the devil's grip

Chapter Four And here I was, standing in front of one of the country’s most intimidating men, pretending to be a stranger. My heart thudded in my chest as Jonathan practically dragged me toward James, who was in the middle of toasting to other business partners. I forced a smile and extended my hand, though every nerve in my body screamed at me to run. Ah! The look on his face froze me in place. That arrogant smirk, the one I had feared ever since I met him, sent chills crawling up my spine. “Sister-in-law, long time no see… oh, sorry, I forgot—we met yesterday and today,” James said, his tone dripping with mockery. Jonathan’s eyebrows shot up in confusion. Given how busy James’s schedule was, there was no way we could have met. “You met already? How?” he asked, incredulous. “Well… Mr. James came to me to build a small house for him downtown. I was even shocked when he acquired our company today,” I mumbled, wishing I could vanish into thin air. What tricks was he plotting now? “Oh, is that so? Then I must say, James, you are really rich—I envy you. But still, don’t make my wife work too much,” Jonathan said, his voice casual, trying to lighten the tension. James’s eyes narrowed, and his words cut sharper than a blade. “She’s not even your wife, and yet you call her that. Don’t you think it’s a little… shameless?” His footsteps were slow and unhurried as he walked away, leaving a trace of cold arrogance behind him. My hands clenched into fists at my sides. Before I could process his words, Jonathan’s voice rang out, sharp and full of frustration. “You wouldn’t understand what it feels like to be in love, since you’ve never had a girlfriend. I don’t even know if you’ve ever been with a woman, virgin bastard!” James paused, turned back with that maddening smirk, and replied lightly, “Ask Anna about that.” My stomach dropped. Oh my god… what is he trying to say? I could feel the walls of the crowd closing in around me. Panic surged, and before Jonathan could turn, I slipped through the throng of people, desperate to find the female restroom. But my escape didn’t go as planned. A firm hand grabbed me from behind and yanked me into another room. My heart leaped into my throat. Darn it… it was James.
