—Mabel— The revolving door of Allwell swept open, and I stepped into the polished lobby. Monday mornings always gave Allwell a different kind of energy. Engineers crossed the glass atrium with steaming coffee cups in one hand and tablets in the other. Executives disappeared into elevators, and assistants hurried through the corridors balancing folders against their hips. Conversations seemed to soften before picking up again. Heads turned. A few familiar faces smiled in recognition. “Good morning, Ms. Parker.” “Morning.” “Congratulations. You represented Allwell beautifully.” “Thank you.” I returned each greeting with a polite smile and continued to the elevators. Seconds later, with a chime, the doors opened into the executive floor, and I saw James talking with another employee.
