CHAPTER 10Inspector Bull pushed the bell at Mr. Biddle’s house in Bedford Square and waited. After a while he pushed it again, and looked over the iron railing into the area. There was a dim glow of light in the area window. Muffled kitchen sounds came up to him. He pushed the bell again, and held his finger on it, peering through the narrow curtained windows on either side of the white Adam door. After a time a door opened at the end of the reception hall and a dark figure came through it, closing it again behind him.
