Em
I pulled up in front of the Devil Saints clubhouse. I drove all night to get here to find out what’s going on. Sara will tell me everything about why she quit school to be with a man. I would have understood if she attended school and dated this guy. But why an outlaw? Of all the men in the world, she chooses a damn biker. Ugh, where did I go wrong?
I took a deep breath, got out of my Camaro, and walked to the clubhouse. It was a little dim and crawling with women-sluts no doubt. They were all over the men grabbing them in places that made the men moan and smile.
One girl took one look at me and gave me a b***h face. She must be a club slut trying to be made into an old lady. Ha, good luck with that, she will only be used. Not one of the Saints took notice of me- which was fine- but I need to find my sister.
“Excuse me, but we don’t need any more whores coming in.” It was the same girl who gave me that mean look and realized that she’s perfect for attention. Without answering, I quickly snap my fist out and made contact with her nose. She fell to the floor holding her bloodied nose and crying. “My nose!” I couldn’t contain my smile. I think I chuckled a little, but still none of the Saints turned their heads except for one.
He stood by the bar and eyed me. He was tall and muscular, too muscular for my taste and he’s blonde. Not my type at all, but he’ll do.
He made his way towards me and I remained where I was. He had one of those smiles that says I’m his prey and I’m not going anywhere. Boy, he’s in for a surprise. He put his hand on my shoulder and I guess he was expecting a reaction because there was a questionable look on his face. I gently put my hand on his and slid my fingers down to his wrist. I wrapped my fingers around his wrist and twisted it.
“Ah!” He yelped. I punched him once in the face, then kicked him in the chest. He went flying back, hitting the bar.
The entire bar went quiet and every Saint had their eyes on me.
“Now that I have your attention. I’m looking for a woman. About my height, a red-haired beauty with green eyes and fair skin. Goes by the name of Sara.”
Everyone looked at each other until one man stepped up. He was hot. Dark hair with white skin and his dark blue eyes made him a little darker with a strong body build. He wore the Devil Saints leather cut and his patch says President. On the other side was his name, Carlo.
“Who are you?” he asked. “What do you want with Sara?” The way his voice sounded, he seemed protective of her, too protective. Even the way he looked when I mentioned her name.
“Where is Sara?” I asked.
I examined Carlo closely. His eyes narrowed at me and his fists clenched. Huh. Was he like this with the other old ladies…or just with Sara?
“Em?” I hear a woman’s voice say. From the corner of my eye, I see flaming red hair gliding my way, then I see green eyes in front of me. I should be happy to see my sister, but instead I’m mad as hell. I pushed Sara up against a wall and started to yell.
“What the hell were you thinking?!”
“I’m sorry, Em. I know I should have told you the truth, but I was afraid because I know how hard you worked to give me a good life.”
“You should have told me Sara.”
“I know,” she said tears strolling down her cheeks.
And just like that, seeing my sister cry, my anger left me. I never liked seeing her cry, it always broke me. I stepped back and tried to breathe. A man went up to Sara and wrapped his arms around her. Must be Jax. I went to the bar and sat on a stool. “Give me something hard.” Whoever was tending the bar was taking forever, so I reached over and grabbed whatever was in reach.
I took a big gulp from the bottle and tried to relax. Didn’t work. Sara came up and sat next to me, while a man remained close behind her. He was a big guy with a strong body, but he didn’t look like a biker. The bikers I’ve met were all rugged looking like the ones here, but this one was clean-shaven and nice-looking. He was a good-looking man and certainly my type. Tall, dark, and there was an air of mystery around him. No doubt a dark past that he’s trying to run from.
“So, you’re the guy that swept my sister off her feet,” I say to him.
His dark eyes met mine, there was a bit of anger in them-probably the way I shoved Sara into the wall. His brown hair looked darker in the dim lighting. His hair was trimmed and cut, but despite the angry look, I couldn’t help being struck back when our eyes met. I felt my heart thump loudly in my chest and I felt like something just happened between us. That’s not good. I never wanted to feel this way ever again.
“I am. I’m Jax,” he said in a deep voice. Even the way he talked didn’t sound like a biker. He was someone else before becoming a biker.
“So, tell me Jax, why did you let Sara quit school?” I asked, eyeing him.
“It was what she wanted,” he said. “And I supported her decision.”
“It was Princeton dumbass.”
“What?!” Carlo was listening closely and pushed Jax out of the way to look at Sara. “Sara, you were going to Princeton?”
“Yes,” she said quietly, looking away.
“For free,” I added.
“Free?” Jax asked.
“Yep. She had a full ride. Never been so proud…until now.”
There was a look of hurt in Sara’s eyes. I felt bad for what I said, but she needed to hear it. “Sara, why didn’t you tell me?” Jax asked. “That’s a big deal.”
“I know and I’m sorry, but I fell in love with you and I wanted to spend my time with you. At that time, you were all about the club and I didn’t want to be separated from you, afraid that some girl takes you from me. So, I dropped out.”
“I would have stayed with you until you graduated. Sara, you don’t give up free education.”
“I’m sorry Jax and you, Em.”
“You better be,” I muttered. “I didn’t kill people for nothing to send you to the best school. I worked really hard so you wouldn’t be in this life. I never wanted you in this life. I never wanted you to be known and wanted to protect you from those who are more dangerous than me. And now someone wants to kill you. I did a great job.”
“Em, you did an amazing job raising me. If it wasn’t for you, who knows where I would be. What big sister would become an assassin to give her little sister the best life ever? You gave me birthday parties, took me to Europe when I got all A’s my junior year of high school. You gave me the best of everything. Who would do that?”
“Me,” I breathed out. Ugh, I hate it when she’s right. That’s what I get for sending her to smart schools. But the look on my sister’s face tells me that she’s happy. I groaned inside. She’s a full-grown woman and I can’t tell her what to do anymore. I miss the old days when I bossed her around. It was easier.
But on to important matters.
“Why am I here? You have a bar full of bikers who can take care of your problem; you don’t need me.”
“Actually, they can’t,” she said.
“Come again.” I looked at Jax and Carlo. “Isn’t she your old lady, Jax? Isn’t she part of this club? Why aren’t you going to protect her?” Carlo cringed when I called Sara Jax’s old lady.
“We are,” Carlo said. “She is going to stay here with us while Jax goes and takes care of this.”
Strange. I would have thought that they would all kill this guy. I’m surprised they’re letting a biker go solo.
“Okay, and I’m here because…”
“I want you to go with him,” Sara says.
“Excuse me?” That is not a good idea.
“I don’t want Jax to go alone. I want you to tag alone. You know how to track people down. Besides, the guy who wants me dead knows who Jax is and not you. You’ll have the advantage.”
I sized Jax up. He’s bigger than me, of course, and he’s strong and looks like he knows how to fight, but I’m fast. “Yeah, I can take you,” I say. Jax snorted. “So, who’s the guy?”
Sara took a deep breath and said, “Jones. His name is Jones.”
I stared at her, my eyes wide, then out of nowhere I burst out laughing. I couldn’t help myself. I held onto my sides as I continued to laugh. Everyone gawked at me like I was crazy. I reached over and patted my sister’s face. “Oh, Sara. You’re so dead.”
Her face paled. “Why would you say that?”
“Because Jones is relentless.”
“Wait, you know Jones?” Jax asked.
“Eh, I met him once when I started out. He was cocky, but a cool guy. What did you do to make Sara a target?”
“I killed his woman when I tried to kill him.”
“That was you?” He nodded. I heard about that. Jones went on a rampage to find out who was sent to kill him and I guess he found him. “Yikes. You pissed him off.”
“Don’t you think I know that?” Jax asked, his eyes blazing with ire and…hurt? Does he feel regret about what happened? There’s pain in his eyes, but Sara doesn’t see it. If she did, she would have comforted him. Instead, her gaze was on Carlo and his gaze on her. They’re trying to be discreet, but I saw it. They’re into each other. Who knows, they may have already slept together.
“Can you go with him Em? I need someone I trust to watch his back. Please,” Sara begged. I looked at Jax. There’s more to him than meets the eye. I want to know what he did before he became a biker and his intentions for my sister. If he knows about Carlo and Sara. But I can’t be the one to pull the trigger on Jones. I can get him there and that’s all.
“Fine.”
