The Devil's Deal

The luxury sedan glided smoothly and silently through the neon-lit, rain-slicked streets of Northwood City. Inside the spacious cabin, the silence was incredibly heavy, almost suffocating. It was broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the powerful engine and the quiet, erratic sound of Clara’s uneven breathing. The plush leather seat beneath her was comfortable, a stark contrast to the unforgiving concrete she had spent weeks on, yet she couldn't bring herself to relax. Clara kept her thin hands tightly intertwined in her lap, her knuckles turning white from the tension. Her mind was spinning out of control. Just a mere hour ago, she was starving in a pitch-black, filthy cage, counting down her final moments and waiting for death to claim her. Now, she was sitting mere inches away from the most powerful, enigmatic, and deeply feared man in the entire city. It felt like a bizarre, twisted dream. "Drink this." Adrian’s cold, authoritative voice cut through the fog of her chaotic thoughts. Before she could even flinch, the smooth, warm surface of a crystal glass was gently brushed against her trembling knuckles. Clara hesitated, her blind, clouded blue eyes darting nervously toward the direction of the sound, her instincts screaming at her to be cautious. "It's just water, Clara," Adrian said, a hint of an amused, dark undertone coloring his otherwise flat voice. "If I wanted to poison you, I wouldn't have spent thousands of dollars tracking your hidden location tonight. It would be a terrible waste of resources." Realizing how utterly pathetic and paranoid she must look to him, Clara swallowed her pride. She took the glass with both of her shaking hands, raising it to her lips, and took a desperate, messy gulp. The cool, refreshing liquid soothed her parched, burning throat instantly, bringing her back to life. "How... how did you know where I was?" she asked softly, her voice still carrying a raspy edge as she carefully set the glass down in the car's cup holder. "Nothing happens in this city without my explicit knowledge," Adrian replied smoothly, his intense gaze fixed entirely on the dark, wet road ahead. "Especially when it involves the desperate movements of Eleanor Mercer. Your dear stepmother has been frantically trying to forge your late father's signature to sell off a prime piece of land that legally belongs to you. A piece of land that my empire absolutely needs to secure." Clara’s heart clenched violently with a wave of raw, unfiltered hatred. Eleanor and Olivia had not only stolen her sight and brutally crushed her passion for the piano, but they were also actively tearing down her beloved father’s legacy, piece by piece. "They took everything from me," she whispered, her voice shaking violently as tears threatened to spill from her unseeing eyes. "My eyes... my music... my entire life. They left me with nothing." "Then take it back," Adrian said, his tone dropping into a low, commanding register that echoed with absolute certainty. "Force them to give it back." The car suddenly came to a smooth halt. Clara heard the sharp click of Adrian’s seatbelt releasing beside her. A brief moment later, the passenger door was pulled open, and the crisp, cold night air rushed in, kissing her cheeks. Before she could panic or disorient herself, Adrian’s powerful arms wrapped around her fragile frame once more, lifting her deadweight body effortlessly as if she weighed nothing at all. As he carried her, Clara’s hyper-sensitive ears caught the sound of heavy glass security doors sliding open, followed by the echoing resonance of their footsteps crossing what felt like a massive, grand entrance hall. The air inside this new space smelled intensely of expensive marble polish and the delicate, fresh scent of white lilies. "Welcome to the Vance Manor," Adrian whispered near her ear, his deep, resonant voice sending a strange, unexpected wave of warmth through her shivering skin. He moved down a long hallway and placed her down gently, not on a cold, rough floor, but onto a cloud-soft, massive mattress. Clara immediately reached her hands out, feeling the incredibly smooth silk sheets beneath her fingertips. For a second, she felt safe, a feeling she had forgotten existed. "Master Adrian, the private physician is already waiting in the study," a polite, elderly voice spoke from a respectful distance near the door. "Bring him up immediately, Dr. Ross," Adrian ordered calmly. He then stepped closer to the edge of the bed. Clara could instantly feel his massive, highly intimidating presence towering over her like a dark shadow. "The doctor will thoroughly examine your eyes tonight. Tomorrow morning, the formal contract will be ready for you to sign." Clara swallowed hard, forcing herself to look up into the absolute darkness where she imagined his piercing eyes to be. A sudden fear gripped her chest. "And if... if the doctor says my eyes can never be cured? What if I'm broken forever? Will you throw me back into that warehouse to rot?" The room went entirely still. Adrian slowly leaned down over the bed, his large, leather-gloved hand catching her chin in a firm grip, forcing her face up toward his. His thumb brushed over her dry bottom lip with a dangerous, agonizingly slow possessiveness that made her breath hitch instantly. "I don't make bad investments, Clara," Adrian whispered, his dark eyes locked onto her pale, breathtakingly beautiful face. "Even without your sight, your family name alone carries the immense legal power I need to destroy Eleanor's ambitions. But don't worry... I always get what I want. And right now, I want your eyes wide open when we finally destroy them." He slowly released her chin, his heavy, rhythmic footsteps fading away as he walked out of the room, leaving Clara completely alone in the grand, silent bedroom. For the first time in three agonizing weeks, Clara didn't feel like a helpless, shivering victim. She pulled the heavy silk blanket tightly around herself, a cold, dark smile finally touching her lips. Adrian Vance was a dangerous, ruthless monster—there was no doubting that. But as she lay in his bed, she realized something crucial. He was her monster now. And together, they were going to make the Mercer family pay for everything they did.
