Chapter 31: The Child Who Chose

974 Words
The safe house had become quieter over the past few days. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that only existed when everyone inside was exhausted. Outside, the waves rolled gently onto the beach, washing away footprints almost as quickly as they appeared. The salty breeze drifted through the cracked bedroom window, carrying the scent of the ocean into the small house. Normally, Zella loved the sound of the water. Tonight it only reminded her how far from home they really were. She glanced at the clock on the nightstand. 3:18 a.m. Again. Another sleepless night. She hadn't bothered trying to force herself back to bed. Every time she closed her eyes she saw flashing police lights, courtroom benches, frightened little girls, and faces she desperately wanted to forget. Witness protection kept changing addresses. Changing names. Changing routines. But it couldn't erase memories. Across the room, Micah slept peacefully in the portable crib. His tiny chest rose and fell in slow, steady breaths, his favorite stuffed puppy tucked beneath one arm. Every now and then he smiled in his sleep. It made Zella smile too. At least one child still dreamed peacefully. The little boy in her arms was another story entirely. Malaki hadn't cried. He hadn't fussed. He simply... Stayed awake. His bright blue eyes wandered around the room, pausing at the doorway, then the ceiling, then the window, as though he could see something no one else could. It was unsettling. Not because she was afraid of him. Because she couldn't shake the feeling that he wasn't looking at the room. He was looking through it. She adjusted the blanket around his tiny shoulders and gently rocked him. "You really don't sleep much, do you?" she whispered. Malaki turned toward her. His little hand wrapped around her finger. His grip was surprisingly strong. "You've been watching ever since you got here." She laughed softly to herself. "Most babies your age would be asleep." He blinked. Slowly. Almost thoughtfully. Zella studied his face. So small. So innocent. Yet somehow carrying a weight no baby should ever carry. She remembered the moment he'd appeared. No warning. No explanation. One second her arms had been empty. The next— He was there. Safe. Calm. Looking up at her as though he'd always known who she was. "You picked me," she whispered. The words hung quietly in the room. "Out of everyone..." She brushed a thumb gently across his cheek. "...you picked me." She still couldn't understand it. There were thousands of people. Hundreds of places. Endless points in time. Why her? Outside, the wind picked up. Palm trees rustled. The ocean answered with another slow wave. Then... Something changed. Not outside. Inside. The room suddenly felt heavier. Not cold. Not warm. Heavy. Like invisible eyes had quietly entered the room. Zella stopped rocking. The silence deepened. A strange pressure settled over her shoulders. It wasn't fear. It wasn't danger. It was awareness. As if the room itself had taken a deep breath. Malaki turned his head toward the hallway. Watching. Waiting. "...You see it," she whispered. The baby never looked away. A floorboard creaked. Zella looked toward the doorway. Zara stood there in oversized pajamas, rubbing sleep from one eye. She hadn't said anything. She simply stared at Malaki. After several moments she quietly spoke. "That baby's not normal." There wasn't fear in her voice. Only certainty. Zella let out a tired sigh. "No." She didn't even try to deny it anymore. "...No." Another shadow appeared beside Zara. Zabrina. Unlike her sister, she wasn't watching the room. She was watching Malaki. Her brow furrowed as if she were listening to something only she could hear. Finally she spoke. "He's waiting." Zella frowned. "For what?" Zabrina slowly shook her head. "I don't know." She took another small step into the room. "But he's waiting." Silence settled over all four of them. Only the waves continued their endless rhythm outside. Zella looked back down at the little boy resting against her chest. He wasn't asleep. He was still watching. Always watching. Always aware. It suddenly struck her how strange the past weeks had been. Malaki had never acted frightened. Never seemed confused. Never cried when they moved from one safe house to another. Almost as though... He already knew where they were supposed to go. A lump formed in her throat. She realized something she'd been avoiding since the day he'd appeared. This wasn't forever. It was never supposed to be. She held him a little tighter. A tear slipped down her cheek. "You aren't mine." The words broke her heart the moment she said them. Zara looked down. Zabrina remained silent. Neither interrupted. Neither needed to. Zella kissed the top of his tiny head. "You never were." She smiled through her tears. "You belong to someone." Images flooded her mind. A woman she'd only met briefly. Strong. Protective. Determined. A mother who would tear apart time itself to find her child. Then the name came. Softly. Almost like someone had whispered it into her ear. "Kali." Everything suddenly made sense. Why Malaki had appeared. Why he'd trusted her. Why she'd been chosen. Not to keep him. To protect him. Until he could be returned to the woman who had never stopped searching. Zella gently cradled him against her shoulder. "I promise," she whispered. "I'll find your mom." Another tear escaped. "I'll get you home." Malaki looked up at her. For the first time all night... He smiled. Not the random smile of a baby. A peaceful one. A knowing one. As though somewhere deep inside... He already knew she'd keep that promise. Outside, dawn slowly painted the sky shades of gold and pink. A new day had begun. And with it— A new purpose. Zella wasn't just hiding anymore. She was carrying someone else's miracle home.
