Chapter 9: Trust No One

1214 Words
Isabella’s instincts screamed at her. Something wasn’t right. Liam stood in the doorway, his posture tense, his expression unreadable—but there was something different about him now. Something colder. “They’re already inside.” The words echoed in her mind. Sophia stepped forward first. “What do you mean ‘inside’?” she demanded. “Security cleared the entire—” “Security didn’t catch them,” Liam interrupted sharply. “That’s the problem.” Isabella’s heart pounded faster. “How do you know that?” she asked. His eyes flicked to her. For a split second— He hesitated. And that hesitation changed everything. “Where’s Alexander?” Isabella asked again, her voice firmer this time. Liam didn’t answer immediately. “He’s handling something,” he said finally. “That’s not an answer,” Sophia snapped. Liam ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated. “We don’t have time for this,” he said. “If they’re after the file, then they’re already ahead of us.” Isabella’s stomach dropped. “The file is gone,” she said quietly. “I know,” Liam replied. That made her freeze. “You know?” she repeated. The room went still. Sophia turned slowly toward him. “…Liam?” He exhaled. “I saw it happen.” Isabella’s pulse spiked. “You saw someone break into the penthouse… and didn’t stop them?” she said. “I tried,” he snapped. “But they weren’t here for long.” “That makes no sense,” Sophia said. “This place is locked down.” “Not from the inside,” Liam said quietly. Silence. Heavy. Dangerous silence. Isabella’s chest tightened. “…What are you saying?” Liam’s gaze hardened. “I’m saying someone helped them.” The words hit like a shockwave. Sophia shook her head immediately. “No. No, that’s not possible.” “Everything about this is possible now,” Liam said. Isabella took a slow step back. Her mind racing. “Then who?” she asked. Liam didn’t answer right away. Instead, his eyes moved between them. Calculating. Thinking. That same cold feeling crept up Isabella’s spine again. “Why are you looking at us like that?” she asked quietly. Liam’s voice dropped. “Because it has to be someone close.” Sophia let out a breath. “This is insane.” “Is it?” he challenged. Isabella crossed her arms, her voice steady despite the fear building inside her. “Start talking clearly,” she said. “No more half answers.” Liam looked at her for a long moment. Then— He reached into his jacket. Isabella tensed instantly. Sophia stepped forward. “Liam—what are you doing?” But he didn’t pull out a weapon. He pulled out a phone. And turned the screen toward them. Isabella’s breath caught. It was security footage. From inside the penthouse. Time-stamped just minutes ago. The hallway. The office door. And then— A figure entering. Hooded. Fast. Moving like they knew exactly where to go. Isabella leaned closer. “Can you zoom in?” Liam nodded. The image sharpened slightly. It's still blurry. But clearer. The person reached the office. Opened the drawer. Took the file. And turned— Just enough for their face to be seen. Isabella’s heart stopped. Sophia gasped. Because they both recognized him. “No…” Sophia whispered. “That’s not possible.” Isabella’s voice came out barely audible. “…Alexander?” The man in the footage— Was him. Silence filled the room like a vacuum. Isabella’s chest tightened painfully. Her mind rejected it instantly. “No,” she said, shaking her head. “No, that’s not—there has to be another explanation.” Liam didn’t argue. But he didn’t agree either. “I’m just showing you what the cameras recorded,” he said. Sophia stepped back, visibly shaken. “This doesn’t make sense,” she said. “Why would Alex steal the file?” Isabella’s thoughts spiralled. Because it didn’t make sense. He was the one protecting her. Helping her. Wasn’t he? Then why— “Unless…” Liam said slowly. They both looked at him. “Unless he never intended to protect her,” he finished. The words landed hard. Too hard. “No,” Isabella said immediately. Her voice was stronger now. Certain. “That’s not true.” Liam raised an eyebrow. “You’re defending him?” “Yes,” she said without hesitation. “After everything?” Isabella stepped forward. “After everything,” she repeated. Because despite the lies… Despite the secrets… Something in her told her Alexander wasn’t the enemy. Liam studied her carefully. Then nodded slightly. “Alright,” he said. “Then let’s test that.” Her stomach dropped. “…Test?” Before he could explain— Footsteps echoed from the hallway. All three of them turned. Slow. Measured. Familiar. And then— Alexander appeared in the doorway. His expression was unreadable. His eyes moved from Sophia— To Liam— And finally— To Isabella. “Everyone’s gathered,” he said calmly. “But not for long.” Isabella stepped forward immediately. “Where were you?” she demanded. He didn’t answer. Her chest tightened. “Alexander.” Still nothing. Liam crossed his arms. “Perfect timing,” he said. Alexander’s gaze shifted to him. “You showed them?” “Yes.” Silence. Tension crackled in the air. Then Isabella spoke. “Is it true?” she asked. Her voice was quieter now. More dangerous. “Did you take the file?” Alexander didn’t look away. “…Yes.” The word shattered everything. Sophia stepped back in shock. “Alex—why would you—” But Isabella didn’t move. Didn’t react. Not at first. She just stared at him. Waiting. “Explain,” she said. Alexander’s jaw tightened. “I did what I had to do.” “That’s not an explanation.” “It’s the only one you’re getting right now.” Her heart cracked. “You lied to me,” she said. “Yes.” The honesty made it worse. “You said you were protecting me.” “I am.” “Then why take the one thing that could give me answers?!” Alexander stepped closer. His voice lowered. “Because you’re not ready for those answers.” Anger flared instantly. “That’s not your decision!” “It is when your life is on the line!” The words hit hard. Silence followed. Heavy. Emotional. Dangerous. Isabella’s chest rose and fell rapidly. “Then tell me the truth,” she said. Alexander looked at her. And for the first time— There was something raw in his expression. Something real. “If I tell you everything,” he said quietly… “There’s no going back.” Her heart pounded. “I’m already past that.” A long pause. Then— Alexander took a step closer. Close enough that the tension between them became something else entirely. Something deeper. It's more intense. “You’re not just part of the project,” he said. Her breath caught. “Then what am I?” His voice dropped to almost a whisper. “You’re the reason it exists.”
