The sun was already up when I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing for a call. I goggily picked it up, squinting at the bright screen. It was Elijah calling me.
Even though I was still sleepy, I couldn't do anything but sigh and answer his call.
Yesterday, we had a fight regarding his decision for me to stop working just because my artificial insemination is over. After our fight, I didn't call him or even talk to him. I had the right to decline him because, by the way, who is he? Not because he's a billionaire, and he paid for my womb to carry his child, it doesn't mean that he now has the right to oblige me to quit my job.
That job is the only thing that keeps me and my grandmother alive!
"What do you want?" I asked, a bit irritated because he disturbed my sleep. "If you insist on what you want again—"
"I'm sorry," he said, which made me stiffen a bit. Did I hear it right? Did he apologize? "Can we talk about what happened yesterday, Enah?" he added. His voice was soft and almost pleading, making my heart flustered a bit.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked, still annoyed by our fight yesterday. "If you're still going to force me to quit my job, you're just wasting your time."
"I'm sorry," he replied, which made me roll my eyes. "I want to apologize for the way I acted yesterday, Enah. I know your job is your priority—"
"So you know."
"That's why I want us to meet," he said, which made me roll my eyes again. "I didn't even consider your feelings, Enah. I want us to meet, so we can understand each other. I was in a bad mood yesterday, and I didn't mean to turn my annoyance on you. I want to personally meet you to apologize, and I also want to clarify some things with you regarding our contract," he added.
To be honest, I didn't want to see him. I wanted to hide from him, but we still needed each other. I didn't want to drag out our fight any longer, so even before I changed my mind, I decided to change my clothes to meet him at the café we both agreed on.
I'm doing this for the sake of my grandmother, while he's doing it for his own child. He himself said yesterday that he's doing it for the sake of his child, not mine. That reason is probably enough for me to be mad at him, right?
He's so insensitive. Maybe that's also the reason why girls are so elusive to him. He doesn't know how to tame a woman. He doesn't know how to love a woman. He knows nothing else but to control other people's lives just because he has money.
Well, I'm exceptional. I will never crawl back to him, even if he pays me. I will never worship him, even though he pays me. If this agreement fails, I will return everything he spent on my grandmother's medical expenses.
After an hour, I arrived at the coffee shop and found him waiting at a table. He stood up when he saw me, so I couldn't help but sighed to control my annoyance. Until now, I'm still mad about what we talked about yesterday, and if I don't control my annoyance, this meet-up might end in nothing.
I took the seat across from him. Elijah just followed me with his eyes before I heard him sigh and sit back in his chair. The waiter approached our seats. I watched him order coffee for both of us. We sat in uncomfortable silence for a few minutes before he spoke.
"I'm glad you let us meet, Enah," he said.
I crossed my arms and looked at him with irritation. "What about the agreement, Elijah? Did you change anything?" I asked, a bit impatient because of it.
"I didn't change anything, Enah. What you signed in the contract, nothing will change. Nothing has changed," he said before he chuckled without humor, which made my brows narrow a bit. "I just met with you to ask for a favor because I just don't understand why you won't quit that job," he added. Oh, here we go again. "Is money really that important to you?"
"It's not just money, Elijah," I said, looking at him with my piercing eyes. "The salary from that job, I can use that for my grandmother's medical expenses—"
"I told you I would cover your grandmother's medical expenses, Enah—"
"I'm supporting my cousin's schooling in the province, Elijah—"
"I will provide for your cousin's tuition," he cut me off, making my eyes widen a bit because of his offers. "It is stated in the contract you signed yesterday that I will be responsible for all of your expenses, including or not in the contract we both signed," he said. "You have nothing else to do but take care of my child's safety. That's all I want to ask of you, Enah. I can't risk my child. You can't risk the health of my child with your work, Enah. My child's life and your safety depend on it," he added.
Because of what he said, I couldn't do anything but bite my tongue. I want to speak, but it seems like because of what he said, I lost the ability to speak.
His child's life and my safety depend on it? It seems like yesterday he didn't care about me, but now... why does it seem like the world has turned upside down?
I don't know how that line changed my mind so quickly. I said to myself, No matter what he does, I will never allow him to quit my job, but because of that simple line and assurance, he quickly changed my mind. I don't even know how I let myself live in a house with him.
"Elijah, I don't think we need to do this," I said when I entered the living room of his mansion. I hovered my eyes throughout the living room before I turned to look at him, who was now pulling my baggage. "It's fine in my apartment, and I already promised you that I wouldn't work any more just to make you complacent."
"This is not about your work, Enah," he said before turning to look at me and smiling a bit. "I know you won't abandon my child. I just want to see you every day," he broke off before he coughed a little. "I mean, I want to see you get pregnant. I want to be there when you carry my child. I want my child to grow healthily in your womb, Enah."
"Are you saying that you are afraid that I might consume alcohol and smoke cigarettes while pregnant with your child, Elijah?" I asked, narrowing my brows because of what he might be thinking. "I don't do alcohol, Elijah. Do I look like I'm smoking—"
"That is not what I meant, Enah," he said before he chuckled and went upstairs first.
I couldn't do anything but roll my eyes as I followed him up the stairs with my baggage. Elijah's face looks Stoic, but I can't deny that despite his stoic and emotionless face, there is still a caring Elijah hiding there.
"Be careful, Enah," he said before he guided me into his car.
Ever since we moved into the same house, he has been caring for me. The way he guides me in all my moves, it seems like he is afraid that I will have an accident. I don't know how a billionaire can be caring like this. I thought he'd be a powerless alpha, but seeing him like this, I just proved to myself that he's not just an alpha.
He's the most powerful person in their clan.
I watched him turn around in the driver's seat, and together we took the road to the clinic. While we were on our way, I couldn't help but feel a bit excited and hopeful. I couldn't believe it was finally happening. It's been a month since I underwent artificial insemination, and today was the day we would find out if it worked or not.
As we walked into the clinic, my heart was beating out of my chest. I could feel the nerves creeping up on me. The girl at the reception desk greeted us with a warm smile and asked for our names.
"Elijah Cameron and Enah Fernando," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Ah yes, you're here for your pregnancy test. Please have a seat, and the doctor will be with you shortly," the girl said as she handed us two forms to fill out.
I sat down next to Elijah, and we both filled out the forms in silence. I couldn't help but turn to look at Elijah, who was now seriously filling out the form. I bit my lip, and instead of paying attention to Elijah, I decided to turn to look at my form and bother myself to fill it out. It felt like hours had passed before the doctor finally called us in. Taking a deep breath, I stood up and followed him to the examination room.
"So, how have you been feeling since the procedure?" the doctor asked as he looked through my medical records.
"I've been feeling a bit nauseous and tired," I replied, feeling my heart race.
"Well, let's see if those are good signs," he said with a reassuring smile as he performed the pregnancy test.
Even before the doctor performed the pregnancy test, Elijah decided to take the call when someone called him, so when he went outside, I was the only one left in the clinic to wait for the doctor. It didn't take that long when the doctor walked in with a small smile creeping onto his lips.
"Where's Elijah?" the doctor asked when he saw that Elijah was not in his seat.
"He left to take the call outside," I said before I smiled at Doctor Benitez. "How's the result? Is it positive... or negative?" I asked.
The doctor sighed heavily before he shook his head, which made my lips form into a thin line. "I'm sorry to inform you, Enah, but the test results show that you are not pregnant," he said.
I couldn't help but chuckle a bit to ease the shock and disappointment I feel now.
"What do you mean, Doc? I... I-I thought this was going to work?" I asked. "How is that possible, Doc?"
It's not that I'm afraid of not having a child. I'm afraid of Elijah. What if he finds out I'm not pregnant? What about my grandma?
"Based on your medical examination before you undergo artificial insemination, it appears that you have a medical condition that makes it difficult for you to conceive a child. I'm afraid artificial insemination was not successful, Enah," he said.
I couldn't do anything but wipe the tears that welled up in my eyes. "How could it be..."
"I understand this must be hard for you, but it's important to be aware of your medical situation, Enah," he said before he shifted to his seat. "I can recommend some alternative options for you and Elijah, Enah. Elijah will understand it. There are other ways to become a parent, such as adoption or using a surrogate. I can provide you with more information and resources if you two are interested " he added.
I don't think that's good news to hear. If Elijah found out that I couldn't bear a child, he would do everything just to make me pay back everything he spent on my grandmother. I don't want him to feel disappointed. I don't want him to feel that I betrayed him.
I don't want him to know that I have a medical condition. I don't want to betray him.
How could I tell him the truth? How could I tell him that I would never be able to carry a child due to my medical condition? I didn't want to disappoint him. I didn't want to risk my grandmother just so I could tell him the truth. I don't want to break Elijah's heart. I knew he would do everything he could to make my life suffer when he found out that I lied to him. I don't want to risk my grandmother's life either. What about us if Elijah cuts his support for my grandmother's medical expenses?
"How's the result?" Elijah asked when he saw me. It looks like he already cut the call when he saw me. "Did it work? Are you pregnant?" he asked, walking closer to me.
With a heavy heart, I lied. "Yes, it's positive. I-I am pregnant," I replied, feigning excitement.
Elija's face lit up with joy. "That's amazing!"
I forced a smile and nodded, feeling guilty for deceiving him. It didn't take that long when we decided to go home that day. The joy on Elijah's face was obvious. He is constant in opening a conversation about the future of his child, where it will study, and who will be his child's godparents; he even wants me to co-parent with him, forcing me to visit his child even after our agreement ends, if ever.
As the conversation continued, I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness at every mention of my supposed pregnancy. I knew the truth would eventually come out, but I couldn't bear to ruin this moment for Elijah.
As the weeks and months came by, Elijah and I continued with our arrangement. It's also often that something happens between the two of us every night that I want, because somehow, I also hope that something will still develop between us that way, which is so impossible for me.
Come on, Enah! The doctor himself said that you have a medical condition and you will never have a child! Why is it so hard for you to understand that thing?
I was busy preparing Elijah's breakfast when I heard him coming down from upstairs. I greeted him with a smile, but my smile faded away when I saw him holding the result of my medical report last time with Doctor Benitez.
"E-Elijah, how did you—"
"You're not pregnant, aren't you?" he said before he grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of the mansion.
"Elijah, you're hurting me—"
Even before I could complain about the tightness of his grip on my arm, he immediately released it, leading me to sit on the grass. All the maids were surprised to see what he did to push me, but none of them decided to interfere. I know that they want to intervene, but they are just afraid because of Elijah's actions right now and the anger that can be seen on his face from the way he looked at me.
"E-Elijah—"
I couldn't believe what was happening. The boy I loved, the one I thought loved me back, was standing in front of me, his eyes filled with anger and disappointment.
"All this time, you lied to me, Enah," he said, his voice dripping with accusation.
I couldn't do anything but wipe the tears that slowly dripped down my cheeks. I was expecting this thing to happen, but not yet. Not now.
"Elijah, listen to me—"
"Enah, you lied to me! How could I listen to you, huh?" he yelled, which made me jump while kneeling in front of him. "You told me you were pregnant, Enah! I can't believe I believed a liar like you!" he spat out, his words like knives piercing through my heart.
Tears started streaming down my face. "No, it's not like that," I cried. "Yes, I lied to you before, b-but, b-but the doctor said I a-am... I went to the doctor yesterday, and the doctor confirmed that —"
"Shut the f**k up, Enah!" he yelled, which made me cry even more. "Do you think I will believe you now? Stop lying, Enah. I did some digging, and you know what I found out? You're not pregnant, and you will never be pregnant because you have a medical condition. You can't be pregnant. You can't conceive a child—my child, Enah!" he said, his voice getting louder as I sobbed in front of him. "How could you betray me like this, Enah? I trusted you! Do you even know that?"
I was scared and didn't know what to say. The truth was that, yes, I betrayed him by believing that I was pregnant. I have been having morning sickness since last week, and just yesterday I checked up with Doctor Benitez. I thought I was just having the flu, but even he was shocked when he found out in my blood test that I was pregnant.
I was foolish and blinded by my own desires. If I had just told him in the beginning that artificial insemination didn't work for me, would everything still end up like this?
"I-I'm sorry," I sobbed. "I didn't mean to deceive you, Elijah. I was just afraid that you might get angry when you find out I have a medical condition. That you might get angry and cut off support for my grandmother's medical expenses—"
"You really used your grandmother, huh?" he said sarcastically, which made me cry. "You got what you wanted, Enah. You just did it for your grandma, right?" he mocked, making me shake my head. "You got what you wanted, Enah. You got your golden ticket to a life of luxury."
"I never wanted your money," I cried.
Elijah shook his head crazily. "I can't believe I ever loved someone like you. You're nothing but a liar and a gold digger," he added before he turned his back on me.
I couldn't take his harsh words anymore. I ran out of the garden, tears blurring my vision. I felt like my heart was breaking into a million pieces. How could he think so little of me? How could he judge me like that?
But deep down, I knew he was right. I had betrayed his trust and used his feelings for me to my advantage. I was a horrible person, and I had lost the one I loved because of it.
Elijah wanted me out of his mansion, so I did that. He even ordered his guards to drag me out of the mansion with my suitcases. Even though it was raining, and my vision was getting blurry because of tears, I was able to look up at the veranda of our room above.
Elijah and my eyes met each other again for the last time. I saw him looking in my direction, watching me get wet in the rain. When he was satisfied, he himself left the veranda and closed the door, which made me sob again in so much pain.
I embraced myself, and before I got completely sick, I stood up with my suitcases and walked away.
Elijah doesn't have an idea that I'm already carrying his child. I am pregnant, and he is the father. He doesn't know that I'm pregnant because he prioritizes his anger.
I guess I have to learn to raise our child alone without Elijah's support.
