Winning Her Trust

1134 Words
The air in the pack house kitchen was thick with the scent of spices as Katie stirred a pot of stew. Her hands moved on autopilot, but her mind was elsewhere — trapped in the dark thoughts of her recent loss. Her child, the one she never even knew about was gone And the crushing silence that followed had become unbearable. The door creaked open, and Katie’s grip on the spoon tightened when she heard the familiar voice she least wanted to hear. “Well, look at you, hard at work,” Rihanna said, her tone light, almost too sweet. Katie didn’t turn. She focused on the stew, refusing to let Rihanna’s presence throw her off. “What do you want?” Rihanna walked further in, her heels clicking softly against the floor. “Nothing, really. Just checking in.” Katie scoffed, finally glancing over her shoulder. “Checking in? That’s rich, coming from you.” Rihanna smiled faintly. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Katie put down the spoon and turned fully to face her. “Yesterday, you made it very clear what you think of me. You said I was playing the pity card to win sympathy from the pack. So, forgive me if I’m a little confused by this sudden… kindness.” Rihanna tilted her head, as if considering her words carefully. “I won’t lie, Katie. I did say that.” Katie crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. “And now you’re here, being nice? What’s changed?” Rihanna shrugged. “I’ve had some time to think. Maybe I was too harsh.” Katie raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Too harsh? You’ve hated me from the moment I got here.” Rihanna’s expression softened, and she stepped closer. “It wasn’t hate. It was… caution.” “Caution?” Katie echoed. “You betrayed your former pack,” Rihanna said bluntly. “That’s a fact. And when someone like you joins a new pack, it raises questions. I needed to make sure you wouldn’t do the same thing to us.” Katie frowned, her chest tightening at the reminder of her past mistakes. “I get that, but you don’t know what happened.” “I know enough,” Rihanna said. “But I also know people make mistakes. And maybe I’ve been holding that over your head for too long.” Katie let out a slow breath. “So, what? You’ve suddenly decided to give me a chance?” Rihanna nodded. “Everyone deserves a second chance, don’t they?” Katie studied her for a moment, trying to gauge her sincerity. “Why now?” “Because I’ve been thinking about your situation,” Rihanna said softly. “You’ve lost so much already. Maybe it’s time someone in this pack showed you a little compassion.” Katie blinked, taken aback. “I… I don’t know what to say.” Rihanna smiled. “Say you’ll give me a chance, too.” Katie hesitated before nodding. “Alright. I’ll try.” The tension in the room eased, and Rihanna’s smile widened. “Good. Now, how about we get out of here for a bit? It’s a nice day outside.” Katie looked at her, surprised. “You want to take a walk? With me?” “Why not?” Rihanna shrugged. “It’ll be good to clear your head.” Katie considered it for a moment, then nodded. “Okay. Sure.” The two women strolled along the pack’s grounds, the fresh air doing little to ease Katie’s troubled mind. She kicked at stones as they walked, her thoughts drifting back to her child. The loss was still raw, and no amount of distraction could dull the ache. “So,” Katie said after a while, breaking the silence. “Why are you really doing this?” Rihanna glanced at her. “What do you mean?” Katie sighed. “Why are you being so nice? You’ve never been nice to me before.” Rihanna chuckled softly. “Why is it so hard to believe that I’m just trying to be friendly?” “Because you’re not,” Katie said bluntly. “You’ve always made it clear that you don’t trust me.” Rihanna’s expression grew serious. “I told you, it wasn’t about trust. It was about protecting my pack.” “And now?” “Now… I think you’ve suffered enough,” Rihanna said gently. “You’ve lost your child. That kind of pain changes a person. I’m starting to see that you’re not a threat.” Katie’s eyes softened, and she nodded. “I can understand why you’d feel that way. But I’m not the same person I was before.” Rihanna smiled. “That’s what I’m counting on.” They continued their walk in silence, the only sound being the crunch of gravel beneath their feet. As they approached the pack house entrance, Rihanna suddenly slowed her pace. Katie followed her gaze and froze. There, standing at the entrance, was Jerome. His arms were wrapped around another woman, and he was kissing her like the rest of the world didn’t exist. Katie’s heart clenched painfully in her chest. Her first instinct was to storm over and demand answers. But she forced herself to take a deep breath, steadying her trembling hands. Without a word, she walked past them, her gaze fixed straight ahead. She refused to give Jerome or the other woman the satisfaction of seeing her pain. Rihanna watched with a sly smile. She had seen what she wanted her to see. That evening, the pack gathered for dinner. Everywhere was filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses. The celebration was meant to bring everyone together, but Katie felt like an outsider once again. As she sat at a corner table, lost in thought, Rihanna approached with a tall man by her side. “Katie,” Rihanna said with a bright smile. “I’d like you to meet my brother, Rohan.” Katie looked up, forcing a polite smile. “Nice to meet you.” Rohan extended his hand. “Nice to meet you, too. I’ve heard a lot about you.” Katie arched an eyebrow. “Good things, I hope.” Rohan chuckled. “Mostly.” Rihanna smirked. “Don’t worry, I only told him the good parts.” Katie gave a small laugh, though her mind was elsewhere. She couldn’t shake the image of Jerome kissing that other woman. It was a reminder of how little she mattered to him now. As the evening wore on, Katie couldn’t help but notice the way Rohan kept glancing at her. There was something in his gaze — curiosity, interest, maybe even a hint of something more. But Katie wasn’t ready for that. Not yet.
