Worse yet, the dead man ignored the shot to his chest and advanced on Dalen, choking him with both hands. Squealing and wheezing, Dalen struggled to get free. It did him no good. Miri drew another throwing knife, tossed it up and caught the tip of the blade. She flung it at the man and watched it land in the back of his head. He thrashed once, then released Dalen and fell to the ground. More enemies were charging up the stairs. Another six men in colourless, Eradian uniforms trampled over their fallen companions as they raced toward Miri like a pack of feral beasts. She braced herself for the fight. An arrow landed on the fifth step. “Get clear!” Miri did as she was told, taking cover behind a pillar and gripping it tightly. She risked a peek and saw half a dozen bodies being tossed
