The rescuer The girl remained silent the whole way. She didn't say anything when Mason Stone let her out of the car, didn't make a sound when they passed the building's guardhouse together. She merely nodded when the detective offered her a drink. She wasn't scared of him or upset about what had happened in the alley. She was trying to figure out who was in front of her and why he had risked so much for a night with her. At first glance, he was not a rich man: the flat was cramped and even if it wasn't falling apart, champagne and caviar were not to be expected. The walls were bare and the furnishings minimal, uncluttered but too impersonal. Someone who didn't really exist could have lived there. Vesper speculated that it might not be the man's flat, that it was the one he usually took
