My jaw drops to the floor. How does this person know I'm here? I went through so much to make sure no one knew I was here. My ears begin ringing, I’m frozen in place in terror. Did I just put my best friend’s family in danger?
“I’m scared, do you know who this is?”
“If I knew I would tell you.”
“I have to know. How does this person know me? What do they want with me?” start breathing heavy and the panic settles in.
"Take a breath, I don’t think they want to harm you. Sounds like they even want to help you.
“Let’s go figure this out. I need answers.”
“Mir, what about your stuff?”
I grumble. “Forget it, we need to go!”
“Sheesh okay, let’s go. We can walk, you need fresh air.”
I bolt back to the bedroom, grab my backpack and my notebooks and head off to the library. Reah will let us stay as long as we like and I’m going to need it. I’ve been missing out of a major factor in my life. Someone knows me, and they know the truth. Who am I? Tornadoes invade my mind of scenarios that could end up being the truth. Who was this mysterious person that identified themselves as K.A?
“Earth to Mira!” Salem’s shout echoed in my mind, snapping me out of my trance. “You okay in there?”
“Yeah, well kinda, okay yeah no I’m freaking out.”
“I can tell. Please, breathe. We will find who you are.”
“What if I don’t like what I find? Can I go back to how I was?”
“We don’t know until we try.”
The rest of the walk, I’m silent. I’m trying to figure out what I’ll need to get to look up the Corbin’s. I know the section well but never wanted to look at the family that raised me too in-depth. I need to find out what happened that night I remember before Killian took me in.
As I see the library come in sight, I pick up the pace and sprint, leaving Salem trailing me. She hollers at me but I’m too nervous to stop or listen. The blood coursing inside me accelerates and I'm shaking as I reach the doors. It’s the moment of truth. I’m going to learn who I am. I know there are lies around that family, but I may not know the extent.
Once at the door, Reah sees me and opens it. I forgot I was still sprinting over there.
“Mir what in the world is going on with you?!”
“Sorry Reah, I have a lot to tell you. I kinda should wait for Salem, I left her behind.”
“Mira Leigh! What in the hell were you thinking running off?!” The door flings open and my best friend appears in the doorway.
“My mind took over, sorry. I honestly didn’t even think.” Whispering, I know she’s fuming mad.
“I can tell!”
We sit down and brief Reah on what happened today. Between the spell she taught Salem working better than normal, the note, and finally going over my identity with her, there was a lot to take in. The emotion in her face changed with each topic, and I felt bad giving her so much at once.
“So, wait, you’re telling me you’re a Corbin?” Reah is pale and I can see the trembling in her fingers.
“I’m not related by blood, they took me in. They tried to say I was theirs, but I have this, well I have the same dream.”
“Dream?” the unison response hits me and I want to shut down. I have never told anyone about this, even my best friend. I feel bad but I never knew what it meant.
“Mir why didn’t you tell me? How long have you had this dream for?”
“Since I was little. I never knew what it meant. I’m guessing it means something now.”
“I’m disappointed you never told me,” tears well up in Salem’s eyes. I try to move towards her, but she jumps away. “Don’t. I need a minute.” Without another word, she walks outside, tears dropping to the floor around her as she goes.
Reah glances at me, assuring me that she will be okay and to just give her space. We can discuss this later. I make my way to the back and start pulling every book that mentions the Corbin family or war either started or ended by them. Reah helped and we spent the next few minutes in silence.
“Mir, you okay?” Reah glanced over and saw my tears.
“Not really, I never meant to hide it, I just never understood what it all meant. I didn’t think it had meaning until now.”
“I believe you, and she will too. She loves you dearly and like a sister. I mean you have the same birthday and you’re the same person in different bodies. Hell, I love you both like my own. That’s why you both are always welcome and if you need help please don’t hesitate to ask.”
“Reah thank you, it means more than you know. I never have felt love like this from anyone but you both.”
“Don’t forget about Pandora.” Salem’s voice cuts in. “She loves you too.” My emotions boil over and I hug both of them like it was the last time. The emotions I bottled away emotions pour out and their response was simple. They held on for dear life and gave me a response that I've needed for years.
“I love you. Let’s find out who you truly are.”
