CHAPTER 5
Denzel and I had been apart for 5 years now, and the distance was taking its toll on our relationship. At first, we'd talk daily, sharing every detail of our lives. But as time went on, the conversations became less frequent.
Weeks would go by without a word from him. I'd send messages, calling out into the void, hoping he'd respond. But the silence was deafening.
I felt like I was losing him, like we were drifting apart. I tried to stay positive, to hold on to the love we shared, but it was getting harder. I even suggested I join him over there, but he said he needed to settle down and make some money before I could join him.
Was our love strong enough to withstand the distance and the silence? Or was it slowly fading away?
So many times, I will cry as I call Denzel, my voice shaking with emotion.
"What's happening to us?" I asked, feeling desperate.
Denzel's tone was apologetic, but distant.
"I know, I know. Life is difficult here. I'm trying to settle down with my new job, and it's taking up all my time."
I felt a pang of frustration. "But what about us? Don't we matter to you?"
Denzel sighed. "Of course, you matter. But you don't understand how hard it is here. I'm barely scraping by. I don't have time for long conversations."
His words stung.
"You're not even making an effort to talk to me. Weeks go by without a word. It feels like you're giving up on us."
Denzel's response was laced with guilt, but it didn't reassure me.
"I'm sorry, Hikma. I'll try to do better."
But the damage was done. I felt like I was losing him, like our relationship was slipping away.
Denzel's voice took on a hopeful tone. "I was thinking... if you could help me out with some money for my business, I could settle down faster and we could finally be together."
My heart skipped a beat. "How much do you need?"
Denzel hesitated before answering. "A significant amount. But I promise it'll be worth it. I'll pay you back, and we can start our life together."
Part of me wanted to believe him, to trust that this was the solution to our problems. But another part of me was wary. Was this just an excuse?
"Denzel, I need to think about it," I said, trying to sound cautious.
Denzel's tone turned persuasive. "Hikma, please. This is our chance to be together. Don't let it slip away."
I decided to trust Denzel and went the extra mile to help him. I scraped together every penny I had, taking out a loan from a friend and using my savings.
As I transferred the money, I felt a mix of emotions – hope, love, and a hint of uncertainty. Would this work? Would Denzel finally settle down and come for me?
The days turned into weeks, and I waited anxiously for updates from Denzel. But the updates never came. Instead, the silence stretched out, and I was left wondering if I'd made a huge mistake.
The doubts crept in, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that I'd been deceived. Was Denzel truly working hard to build a life for us, or was he using me for financial gain?
The uncertainty was eating away at me, and I didn't know what to do next.
Despite the doubts, I chose to believe in Denzel. I convinced myself that he was working hard to settle down, that he was busy building a life for us.
I waited patiently, sending occasional messages to check in. Denzel would respond sporadically, reassuring me that everything was fine, that he was making progress.
While I was waiting patiently, I made a new friend, Ella whom I always hang out and also communicate with Amina on the phone.
Ella noticed the way I seemed lost in thought, always checking my phone. She’d ask if everything was okay, but I just smiled and said yes.
The truth was, I was holding on to the hope that Denzel and I would be together soon. I was willing to wait, to sacrifice, as long as it meant we could build a life together.
But as the months dragged on, the silence between us grew thicker, and I began to wonder... was Denzel's silence a sign of something more sinister?
One day, Ella approached me with concern etched on her face.
"Hikma, I've noticed you've been distant lately. Is everything okay? You can trust me."
I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something about Ella's kind eyes put me at ease.
"It's Denzel," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "We've been apart for so long, and I'm starting to wonder if he's still interested."
Ella listened attentively, her expression empathetic. "You deserve better than to be left in limbo, Hikma. Maybe it's time to reevaluate your priorities."
Her words struck a chord. Was I holding on too tightly to a relationship that might not be working? I pushed the thought aside, but it lingered, refusing to be silenced.
As I pondered Ella's words, Amina's voice echoed in my mind –
"Follow your heart, Hikma."
But what if my heart was leading me astray?
The doubts swirled, and I felt lost, torn between loyalty to Denzel and the uncertainty of our future.
As I watched Ella laugh and chat with her boyfriend on the phone, I couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. They were thousands of miles apart, yet their connection seemed stronger than ever.
Ella noticed my gaze and smiled sympathetically. "They've been apart for years, but they make it work. They talk every day, sometimes multiple times a day."
I sighed, feeling a twinge of longing. "That's what I want. I wish Denzel and I were like that."
Ella's expression turned thoughtful. "Maybe you should talk to him about how you're feeling. Communication is key in any relationship."
I nodded, knowing she was right. But a part of me was scared to confront the reality of our situation. What if Denzel didn't feel the same way? What if he wasn't willing to work on our relationship?
As I pondered my next move, Ella's words echoed in my mind – "Communication is key." Was it time to take a leap of faith and have an honest conversation with Denzel?
Ella's eyes sparkled as she showed me her phone. "Guess what? My boyfriend just invited me to spend the holidays with him! I'm so excited."
I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. Why couldn't Denzel be as thoughtful and communicative?
Ella noticed my expression and gave me a reassuring hug. "I'm sure Denzel will come around, Hikma. You just have to hold on to hope."
As Ella started making plans for her trip, I couldn't help but wonder what my future held. Would I ever get to spend holidays with Denzel? Or would we continue to be apart, stuck in limbo?
Ella's phone buzzed again, and she squealed with excitement. "He's booking my ticket! I'm going to surprise him!"
I smiled, feeling happy for her. But deep down, I couldn't shake off the feeling that my relationship was stagnant. What would it take for Denzel and me to move forward?
As Ella prepared for her trip, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. I was happy for her, but also a little envious. Why couldn't Denzel and I have a relationship like hers and her boyfriend's?
One day, I decided to take Ella's advice and have an honest conversation with Denzel. I called him, my heart racing with anticipation.
"Denzel, we need to talk," I said, trying to sound calm.
Denzel's tone was cautious. "What's wrong, Hikma?"
I took a deep breath. "I feel like we're drifting apart. You don't communicate with me like you used to. I feel like I'm losing you."
Denzel sighed. "Hikma, I'm busy. I told you, I'm trying to settle down."
I felt a surge of frustration. "Settle down? You've been saying that for months. When will we be together?"
The conversation was going nowhere. I felt tears welling up in my eyes. "Denzel, I don't know if this is working anymore."
