Chapter 30: The Space Between

224 Words
The house had found a rhythm. Not a perfect one. Not an easy one. But a rhythm. Mica stirred in his bassinet beside the couch, soft sounds filling the quiet room as Kali adjusted the blanket around him without fully waking. Two months. Two months of late nights, early mornings, and learning how to function on almost no sleep. Two months of holding one child— And missing another. Kali leaned back into the couch, her eyes drifting shut for just a second. She could feel him. Not clearly. Not strongly. But enough. Malaki was alive. Somewhere. Her chest tightened. “I’ll find you,” she whispered. Mica shifted again, letting out a small cry. Kali was up instantly, lifting him into her arms, rocking gently as she paced. “You’re okay… I’ve got you…” Her voice caught slightly. Because she didn’t have both of them. Something shifted. Kali froze. Not fear. Not danger. Presence. She turned slowly toward the hallway. Nothing there. But the feeling didn’t leave. “…Hello?” she whispered. Silence answered her. But it wasn’t empty. Kali frowned, hugging Mica a little closer. “You’re just tired…” But even she didn’t believe that. 🔚 Final Beat Across time— Zella held Malaki close. And just for a second— The air beside Kali shimmered. Unseen. Uncounted Still there.
