Chapter 3: The Aftermath

1894 Words
Evelyn's eyes fluttered open in the dim light of the early morning. She was still in Dominic's penthouse, lying beneath the luxurious sheets, her body tangled in the warmth of the night they had shared. For a moment, her mind was hazy, the vivid memories of their heated encounter still fresh in her mind. The feel of his hands on her, the low growl of his voice, the way he had taken control — all of it came flooding back. Yet, despite the intimacy, despite the way her body had surrendered to him, Evelyn felt nothing. At least, that's what she told herself. She carefully untangled herself from the sheets, the cold air from the window biting at her skin as she moved to gather her things. It wasn't about regret; it never had been. She had done what she needed to do. But even as she dressed, there was a part of her that couldn't quite shake the effect Dominic had on her — his presence, his commanding aura, the way his eyes had followed her with a look that felt too intense. There was something about him that dug under her skin, something she couldn't ignore. She pulled on her coat and moved to the door, making sure to leave no trace of her presence behind. But just as she reached for the handle, a voice interrupted her, low and deep. “You're leaving?” Evelyn froze. The voice belonged to Dominic, of course. She turned to face him, her gaze cool and detached, as if their night together meant nothing at all. “I'm not the kind of woman who lingers after,” she said, her voice colder than she intended, but it was the only way she could keep her emotions in check. She was getting too close to something she couldn’t afford to explore. Dominic's gaze flicked to her, but there was no anger in his eyes — only an intensity that bordered on hunger. “I thought you were different,” he said, his tone laced with curiosity. “You came here with a purpose, didn't you? So, why act like you don’t care now?” Evelyn's lips curled into a faint, controlled smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. “I don't owe you an explanation. We had our night, and now it’s over. That’s it.” But Dominic wasn't ready to let go. He stood, his towering figure blocking the door, his presence impossible to ignore. He took a slow step toward her, his gaze never leaving hers. “You’re not fooling anyone, Evelyn. I see through you.” Her heart skipped a beat. She could feel the tension in the room, thick and palpable. She had always been the one in control, always the one who held all the cards, but there was something about Dominic that made her feel like she was on the edge of losing her grip. “I'm not a fool,” she replied, trying to maintain her composure. “And neither are you. You know why I came here. You know what this was.” He stepped closer, his presence dominating the space between them. His hand reached out, brushing a lock of hair from her face, his touch electric. “I didn't expect you to make it so easy,” he murmured, his voice low, dangerous. “But I won't let you walk away so easily.” Evelyn's breath hitched, but she refused to give in. She pushed past him, her body brushing against his, the heat between them like a live wire. “We'll see about that,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Dominic watched her leave, his mind racing. She had been cold, distant, but he couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more to her. Something he hadn't figured out yet. And that, more than anything, intrigued him. The silence in the air felt deafening as Evelyn walked away from Dominic's penthouse. Her steps were brisk, purposeful, yet her heart raced in a way she hadn't expected. She told herself it was nothing more than a means to an end, a tool for breaking free from the suffocating grip of her stepfather, but there was an unfamiliar feeling creeping into her chest — something she hadn't felt in years. Her fingers grazed the side of her neck, where Dominic's lips had brushed so tenderly only hours before. She shouldn't have let herself get caught up in the sensation, shouldn't have allowed him to press all the right buttons. But he had. And now, she was left with the haunting echoes of his touch. Outside, the night air was crisp, biting. She wrapped her coat tighter around her slender frame, her mind swirling with the images of their time together. Dominic wasn't just any man. He wasn't like the ones she’d used before. There was something more dangerous, more magnetic about him. She had seen it in his eyes — the way he looked at her as if he could see through her, as if she were the last puzzle piece he needed to complete his picture. And she couldn't decide if that intrigued or terrified her. As she entered her car, she caught a glimpse of herself in the rearview mirror. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips slightly parted — a telltale sign of the desire she’d tried so hard to control. She shook her head, focusing on the road ahead, on the tasks that awaited her. She couldn’t afford to let this distraction take hold of her. But Dominic had a way of lingering in her thoughts, like a shadow she couldn't shake. The next morning, Evelyn woke to a feeling of heaviness in her chest, one that didn’t come from physical exhaustion but from something much deeper. It was as if her body was warning her about the danger she had just invited into her life. And then, of course, there was the inevitable consequence: Philip. Her phone rang again, and Evelyn sighed, glancing at the name on the screen. The cold, calculating voice on the other end made her stomach churn. “I saw you last night,” Philip said, his tone tight with barely contained rage. “With him.” Evelyn closed her eyes, the weight of the words sinking deep into her gut. She knew exactly what he was referring to. “So what if you did?” she replied, attempting to sound nonchalant, but her voice betrayed a hint of apprehension. “You’re playing with fire, Evelyn,” Philip continued, his voice low, ominous. “Don't think for a second I don’t know what you’re trying to do. You think you can escape me by using someone like Dominic?” Her heart skipped a beat. The fact that he had seen her with Dominic made her sick to her stomach. She had been careful, hadn’t she? But there was no fooling Philip. He had always been one step ahead. “You think I don't know how you manipulate people? You think Dominic is just some pawn in your little game? He’ll ruin you just as easily as you ruin everyone else.” Evelyn's grip tightened around the phone. She fought to keep her voice steady. “I don’t need you to tell me what I can or can't do, Philip.” She could almost hear the smile in his voice as he responded, “You think you’re in control, but you’re not. I'll be watching.” Her body tensed at his words. She hated how easily he could make her feel small, how his control over her had never truly loosened. Meanwhile, Dominic sat in his office, staring blankly at the stacks of paperwork in front of him. But his mind was far from the business at hand. It was on her. Evelyn. That damn woman had gotten under his skin, and it wasn’t just because of their one-night affair. No, it was more than that. He had watched her. Not just during their time together, but since she’d entered his life. She was different. Cold, calculated, yet undeniably alluring. She had used him, no doubt about it, but there was something about the way she moved, the way she spoke — there was a confidence in her that intrigued him, that kept him coming back for more. He could still feel the press of her body against his, the way she had pulled away from him afterward, as if their shared night meant nothing to her. But Dominic wasn’t one to be discarded so easily. He had his pride, and for some reason, Evelyn had ignited something in him that he couldn't ignore. He leaned back in his chair, staring out the window, his thoughts a whirlwind. He needed to know more. He needed to understand what made her tick. What drove her. And if that meant pursuing her, then so be it. Later that afternoon, Dominic found himself outside Evelyn’s apartment building. He hadn't meant to come here, not at first. But the moment his mind started to fixate on her, he couldn’t stop himself. The elevator doors opened, and he walked into the lobby, his presence commanding the space. People instinctively moved out of his way, their eyes darting toward him with a mix of fear and respect. But his gaze was fixed solely on the elevator doors, on the woman who had captivated him so thoroughly. Evelyn didn't notice him at first, standing with her back to the elevator, lost in thought. She had been making her way to the elevator when the sound of footsteps behind her made her pause. A familiar, powerful presence filled the space behind her. She turned slowly, her breath catching in her throat when she saw Dominic standing just a few feet away. His eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her feel exposed. She quickly composed herself, crossing her arms over her chest, a defensive gesture. “What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice steady but laced with an underlying tension. “I could ask you the same thing,” he replied, his tone smooth and slightly mocking. “Did you think I'd just let you walk away from last night?” Evelyn's eyes narrowed, her lips curling into a smile that was anything but friendly. “I didn't think you were the type to chase after a woman, Dominic.” “I'm not,” he said, stepping closer, his voice low. “But you… you're different. You have this… pull. And I can't quite get you out of my head.” Evelyn could feel the heat between them, the air thick with unspoken tension. She wasn't sure if she wanted to kiss him, slap him, or run. But what she did know was that she couldn't let him get too close. Not now. With a soft laugh, she pushed past him, brushing her fingers against his arm in a deliberate yet fleeting touch. “You’re wasting your time,” she murmured, not looking back. “I'm not the one you should be chasing.” Dominic watched her walk away, his eyes darkened with desire and frustration. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot. And he would find a way to make her tell him what she was hiding.
