A Hunter's Wrath

“Her name was Melinda. She was a S-rank swords woman” Isle said as if she is remembering something. S-rank? I heard that hunters have some weird ranking system. But I do not know much about them in details. We nobles live in a completely different life from the hunters. “She took me in and fed me. I started to work for her. I was fourteen then. As someone who just lost the most important person of my life, I was living in the darkness. She understood my situation and took care of me. In this cruel world, she was the angel who brought light into my dull world.” Isle looked at me with a serious face. “Under her guidance, I became a B-rank hunter. She became my everything. My mother. My sister. My master. Everything. I guess that is the reason, why the god even took her away?” Her eyes now turned furious as she looked at me. Like those of a leopard when it looks at it’s a prey. I suddenly felt my back quiver as she looked at me. “Do you know how she died? She was killed. By the army of Wolavia Empire. Do you know who killed her? No. Do you know why she was killed?” I shook my head abruptly. I don’t know how but I feel that her death is somehow connected to me. I gulped hard. Isle smirked suddenly that chilled the awkward atmosphere. “Two years ago,” she said, “after the death of the previous emperor and the first prince, the second prince, the present emperor, passed a very stupid law. According to the law, the hunter’s association was disbanded. All the works of the hunter’s association were termed illegal and all the hunters should only work for the government.” I have heard about that law. I remember there was a lot of uproar among hunters because of that law. “Due to this, two groups of hunters emerged. One who supported this law and the other who were against this law. Hunters who supported the law, those power-hungry bastards, got a position in the army and started to work for them. While the other group, hunters who were against this motherfucking stupid law, were arrested and jailed.” Isle again got her threatening look as if she was ready to kill me. “My master was from second group and so was I. She died fighting for her rights, and by those who once respected her. Hunters fought against hunters. Unity was considered as our pride. We used to die for each other. But that unity got shattered in front of our eyes. They became enemies of each other, hungry for each other’s blood. Do you know the pain when your own people betray you?” I know. All my life, I was only betrayed. First by my father, then brothers and then sister. Wait... who am I even calling them my family? They don’t even consider me as a part of it.   “Do you know who the f**k is the reason for all this bloodshed?” Isle asked. “The emperor?” I enquired, doubtfully. “The emperor is just a puppet. There is someone else behind the screen. Do you know who they are?” Isle asked. Her face is completely hostile. Her wide eyes were full of anger. Her serious look was scary enough to make my entire body shiver. Suddenly, I felt a strong pressure pinning me down. In midst of this, a word clicked in my mind. That one word was enough to make me chew my lips so hard that they started to bleed. That one word was enough to make my mind shudder with fear and make my blood shake violently. “Winfred” I whispered. I saw Isle nodding. Even though I did not know much about politics, but being the daughter of the most powerful family, I do know the position of my family. The Winfred family is the most powerful family in the Wolavia Empire. Strong enough to even make the royalty be wary of them. The only family who is strong enough to make even the emperor play on their strings and even kill him after he played his part was only one. Winfred. And I was a part of them. I craved my entire life for their affection. Tried my best to win their heart. But I never knew that while I was struggling to maintain my self-respect inside the family, there was such a bloodshed outside the mansions. My eyes became warm with tears. Am I dying for the sake of these people? Am I dying protecting these monsters? Why? Why did I never realise that they were so horrible? Did my eyes turned blind when I tried to blend among them? They… they are not humans. But devils living under human skin. I hate them. Not for myself. But for my prison-mate. For turning her life like this. For turning the lives of those thousands of people who should be living peacefully into criminals, rotting in this jail. I hate them. Isle was silent. She neither comforted me nor wiped my tears. But just sat at there, silently staring at me. “Isle, I don’t know what to say. I guess I should apologize you… but I guess… I cannot help you. I am sorry that I am too weak to help.” I said whatever that came into my mind. “Will you help me if you had power?” she asked. I nodded and responded, “if I had power.” She smiled at me. But this smile gave a weird feeling. As if she was waiting for this answer. I looked at her cautiously, wiping my tears. “If you don’t mind can I do an experiment on you?” she asked with the same smile. “What sort of experiment?” I asked blankly. “You will know about it later” she whispered in a creepy way. “Will I die?” What sort of idiotic question am I asking? I am gonna die tomorrow anyway. Will it matter if I die now or tomorrow? But I do not think that she will kill me. As I said, I am a VIP criminal. I should die in middle of crowd, with people throwing stones and spoiled tomatoes at me. If she will kill me now, then even she has to bear its after effects. “No” she said an obvious answer. She touched her bracelet and whispered some words. Suddenly a blue light came out of the bracelet, and there were few items on her lap. I looked her with a blank face. It was normal for people to carry magical items. But I did not expect to find one in the prison. I looked around cautiously. “Don’t worry. No one will come here till the dinner. I have been staying here for two years” Isle declared. “Did they allow it in?” I whispered, pointing towards her bracelet. “No. And you don’t have to whisper. These walls are so thick that even if you shout, no one can hear. And the iron door is strong enough that it will take nearly five minutes for someone to push it.” What she said was true. Even when I entered it took the guard few minutes to open it. But that is not important. “But how did you bring that bracelet…?” “Ah… did I forgot to tell that I am a mage type hunter?”
