Chapter 10: Unveiling the Truth
The next day, I met William at the old oak tree in the park. His eyes sparkled with anticipation as he led me to a secluded spot. "I want to show you something," William said, his voice filled with emotion. He pulled out a small, leather-bound book. "This was my mother's journal." William's hands trembled as he handed it to me.
As I opened the journal, a faint scent of lavender wafted out. The pages were filled with elegant script, detailing a life of luxury and pain. Emily, William's mother, wrote of her husband's cruelty and infidelity. The words cut deep, revealing a dark history that William had kept hidden. I felt a pang of sorrow, understanding the scars that William carried.
"Why are you showing me this?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
William's eyes locked onto mine. "I want you to understand me, Shine. I want you to see the truth." His voice cracked. "My family's past is complicated. My father's actions... they haunt me." William's face contorted in anguish. "But I promise, I'm not like him. I'll never hurt you."
Tomi's words echoed in my mind: "James' family has secrets, Shine. Dark secrets." Now, I understood. William's behavior, his possessiveness, and his desperation made sense. He was fighting against the demons of his past.
As I closed the journal, a sense of resolve formed within me. I needed to confront Tomi, to ask him why he knew and didn't tell me. The secrets and lies had to end.
"Thank you for showing me this," I said, my voice filled with empathy.
William's face relaxed, his eyes filling with gratitude. "Thank you for understanding," William replied.
But as we parted ways, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to the story. More secrets hidden beneath the surface.
