Chapter 9 — The Discovery Morning arrived beneath a pale grey sky. The school grounds were still damp from the rain that had fallen during the night. Small puddles reflected the buildings and the tall trees surrounding the compound, while drops of water clung to the leaves like tiny pieces of glass. A cool breeze moved through the corridors, carrying the smell of wet soil and freshly cut grass. Students arrived in groups, their shoes tapping against the concrete paths. Some were laughing loudly. Others were half-awake, dragging their bags behind them as they complained about the early hour. Lucio walked through the main gate quietly. He wore the school's dark trousers, a neatly pressed white shirt, and a navy sweater over it. His school shoes were still slightly wet from the walk across the grounds. His bag hung from one shoulder, and a few strands of his hair had fallen across his forehead. Normally, Lucio would have stopped to talk to someone. Today, he didn't. His mind was somewhere else. Daniel. The thought of him had followed Lucio from the moment he woke up. Daniel was different from everyone else at school. He walked through the corridors as though the rules belonged to everyone except him. He was confident, athletic, and rarely seemed bothered by what people thought. That confidence was part of what made him dangerous. Lucio knew it. He had known it from the beginning. And yet, somehow, he couldn't stay away. Across the courtyard, Daniel stood with a group of boys from the sports team. He was wearing his school uniform differently from everyone else. His shirt sleeves were rolled slightly up his arms, and his school sweater was tied loosely around his waist. His sports bag rested against one leg. He laughed at something one of the boys said. Then his eyes found Lucio. The laughter stopped. It lasted only a second. But Lucio noticed. Daniel looked away first. Lucio continued toward his classroom, pretending nothing had happened. But his heart was beating faster. --- The day passed slowly. By lunchtime, the clouds had begun to break apart, allowing thin rays of sunlight to fall across the school grounds. The wet pavement glittered beneath the light. Lucio sat beneath a large tree with his lunch untouched beside him. He was staring at a book without reading a single word. A shadow fell across the page. Lucio looked up. Daniel stood there. "Come with me." Lucio frowned. "Where?" Daniel glanced around. "Somewhere we can talk." Lucio hesitated. Every sensible part of him told him to stay where he was. Instead, he stood. They walked toward the older section of the school, where classrooms that were no longer used stood behind a row of trees. The further they went, the quieter the school became. The noise of students faded behind them. Leaves rustled overhead. Somewhere in the distance, a whistle blew from the sports field. Daniel stopped beside the old building. Lucio looked at him. "What is it?" Daniel leaned against the wall. "I just wanted to see you." Lucio looked away. "You could have said that." "I just did." For a moment, neither spoke. There was something different about the silence between them. It wasn't uncomfortable. It was almost too comfortable. Daniel stepped closer. Lucio didn't move away. The two of them stood there, caught between everything they knew they should do and everything they were beginning to feel. Then Daniel reached for Lucio's hand. Lucio looked down at their hands. "Daniel..." "I know." The words were quiet. Daniel looked at him. "So do I." The moment that followed was brief and private. Neither of them noticed the figure approaching from the other side of the building. --- Nelson had no idea what he was about to find. He had left his classroom because he'd forgotten a notebook in one of the older rooms. The shortcut behind the building was usually empty, and he preferred it to walking all the way around the sports field. His uniform was slightly untidy after a long morning. His tie had loosened, and his schoolbag hung heavily from one shoulder. He was halfway around the corner when he heard voices. He slowed. He recognized one of them. Daniel. Nelson frowned. Why would Daniel be here? He took another step. Then he saw Lucio. Nelson stopped completely. For a few seconds, he couldn't understand what he was seeing. Daniel and Lucio were standing very close together. Much closer than ordinary friends. Nelson's eyes widened. The notebook nearly slipped from his hand. Daniel noticed him first. His expression changed instantly. Lucio turned. The color seemed to drain from his face. "Nelson..." Nelson stared at them. Nobody moved. The wind pushed a few leaves across the pavement. One landed between them. Nelson finally whispered, "What...?" Lucio opened his mouth, but no words came. Daniel's expression hardened. "How long have you been standing there?" Nelson looked at him. "Long enough." The words seemed to hit Lucio harder than anything else. "Nelson, please—" "I wasn't supposed to see this," Nelson interrupted. He looked at Lucio, then back at Daniel. Everything suddenly made sense. The secret looks. The way Daniel always seemed to appear whenever Lucio was nearby. The strange tension between them. Nelson had seen pieces of it before. He just hadn't understood what those pieces meant. Until now. Daniel stepped forward. "Listen to me." Nelson immediately stepped back. "No." His voice was quieter now. "I don't want to be involved." "Then don't be," Daniel said. Nelson looked at him. "That's easy for you to say." Daniel's jaw tightened. Nelson shook his head. "You two should have been more careful." Lucio looked down. There was fear in his expression now—not fear of Daniel, but fear of what this discovery might mean. School was different from the quiet corner behind the building. People talked. Rumors traveled faster than truth. And once something became a rumor, nobody could control where it went. Nelson picked up his notebook. "I have to go." "Nelson," Lucio said again. This time, Nelson stopped. Lucio looked at him. "Please don't tell anyone." Nelson didn't answer immediately. He looked at Lucio for a long moment. Then he looked at Daniel. "I don't know what I'm going to do." And with that, he walked away. Lucio watched him disappear around the corner. The sound of his footsteps slowly faded. Daniel remained silent. Finally, Lucio whispered, "What have we done?" Daniel looked toward the direction Nelson had gone. For the first time, he didn't have an answer. --- By the time Nelson returned to the main school building, the sun had completely broken through the clouds. The courtyard was bright again. Students crowded around the lunch tables, laughing and talking as though nothing in the world had changed. But Nelson felt different. He carried a secret that suddenly felt far too heavy. He looked across the courtyard. Lucio wasn't there. Daniel wasn't there either. Nelson lowered his eyes. He knew he could keep quiet. He also knew that secrets had a way of escaping. And as the school bell rang across the compound, Nelson realized something that frightened him. He was no longer the only person who could decide what happened next. Someone else might discover the truth. And when that happened, there would be no going back.
