Jake ordered the DNA test that night. Dorothy heard him in the home office after Kylee was in bed, the clicking of his keyboard, the sound of his credit card being pulled from his wallet. She stood in the hallway, listening, her heart pounding. A few minutes later, Jake emerged. “It’ll be here in two days. Express shipping.” Dorothy nodded. “Okay.” “I’m going to bed.” Jake walked past her without meeting her eyes. Dorothy stayed up late, sitting on the couch in the dark living room, thinking.
