Chapter 8 — The Line By Tuesday, school had settled into its usual rhythm. Lessons. Laughter. Teachers shouting over noisy classrooms. Students rushing between buildings before the next bell. For Anna, however, something felt different. She couldn't explain it. Maybe it was because Euclid had started sitting beside her during lunch. Maybe it was because, every time Euclid smiled at her, Anna forgot whatever she had been worrying about. Or maybe it was because the questions inside her had stopped feeling like questions she could simply ignore. At lunch, Anna and Euclid sat beneath a large tree behind the library. Euclid opened her lunch and looked at Anna. “You're staring.” Anna immediately looked away. “I wasn't.” “You were.” “I was thinking.” “About?” Anna smiled. “Nothing.” Euclid laughed. “You're terrible at lying.” Anna laughed too. For a while, they talked about school, teachers, music, and the things they wanted to do after graduation. It was ordinary. And Anna loved that. There was no pressure. No pretending. Just Euclid sitting beside her. Then Euclid became quiet. “Anna?” “Yeah?” “Can I ask you something?” Anna nodded. “Why do you always look like you're fighting with yourself?” The question caught Anna completely off guard. She looked down at her hands. “I don't know.” Euclid didn't push her. Instead, she gently said, “You don't have to tell me.” Anna looked at her. “Thank you.” Euclid smiled. And somehow, that meant more to Anna than a hundred questions could have. --- Across the school grounds, Lucio was having a very different afternoon. He was leaving the gym when Daniel caught up with him. “You're coming to the match Friday, right?” Lucio glanced at him. “Why?” “Because I said so.” Lucio laughed. “That isn't a reason.” Daniel shook his head. “You really argue about everything.” “Only when you're wrong.” Daniel grinned. “Then you'll be arguing with me for a long time.” They continued walking. For once, Daniel wasn't surrounded by his usual group. There was no audience. No performance. Just the two of them. Lucio noticed. “You're different when nobody's watching.” Daniel's smile disappeared. “What does that mean?” “You tell me.” Daniel looked ahead. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he quietly replied, “People expect things from me.” Lucio looked at him. “Like what?” “To win.” “And if you don't?” Daniel shrugged. “Then I'm not worth much to them.” Lucio didn't know what to say. It was the first time Daniel had said something that sounded honest. Not arrogant. Not threatening. Just honest. “You know,” Lucio said, “you don't have to prove yourself every second.” Daniel gave him a strange look. “You sound like my therapist.” “I don't get paid enough for that.” Daniel laughed. The tension between them disappeared for a moment. They kept walking. Then Daniel stopped. “Come with me.” “Where?” “You'll see.” Lucio hesitated. But eventually followed. --- Daniel led him toward the old equipment building behind the sports field. The place was usually empty. Lucio looked around. “What are we doing here?” Daniel opened the door. Inside were old sports trophies, broken equipment, and boxes that hadn't been touched in years. Daniel walked toward a shelf. He pulled out a small metal box. Lucio frowned. “What is that?” Daniel opened it. Inside was a collection of old photographs. Football teams. Medals. Students from previous years. Daniel picked up one photograph. A younger version of himself stood in the middle of a football team. Lucio smiled. “You actually looked innocent.” Daniel laughed. “I was.” “What happened?” Daniel looked at the photograph. “Life.” Lucio didn't laugh this time. Daniel placed the photograph back. Then he looked at Lucio. “You know what I like about you?” Lucio raised an eyebrow. “What?” “You don't look at me like everyone else does.” “How do they look at you?” “Like they already know who I am.” Lucio was quiet. “And you?” Daniel asked. “What do you think?” Lucio thought about it. “I think you're still deciding.” Daniel stared at him. For the first time, Lucio saw something uncertain in his eyes. Then— BANG! The door slammed open. Both boys turned. Three students stood outside. One of them was holding a phone. “Daniel.” Daniel's expression changed immediately. “What?” The student held up the phone. “You've got a problem.” Daniel walked toward him. “What happened?” The student showed him the screen. Lucio couldn't see everything, but he could see enough. A video. Daniel's face. An argument from several days earlier. And the video had already been shared around school. Daniel's jaw tightened. “Who posted this?” The student shrugged. “Everyone's talking about it.” Daniel grabbed the phone. Lucio stepped closer. “Daniel—” “Stay out of this.” The words came sharply. Lucio stopped. Daniel stared at the screen. Then his phone began vibrating. Once. Twice. Again. Messages were pouring in. Something had changed. The easy confidence Daniel had carried all day was gone. The student at the door spoke again. “The principal wants you in his office.” Daniel looked up. “When?” “Now.” Silence. Daniel handed the phone back. Then he looked at Lucio. For a moment, neither spoke. “Go,” Lucio said. Daniel shook his head. “You don't understand.” “Then explain.” Daniel stepped closer. “This isn't just about the video.” Lucio frowned. “What do you mean?” Daniel looked toward the door. “They're going to blame someone else for what happened.” “Who?” Daniel's eyes met his. “You.” Lucio's face went still. Before he could respond, Daniel's phone vibrated again. This time, Daniel looked at the message. His expression changed completely. He turned the screen toward Lucio. A message from an unknown number appeared. I know what you did. And I know who was with you. Lucio stared at the words. Daniel slowly locked his phone. Neither of them spoke. Then the bell rang across the school. But neither boy moved. Because whatever had started with a simple friendship was no longer simple. And somewhere outside that old building, someone already knew their secret.
