CHAPTER 4

Chapter 4 — Between Love and Prayer The days began to change quietly. Anna noticed it first in the little things. She smiled more often. She found herself checking her phone before going to sleep, hoping to see a message from Maya. Maya had become a constant presence in her thoughts. Their conversations had started innocently, with jokes and schoolwork, but somehow they had grown into something neither of them wanted to name. One afternoon, Maya sent her a message. Maya: I wish we could just disappear somewhere and forget what everyone expects from us. Anna stared at the screen. Her heart felt warm, but a familiar ache followed. She wanted to tell Maya that she felt the same. Instead, she typed: Anna: Maybe one day. She put her phone down and reached for her Bible. She had promised herself that she would keep praying. Every night, she asked God for guidance. Not for Maya to disappear. Not for her feelings to disappear. Just for God to show her what she was supposed to do. Across town, Lucio was having a very different kind of evening. Daniel sat beside him, talking about their future as though it had already been decided. "You trust me, don't you?" Daniel asked. Lucio nodded slowly. "I do." "Then stop worrying about what everyone else thinks." Lucio looked at him. Daniel's words sounded comforting, but something about them made Lucio uneasy. He wanted to believe Daniel was the person who understood him best. But lately, Daniel had started asking questions that made Lucio uncomfortable. Where he was. Who he was with. Why he didn't answer immediately. And whenever Lucio tried to explain, Daniel became distant. Still, Lucio stayed. He told himself that every relationship had difficult moments. He told himself Daniel cared. He told himself everything would eventually become easier. Meanwhile, Anna sat alone in her bedroom. Her hands were folded together. "God," she whispered, "I don't know what I'm supposed to do." Her voice trembled. "I care about her. More than I thought I ever could." She paused. "But I don't want to lose You." Tears gathered in her eyes. She wasn't asking for an easy answer anymore. She was asking for courage. The next morning, Anna and Lucio sat beside each other at breakfast. Neither spoke about their secrets. Neither knew the full truth about the other. But both could see that something had changed. Anna noticed the tiredness in Lucio's eyes. Lucio noticed the Bible beside Anna's plate. Their eyes met. "You okay?" Anna asked. Lucio gave a small smile. "Are you?" Anna smiled back. "Not really." For a moment, they laughed. It was a small moment, but it mattered. They were both carrying secrets. Both afraid of disappointing the people they loved. And both searching for answers. Neither of them knew that their separate choices were slowly leading them toward the same difficult question: Can you love someone deeply without losing yourself in the process?
