the age of twenty-five. A year later she was pregnant with their son Jinjing. They were married in a small ceremony on campus, but the marriage hit the rock almost as fast as it had started. Jinghua's craving for women was insatiable and inevitably led to them parting ways. Jinghua had fled with the baby to the US, and when she couldn't find them, she was down and heart broken, and had to tell her dad who used his communists connections to located and stage the arson attack that had now won her custody. This was one of the reasons she loved her father so much, he was always there when she needed him most. It was also the reason why she had obeyed his instructions to be loyal to her benefactors and do whatever they wanted and keep their secrets intact. She took the last gulp of her drink, raised the empty cup at Ming and said, “to success and freedom” a tingling inside her wailing up a joy she had not known for years. “To success and freedom” Ming replied as he started to inject the Lab Rats one after another.
