When I arrived on the thirteenth floor, Gavin was talking to his assistant.
"The wedding gown should be satin. Hire a designer from the brand directly. Daisy's been talking about it forever. And make sure there are roses all over the castle venue. They're her favorite flowers."
The irony was almost laughable.
When we'd gotten married, Gavin claimed he was too busy to help with the wedding preparations. He'd left everything to me.
He barely attended the rehearsals. On the wedding day, he almost embarrassed himself because he didn't even know the schedule.
Now I understood why. Because it had never been real to him.
If he wasn't willing to give me a real marriage certificate, why would he care about giving me a real wedding?
The affectionate smile on Gavin's face vanished the moment he saw me.
"Why are you here? Who brought you upstairs? The front desk?"
I caught every trace of panic in his eyes before replying casually. "A woman named Daisy. She's also wearing my mother's emerald."
Gavin immediately looked uncomfortable. "Daisy is a promising young artist we've been working with recently. As for the emerald, she said it inspired her creatively. I only lent it to her temporarily."
A promising young artist?
I'd spent years in the art world. I kept up with exhibitions, emerging talents, and industry news. How come I'd never heard of her?
Gavin walked over and gently ruffled my hair. "Be good. I promise I'll get it back once you return from Paris."
Return from Paris. If only he knew. I wasn't coming back.
"I want it returned now."
His hand froze. "Sandra, stop being unreasonable. Daisy's only borrowing it. It's not like she's stealing it."
I almost laughed. "Taking back my own property is 'unreasonable'?"
My refusal to back down clearly irritated him. The warmth disappeared from his eyes.
"You are an artist too. You know how important inspiration is. I don't know when you became so selfish. If you're going to keep acting like this, then we have nothing left to discuss."
A knock interrupted us.
We both turned. Daisy was standing in the doorway.
She looked pitiful and vulnerable. "Actually, if Miss Myers really wants it back, that's fine. It's not like I was refusing to return it."
The disappointment in Gavin's eyes deepened. "Look at Daisy. She's far more considerate than you are."
I said nothing. Instead, I walked straight toward Daisy and reached for the necklace around her neck.
Suddenly, she stumbled backward and fell.
"Miss Myers! If you wanted the necklace, you could've just taken it. Why did you have to push me?"
Gavin rushed forward immediately. He scooped her into his arms and comforted her softly. Then he turned to me in fury.
"Sandra! Look at what you've done!"
I didn't bother defending myself. I hadn't pushed her.
My eyes were fixed on the floor. The emerald lay there in pieces.
When Daisy fell, she'd deliberately yanked the necklace off and thrown it down. The gemstone had shattered completely.
Gavin saw it too. For a brief second, he hesitated.
Then Daisy whimpered in his arms. His expression hardened once more.
"If you hadn't tried to grab it, this never would've happened. In the end, this is still your fault."
I let out a cold laugh. Then I crouched down and carefully gathered the shattered pieces.
After slipping them into my pocket, I stood up and slapped Daisy across the face.
Gavin exploded. "Sandra! When did you become so rude?"
I ignored him. Turning around, I headed for the elevator.
As the doors closed, I heard Gavin speaking to his assistant behind me.
"Cancel every exhibition Sandra is currently planning. From now on, all company resources go to Daisy's exhibitions."
Years ago, Gavin had created an entire department solely to organize my exhibitions. The whole team existed for me.
Now that privilege belonged to someone else.
And honestly, I didn't need it anymore.
