Chapter 2: Fire in Her Veins

289 Words
For a moment— There was nothing. Just air rushing past her. The ground far below. And the overwhelming realization that she had never gone this far before. Her heart raced. Her fire responded instantly. Flames erupted around her body, stabilizing her fall, slowing it—but not stopping it. Not yet. “Focus,” she whispered to herself. Her wings flared wider, catching the air. Holding. Struggling. But holding. Lyra gasped as the descent steadied. Then—she laughed. The sound was wild. Free. Uncontrolled. She soared higher, pushing herself upward with bursts of flame, testing the limits of what she could do without her mother guiding her. Faster. Higher. Stronger. Her power surged in response. The fire within her grew hotter. Brighter. More intense. And with it— Came something dangerous. Emotion. Excitement. Adrenaline. All feeding the flames. All pushing her further than she had ever gone. “I can do this,” she breathed. She believed it. She felt it. Until— Her control slipped. Just slightly. The flames flickered. Her wings faltered. And suddenly— The balance shifted. Lyra dropped. Harder this time. Faster. Her breath caught. “Wait—” She tried to reign it back in—but the more she panicked, the worse it became. Her fire surged wildly now. Unstable. Unpredictable. The sky spun around her. The ground rushed up— Too fast. Too close. And then— Impact. The force slammed through her body, knocking the air from her lungs as flames exploded outward in a burst of heat and light. Everything went silent. Dark. Still. But just before the darkness took her— She felt it. A presence. Not like her mother’s. Not warm. Not ancient. Cold. Still. Watching.
