Chapter 7: The First Shift and Chapter 8: Something Begins

340 Words
The distance between them had disappeared. Not physically. But something deeper. Something harder to define. Lyra stepped back first. Not because she wanted to. Because she needed to think. Needed space. Needed— Something. “This is a mistake,” she said. Kael didn’t move. “Then leave.” The words were simple. But they landed heavier than expected. Lyra’s eyes narrowed. “You’re not going to stop me?” “No.” A pause. “But you haven’t gone yet.” That— Was the problem. Because she hadn’t. And she didn’t know why. Her fire flickered softly along her fingertips again. Not aggressive. Not defensive. Restless. Mirroring her thoughts. “I should go,” she said again. But this time— It sounded less convincing. Kael watched her. Quiet. Patient. Waiting. Not forcing. Not pulling. Just… there. And somehow— That made it harder to leave. Lyra moved toward the edge of the tower. The drop below stretched endlessly into darkness. Freedom. Escape. Distance. She could leave. Right now. No hesitation. No consequence. And yet— She hesitated. Her wings flickered into existence briefly— Then disappeared again. She exhaled slowly. “You don’t belong here,” she said, not turning back. Kael’s voice came from behind her. “Neither do you.” A beat. Then— “Maybe that’s why you’re still here.” Lyra closed her eyes briefly. Because that— That felt too close to the truth. She turned back slowly. And for the first time— She allowed herself to really look at him. Not as a stranger. Not as a threat. But as something else entirely. “You’re not afraid of me,” she said. Kael shook his head once. “No.” Her voice softened. “You should be.” He stepped closer again. Close enough now that she could feel the difference in them. Heat. And cold. Fire. And stone. “I’m not,” he said. And this time— She believed him. And that— Was the beginning of everything.
