Getting the job there was quite a difficulty since it was widely popular. I needed to have qualifications and experiences. However, I went through it all when the CEO, Marcus Le Doux, offered me an internship for six months.   As soon as the paid internship was over, the company offered me the position of HR assistant. It paid well, and the job itself wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would.   “Charlotte,” My boss called out my name.   “Yes, Mr. Jordan?” I straightened my posture and stood in front of him.   “You were supposed to be here twenty minutes ago,” he raised an eyebrow and said.   “I am sorry, I got into traffic. Would you like me to get you a cup of coffee?” I asked.   “Yes, and freshen up, it seems like someone dragged you out of your bed.” He taunted before flickering his hand over the air above me.   “Yes,” I nodded my head and walked away.   After placing my belongings on my desk, I went to the washroom nearby and applied a bit of makeup to cover my puffed eyes. I was barely able to get any sleep ever since I woke up in the middle of the night. Over that, I hadn’t stopped crying until my mother gave me a sign by touching my hand.   Once I was done freshening up, I went to the café inside the building and got Mr. Jordan some coffee and donuts. I knew what he liked precisely.   “Here is your coffee!” I said with a smile as I placed the cup on his glass table. “You have a meeting with Mrs. Perks at 2 PM regarding the company’s recent change in employee benefits,” I added as I went through my notepad.   “Oh, yes,” he rolled his eyes and leaned back on his leather chair.   “Could I ask something, Mr. Jordan?”   “Go ahead, Charlotte.”   “Is there any way I could get a loan from the company?”   “We do offer loans, but your credit score is horrible – terrifying. Considering the risk, the company won’t be able to offer a loan to you, but you can defiantly take it up to the CEO if you’d like.” He explained.   “And do you think he will?” I asked with hesitation. My credit score was indeed bad. There was no way I could opt for a loan in my bank or any other bank. The only option I had was either to borrow from someone or get it from the company I was working in.   “I doubt but give it a try, maybe he will.” Mr. Jordan shrugged. “Why do you need it anyway? Your pay is good,” he doubted.   “Yes, there is just an emergency, and I require some money immediately.”   “Oh, well, take it up to Marcus, and he might do something. You have been a good employee here,”   “Thank you for the suggestion, Mr. Jordan.” I turned around to leave his office but stopped midway. “Oh, I will have your report ready by evening,”   “That will be good,”   –   “How has she been doing?” I quietly asked as I entered the hospital ward where my mother had been moved into.   It was nighttime, the sun had disappeared, and the moon was glowing in the darkness. According to the doctors, my mother was slightly better with the pain meds, but she needed to sleep more.   “She’s doing better like the doctor said,” my father whispered.   The lights to the room were switched off, and I just returned back from my work. My house was still untouched. Twenty fours hours had passed by, and my mother still couldn’t breathe properly. She could barely move at this point. Cancer was taking her all over again.   “How was your work?” my father asked as I sat down in the corner. We spoke quietly and avoided waking my mother up.   “It was fine, the usual,” I breathed out heavily.   “Did you speak to your boss?”   “I spoke with Mr. Jordan, and the company cannot offer me a loan due to my credit score, but there is a possibility that if I speak to Mr. Le Doux, the CEO, I might get something,” I explained.   My father handed over a box of pizza. My stomach clenched at the sight of food. I hadn’t been able to swallow down a piece of anything since morning.   “That’s good. Have you spoken to him?”   “Not yet,” I shook my head and opened the box.   Taking a cold slice of the pizza, I chewed it down and devoured it like it was the first thing I had ever eaten.   Seeing the worry on my father’s face, I said, “I will speak to him tomorrow, so don’t worry, I will arrange something.”   “You’re working way too hard, Charlotte, you need some rest.” My father said.   “It’s okay. It’s just a few days. As soon as my mother wakes up, the doctors will put her under chemotherapy, and she will heal eventually.” I replied while taking another bite of the pizza. “What about you, Dad? How are you feeling?”   “I don’t know how I am supposed to feel. It happened so quickly, Charlotte. One moment Samantha was completely fine, and the other moment, I learn that she is in the hospital once again.” My father sighed and leaned back on the wall.   “I know it will get better.” I placed my hand on his and comforted him.   At that point, I didn’t know that things were about to take a turn for the worse.   I woke up in the middle of the night with doctors and nurses scrambling inside the ward. Panic gripped from all sides as I got up from the couch.   “What’s wrong?” I asked the doctor.   “You will need to leave the room immediately,” he said.   I couldn’t glance at my mother since she was covered with nurses and other doctors. Something seemed to be terribly wrong.   “Come on, Charlotte, we have to leave.” My father said as he grabbed my shoulders.   “No, wait, what happened?” I asked as a tear flowed down my cheeks.   The heart rate monitor wasn’t beeping anymore.
