The foreman looked down at the paper. “We the jury find the defendant—” Dorothy’s fingernails dug into her palms. “—not guilty of second-degree murder.” The courtroom erupted. Dorothy could hear it through the TV speakers. Gasps. Murmurs. Someone crying. But the foreman wasn’t finished. Judge Morrison banged her gavel. “Order. The jury will continue.” The foreman looked back at the paper. “On the charge of child endangerment, we find the defendant guilty.” More gasps. “On the charge of child neglect resulting in harm to a child, we find the defendant guilty.” Dorothy watched Maya collapse into Jennifer’s arms. The camera zoomed in on her face—devastated, crying. “On the charge of tampering with evidence, we find the defendant not guilty.” Judge Morrison banged her gavel again.
