Chapter 7

433 Words
The rule at the club was that first-time guests must not undo their belts with their hands. I knew the rule, but having never actually worked a shift there, I had no idea how to play this game. I lowered myself, moving toward Leo's lower body. Gripping the belt with my teeth, I clumsily tugged at it. Leo burst into laughter. "You really don't know how, or are you playing innocent? Don't worry. Plenty of guys were after you back in the day. We'll take turns." He grew excited, his erection pressing right in my face. I was so disgusted I nearly vomited. Suddenly, Steven yanked me up by the arm. "Enough!" Leo recoiled in shock. "Steven, you're still—" Steven kicked him between the legs. "Get out." Leo doubled over, howling in pain, while the other men averted their eyes. Without a glance back, Steven dragged me out of the club. He shoved me into his car. "I'll give you one chance. Tell me, what do you really want?" I coughed through my laughter. "Mr. Jones, I want money. I can only work for you." Once again, I'd won. Back at the club, it wasn't just Steven who'd been gambling. He'd bet I'd run. I'd bet he'd take me away. Humiliating as it was, I'd won. Face stormy, Steven slammed the car door. "Fine. Maeve, you're unbelievable." He drove like a madman; the terrifying speed made me wonder if he intended to kill us both. I gripped the handle tightly. "Where are you taking me?" Steven's voice was icy, as if it came from the depths of hell. "The person you're trying to save won't survive tonight." He fell silent, but I immediately realized this road led to Hailey's hospital. Did he already know everything I'd done was for our daughter? I struggled to open the car door. Steven warned, "Go ahead, jump. I'll make sure that person joins you in the grave." Hailey's adorable smile flashed before my eyes. My body went rigid, and I stopped moving. The car skidded to a stop outside Central Hospital. My heart sank like a stone. Forget a successful match—Steven wouldn't let our daughter live another day. I closed my eyes helplessly. "Steven, I'll do anything you want." Three years in prison, a kidney—I'd already repaid my debt to him. Hailey was innocent. Was he really so cruel that he'd kill a child with his own hands? Steven didn't respond. When I opened my eyes, I discovered with shock that he hadn't brought me to the blood ward after all.
