I stir the bubbling pasta sauce on the stovetop while jumping up and down trying my hardest to shake the nerves from my body.
“(Y/N), what are you doing?” Spencer bursts out in laughter from the doorway. “You look ridiculous!”
“Shut up!” I roll my eyes but can’t help joining him in the laughing. “I’m just so nervous.” I admit as he comes up from behind, wrapping his arms around my waist to steady me.
“There’s nothing to be nervous about, baby.” He murmurs as he nuzzles his face into the crook of my shoulder and neck. “Mmm that smells really good.”
“Seriously Spencer? Nothing to be nervous about? My parents, your mom, and the entire BAU are coming tonight.” I groan as I lean my neck back and his lips move against my sensitive skin.
“What's the worst that could happen?” Spencer asks once he breaks away for air.
I toss the chopped garlic into the skillet and imagine every possible horrible scenario in my mind. “Well, I’ve never met your mom. What if she doesn’t like me, Spence?”
“(Y/N)...no, no, no.” He turns me to face him and I’m suddenly pressed up against the cabinets. “I love you so she is going to love you.” His hands move down my sides until they’re resting at my hips and he’s only inches away.
“Yeah?” I breathe.
“Promise.” Spencer’s lips meet mine for a gentle kiss. “And I know for a fact that the rest of the team will be so excited. And of course your parents.”
I nod, trying to believe him.
“Just think of how Penelope is going to react.”
I lean against him laughing, picturing her squealing already. He pulls my face back to his and I press my hand to the side of the stove for support.
“Don’t burn yourself.” He laughs.
“Hush.” I pull my lips from his and push him away with a giggle so that I can tend to my pasta. “You’ve made your point, now leave me be so I can get this dinner perfect.”
Spencer reaches for his keys off the rack and kisses the top of my head. “I’m going to pick my mom up from the airport now.” He grabs my hand and smiles down at the ring he’d placed on my left hand just two nights ago.
“Please don’t be nervous, okay? I love you.” He hollers and then is out the door.
------------------
The table is set and I’m dressed and as ready as I’ll ever be. Spencer and his mom just arrived home. He raced up the stairs to change clothes and let me know she was waiting in the front of the apartment to meet me. I gulp while praying she’ll deem me acceptable for her amazing son.
“Diana?” I call to Spencer’s mother who is sitting alone in the living room. “It’s so nice to finally meet you.” I smile brightly, hoping to make a nice impression. I move my left hand behind my back, careful to not spoil the surprise too soon. “I’m (Y/N).”
“(Y/N).” Diana lifts herself from the chair to shake my hand. “Congratulations.” She smiles.
“Uh, I’m sorry?” I raise an eyebrow.
“The engagement.” She reaches for the hand I was hiding and runs her fingers over the beautiful diamond.
“Oh, I didn’t know you knew, sorry.” I blush and pull away. Diana sits back down and winks.
“Mother’s intuition, (Y/N).” She explains. “Spencer wouldn’t fly me all the way to Virginia for anything less.”
I nod, “I wish we could’ve met sooner, we were planning to visit over Christmas-”
“But work.” She finished for me, “I’m glad he’s with you, someone who understands how busy that job is. You’re good for him, I can tell.”
My face lights us as soon as Diana says this. I’m beyond thrilled that she approves. The knot in my stomach begins to dissipate.
“I smell pasta!” A familiar voice announces from the doorway.
“Please excuse me, Diana.” I turn to see Rossi and the rest of the team walking in.
“I hope you used the recipe I taught you.” Rossi pulls me in for a hug and pats my back.
“Of course,” I laugh. “Hey guys. I’m so glad you could make it.”
“Free food? Wouldn’t miss it.” Morgan shrugs and Garcia swats his arm. “Ah! Feisty baby girl!”
“Hotch, I didn’t think you were coming.” I smiled, really happy that he had.
“Haley’s sister agreed to watch Jack.” He explained while pulling his coat off. I take it from him and greet the girls.
“Thanks for inviting us.” Prentiss, JJ, and I hug each other.
“So where’s the pretty boy at?” Morgan asks and as if on cue, Spencer bolts down the stairs, waving to the team. “Hey guys!”
Then the doorbell rings and my parents arrive.
“Mom! Dad! Hello.” I kiss their cheeks.
After introducing everyone to everybody, we head to the kitchen.
Spencer and I stand at the front of the room while they take their seats. My heart beat begins to speed up. His hand meets the small of my waist and as if he can sense my nervousness, his fingers rub soothing circles.
“You may be wondering while you’re all here…” Spencer begins.
“Do you think they’re pregnant?” Garcia whispers into JJ’s ear just loud enough that I can barely make out.
“No.” I laugh and pat my baby free stomach, “Not pregnant.”
Spencer’s eyes widen at the idea and he coughs uncomfortably next to me. He adjusts his tie for what seems like the tenth time and I grasp his hand.
“Okay.” I look up at him, “We’re engaged!”
“No way!” Penelope squeals, just I’d imagined she would. “Ahhhhh!”
I raise my hand into the air and show off the flashy ring while they clap and whistle.
I grab my grinning fiance and we take out seats. “Okay! Well, let’s dig in!” He announces. We all clink our wine glasses together and the night begins.
-----------------
The pasta is long gone and most of us are on our second or third glasses of red wine. Everyone is full and happy. Spencer’s hand is resting on my knee and I whisper to him, “This is going great.”
“I told you there was nothing to be worried about. They’re all happy for us.” He kisses my cheek and I can’t help but blush. He was completely right.
Hotchner clears his throat from the end of the table and we all turn to him. “I just wanted to say how thrilled I am for the two of you.”
“Aw Hotch.” I put my hand over my heart and he does his half smirk when he’s truly happy but still trying his best to be the serious Hotchner we all know.
“I’ve known Spencer Reid and (Y/N) for many years now,” He continues. “You two are more than my trusted colleagues… you are my friends. I’ve had the pleasure of watching you both grow into focused and mature adults. Seeing you fall in love was a beautiful thing and I wish you a long life of love and happiness.”
My eyes well up at the sentiment. “Thank you, Hotch.” Spencer nods beside me. “Really, that means a lot.”
I agree and by now Garcia is a blubbering mess beside us.
“Garcia!” I laugh and pull her into my arms.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” She grabs a napkin to dab at her eyes and then pushes her glasses back up the slope of her nose. “I told myself no tears no matter what would happen night. I was really thinking you’d announce you were pregnant and I was so ready to let you know that I was completely up to the responsibility of being the godmother to both JJ’s and yours child. It would’ve been so cute to see the mini book worm… But I consider you all my family now and I’m just so excited you’re going to tie the knot.”
Now she’s in my arms crying again and the rest of us are laughing. “These are happy tears I promise!” She says once she pulls away.
“Haha, okay baby girl, my turn.” Morgan rubs her back and sits up straighter, clinking his glass with a knife. “I want to make a toast to my boy, Reid, and his lovely girl, (Y/N). I’ve been waiting for this to happen for a while now. Once he came to me a few weeks ago asking how he should propose, I was so excited he was finally doing it.” I glance at Spencer and he ducks his head down embarrassed. “I’m so glad you two have found each other and I hope you have an incredible life together!” He raises the red wine up. “To (Y/N) and Reid!”
“To (Y/N) and Reid!” Everyone toasts.
---------------
“Love, it’s nearly midnight, come to bed with me already.” Spencer startles me as he enters from the dark hallway. I’m in one of his button downs finishing the dishes and yawning. Emily was the last to leave, insisting on helping me clean up.
“I remember when you first told me you had feelings for Reid.” We had reminisced as we wiped down the table.
“I never just told you, Prentiss. You drilled it out of me!” I smack her with the damp rag.
“Hey!” She bent over laughing, “Still! If it weren’t for me setting the two of you up, we’d never be here now would we?”
“I guess I owe it all to you.” I shake my head, smiling.
She left about an hour ago and now I was finishing the last of the cleaning. Who knew so many grown adults could make such a mess. There was a lot of drinking involved though…
“Come on…” Spencer lifts me up into his arms and carries me up the stairs.
“Have you been working out?” I giggle once he releases me onto the bed. “That was impressive.” I remark. He kisses his muscles and I roll my eyes.
“Come here.” I lift the comforter while he strips to his boxers. He then crawls in beside me and pulls the comforter back up. I lean into his chest and inhale the cologne I’d bought for his birthday. Spencer reaches for my hand and holds it above us to admire the ring.
“I can’t wait to put the wedding ring on you.” He whispers against the top of my head. I pull away to look at him. His brown eyes are crinkled at the side because he’s smiling down at me. His short hair is perfectly tousled as he runs a hand through it.
“I can’t wait till you’re wearing a ring too.” I lift myself up and kiss him.
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you.”
