Chapter 17: The One Who Watches and Chapter 18: The First Crack

263 Words
High above the tree line— Hidden in shadow— A figure stood. Unmoving. Silent. Observing. Their eyes remained locked on Lyra. Not Kael. Not the kingdom. Her. The fire. The power. The connection. A slow smile curved beneath the hood. “Interesting…” They shifted slightly, just enough to remain hidden—but closer now. Closer to the moment. Closer to the weakness. Because power alone wasn’t what made Lyra valuable. It was what she cared about. And now— That was clear. “You should leave.” Kael’s voice came suddenly. Firm. Controlled. Final. Lyra turned sharply. “No.” “This is no longer just about you.” “It never was,” she shot back. Kael stepped closer, his gaze intense now. “This is my kingdom.” “And I didn’t ask to be brought into it.” That hit. And they both felt it. The shift. The tension. Different from before. Not desire. Not pull. Conflict. “You are a target,” Kael said. “So are you.” “I can handle that.” Lyra’s eyes flashed. “So can I.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “This is not something you understand yet.” Her fire flared brighter. “And you do?” Silence. Sharp. Heavy. Then— Softer. More dangerous. “You don’t get to decide what I can face,” she said. Kael’s voice dropped. “And you don’t get to pretend this doesn’t change things.” That word again. Change. Everything between them— Was changing. And not all of it was easy.
