Chapter 13: Instinct

The door didn’t just open. It exploded inward. Wood splintered. Metal cracked. And in the next second— Men flooded the room. Fast. Armed. Precise. “DOWN!” Liam shouted. Sophia dropped instantly behind the couch. Alexander pulled Isabella back— But this time— Something inside her didn’t react the way it used to. She didn’t freeze. She didn’t panic. She noticed. Everything. At once. The angle of the first man entering. The way his weight shifted to the left. The timing of the second man behind him. The sound of a weapon being raised before it was even visible. Her breathing slowed. Not faster. Slower. Controlled. Focused. Gunfire erupted. Loud. Sharp. Echoing. But to Isabella— It felt distant. Like her mind had stepped outside of the chaos. “Stay behind me!” Alexander shouted. But she didn’t move. Because something deeper had taken over. Something… familiar. A man rushed toward her from the side. Too fast. Too close. And without thinking— She moved. Not away. Into it. She grabbed his wrist mid-motion— Twisted— Dropped her weight— And sent him crashing to the ground with a force that shocked even her. The weapon slid across the floor. Silence hit for a split second. Because everyone saw it. Liam’s eyes widened. Sophia froze. Even Alexander— Looked stunned. Isabella stared at her own hands. Her breath catching. “What… did I just—?” Another attacker lunged toward her. No time to think. No time to question. Her body reacted again. Faster this time. Cleaner. More precise. She ducked. Pivoted. Struck. The man hit the ground hard. Unconscious. Her heart pounded now— Not from fear. But from realization. “I didn’t learn this…” she whispered. “Yes, you did.” Alexander’s voice. Close. Steady. But filled with something else now. Something almost like awe. “You just don’t remember it.” The room erupted again. More movement. More danger. But now— Isabella wasn’t just surviving. She was fighting. Liam grabbed one of the attackers, slamming him into the wall. Sophia stayed low, pulling something from a drawer—a small taser. Alexander moved like controlled chaos beside her. Precise. Deadly. Protective. But his attention kept drifting back to her. Watching. Measuring. Realizing. “She’s activating,” Liam said under his breath. Isabella heard it. And something about that word— Activating— Sent a chill through her. “Don’t call me that,” she snapped. But even she didn’t believe it fully. Because she felt it. Inside her. Something unlocking. Another attacker raised a weapon— Aimed directly at Alexander. “WATCH OUT!” Isabella shouted. But she didn’t wait. She moved. Faster than before. Faster than she thought possible. She shoved Alexander out of the way— The shot fired— And time slowed— Pain exploded through her shoulder. She gasped. Her body jerking back. “ISABELLA!” Alexander’s voice broke through everything. The room blurred. Sound faded. Her knees buckled. But she didn’t fall. Because her body— Refused to. Her hand pressed against the wound. Blood. Warm. Real. But something else— Something strange— Was happening. The pain wasn’t spreading. It was… contained. Her breathing slowed again. Too fast. Too controlled. Too unnatural. “What’s happening to me…” she whispered. Alexander caught her before she could lose balance. His hands firm on her arms. His eyes scanning her. “Stay with me,” he said. “I am…” she said weakly. But her voice didn’t match her body. Because she wasn’t fading. She was stabilizing. Liam noticed it first. “…That’s not normal,” he said. Sophia looked up. “What do you mean?” Liam’s eyes stayed locked on Isabella. “She’s not going into shock.” Alexander’s jaw tightened. Because he saw it too. “You’re healing,” he said quietly. Isabella froze. “…What?” Before anyone could process it— The remaining attackers retreated. Fast. Unexpectedly. Like they had seen enough. The room fell into silence again. Broken only by Isabella’s breathing. Her hand slowly pulled away from her shoulder. Blood still there. But less. Already slowing. Her eyes widened. “No…” she whispered. Alexander stepped closer. His expression unreadable now. “You weren’t just trained,” he said. Her heart pounded. “Then what am I?” she asked again. This time— He answered without hesitation. “You’re evolving.” Silence. Heavy. Terrifying. She shook her head. “No… no, I don’t want this.” “You don’t get to choose it,” Liam said quietly. Her chest tightened. Tears burned her eyes again. “I just wanted a normal life…” Alexander stepped closer. Gentler this time. Different. “You still can have one,” he said. She looked at him. Broken. Searching. “After all this?” He didn’t answer right away. Because they both knew— That wasn’t true. But then— Something shifted. He reached for her. Slowly. Carefully. His hand brushed her cheek again— Wiping away a tear she didn’t realize had fallen. “You’re not alone in this,” he said softly. Her breath caught. The world quieted. Again. And this time— He didn’t stop. He leaned in. Closer. Closer. And finally— He kissed her. Soft. But intense. Like everything they had been holding back finally broke through. Fear. Tension. Truth. All of it. For a moment— Nothing else existed. Then— A sharp sound broke it. A phone. Liam’s. He pulled away slightly, checking the screen. And his expression changed instantly. “What is it?” Sophia asked. Liam looked up slowly. His voice low. Serious. “They weren’t trying to capture her.” Isabella’s heart dropped. “Then what were they doing?” Liam’s gaze locked onto hers. “They were testing you
