The Shadow As the glow of the explosion disappeared around the bend, Mason Stone switched on the Auburn's surviving beacon. He climbed about a kilometre before the mansion appeared. In Roger Koontz's car he approached at a walking pace until he was within a few feet of the front gate. While one hand held the steering wheel, the other gripped the gun. He had to wait almost a minute before the gate swung open. Mason entered, sticking his hand out of the window in thanks. He pushed himself almost under the front steps, as close as he could get.
