Chapter Twelve
Six girls were publicly flogged following the riot: two who were considered to be the ringleaders, plus the girl who was identified setting light to the bedding; and the three landing reps, for failing to prevent it. The business took more than an hour, with everyone standing to attention in special assembly in Hall.
The girls waiting to be flogged stood in a line on the left-hand side of the stage, nude, facing the assembly. The last one’s face showed it was almost a relief to her when her turn came. Each flogging seemed to take so long: the six strokes on the hands and legs, turn round, go to the bar, bend over, be hoisted, eight resounding whacks on the bottom, eight on the back of the thighs, another eight on the bottom.
