Chapter 11: The Emperor Above the Clouds Silence gripped the Grand Hall. Not the silence of peace. The silence that came before kingdoms fell. The nobles stood frozen beneath the towering windows, their faces drained of color as they stared at the empty sky. The black crown had vanished, yet its presence lingered like a nightmare that refused to end. No one spoke. No one dared. Finally, King Alaric broke the silence. "Seal the capital." His voice carried through the hall with the authority of a ruler who had spent decades commanding armies. "Close every gate." "Recall every soldier." "Activate the ancient barriers." The commanders bowed immediately. "At once, Your Majesty." Within moments, the palace erupted into organized chaos. Messengers sprinted through corridors. Massive bells rang across the capital. Mages hurried toward the city walls, chanting ancient spells as enormous crystal pillars awakened one after another. Outside, frightened citizens looked toward the palace, wondering what enemy could force the kingdom into such desperate measures. --- Aiden stood near the window. His eyes remained fixed on the sky. That voice... It still echoed inside his mind. Not as a sound. As a memory. A throne. Golden pillars stretching endlessly into the heavens. An emperor dressed in robes darker than midnight. A crown of black stars resting upon his head. The emperor smiled. "You were always too kind, Aiden." The memory ended before Aiden could see his face. He staggered backward, grabbing the edge of a nearby pillar. Seraphina caught him before he could fall. "Another memory?" He nodded. "I've seen him before." Lucien's expression became unreadable. "Did you see his face?" "No." "But..." Aiden hesitated. "I remember how he made me feel." "And?" "...Uneasy." Lucien exhaled slowly. "Then your instincts are still alive." --- King Alaric approached them. His armor reflected the golden light pouring through the stained-glass ceiling. "I've made a decision." Everyone turned toward him. "You cannot remain in the capital." Several nobles immediately protested. "What?" "Your Majesty, he's the one they're after!" "Exactly." The king's voice remained calm. "If he stays here, the capital becomes the battlefield." One noble slammed his fist onto the table. "So we'll hand him over?" King Alaric's gaze hardened. "No." "We protect our people." Then he looked at Aiden. "And we protect the boy who just saved them." For the first time since entering the palace, Aiden saw genuine sincerity in someone's eyes. It caught him off guard. --- Night fell quickly. The palace prepared in silence. Aiden stood alone on a balcony overlooking the sleeping city. Thousands of lights stretched toward the horizon like stars scattered across the earth. He wondered how many people below even knew his name. Probably very few. Perhaps that was for the best. "You always liked quiet places." Lucien stepped onto the balcony. Aiden didn't turn around. "You keep saying things like that." "Because they're true." Aiden rested his hands on the stone railing. "Tell me something." Lucien nodded. "If I really was this great king..." "Why don't I remember the people I loved?" Lucien smiled sadly. "Because those memories were the first ones you sealed." Aiden finally looked at him. "Why would I do that?" Lucien stared at the moon. "Because losing them hurt too much." Neither of them spoke for several minutes. The wind carried the scent of rain through the city. Finally, Aiden asked the question that had haunted him since awakening. "Did I have a family?" Lucien closed his eyes. "Yes." "A wife?" "...Yes." "Children?" Lucien's silence answered before his words did. "...A daughter." Aiden's heart stopped. A daughter. Somewhere in another lifetime... He had been a father. "What happened to them?" Lucien looked away. "I don't know." "You don't know?" "The night you died..." "Everything burned." --- Far above the mortal world... Beyond the clouds... Beyond the stars... A colossal palace floated in endless darkness. Its walls were carved from black crystal. Its towers pierced the heavens themselves. Thousands of armored warriors knelt in perfect rows. None dared raise their heads. At the center of the palace stood a throne unlike any ever created. It was forged from the broken weapons of fallen gods. Upon it sat the man whose voice had echoed across the kingdom. His face remained hidden beneath a crown of living shadow. Only his golden eyes could be seen. A soldier knelt before him. "Your Majesty." "The Immortal King has awakened." "I know." "He has already recovered fragments of his memories." The Emperor rested one hand against the arm of his throne. "So." "It begins earlier than expected." The soldier lowered his head further. "Shall we dispatch another legion?" The Emperor chuckled. A calm, almost amused sound. "No." "They will fail." The soldier looked confused. "Then what are your orders?" The Emperor slowly stood. The entire palace trembled. Space itself distorted around him. "There is only one person capable of killing Aiden Arclight." He placed a hand over his own chest. "Me." --- Back in the capital... Aiden suddenly gripped the balcony railing. His chest burned. Not with pain. With recognition. He could feel someone. Far away. Watching him. The Immortal King's voice whispered urgently. "He's awake." Aiden frowned. "Who?" For the first time since their souls had begun merging... The Immortal King's voice trembled. "The man I could never defeat." A cold wind swept across the balcony. Aiden looked toward the stars. Though he could see nothing... He had the terrifying feeling that someone beyond the heavens was looking back. End of Chapter 11
