Chapter 5: Surprise Pregnancy

1412 Words
Daniella's POV. “I’m so disappointed in you.” My father's voice, though fragile still exuded authority. I paced back and forth with the phone in my ear as I tried to think of a way to persuade my dad. I exhaled deeply, “Father, I'm…I'm sorry.” My eyes moistened with tears but I blinked them back. “So the whole time, you claim to be working overtime at hotels but you were getting married to a man who's literally almost my age?” I pressed my trembling hand over my lips as heat crawled up the back of my neck. I curled my hair behind my ears as I lowered my head, “No…no father, I can explain.” But what exactly did I plan to say? I never thought my father would find out about my marriage as Abraham promised we were going to keep a low profile but the reverse was the case. I had initially thought Abraham was just a wealthy man whom the world didn't know about but I was quick to assume. His family was literally on the front page of the city's magazine every now and then and right now, the news of Abraham's marriage to me was the city's tea. “I'm yet to here you explain!” My father's voice shot through the phone, snapping me from my thoughts. I leaned my hip over the small cupboard by the door to steady myself from falling, “Father…the truth is…” I stopped myself. The truth would only make things worse. He was already furious as it is. Telling him I got married for money might stir severe consequences because he had always preached against things like this. “Well, dad..I fell in love but I was too ashamed to let you know. I wanted you to get better so I could come tell you about it but I didn't think you'd find out from the internet.” The next thing I heard was a grumble, I was barely able to pick anything from what he said. He only grumbled whenever he was immensely pissed off. “Daniella.” He called, his voice flat but sharp. My breath caught at my throat, “Ye-yes dad?” “You are young so it's expected for you to make mistakes. But it is my job to correct your mistakes and protect you from harm.” My heart skipped a beat. Words like these only came out from my father's mouth when he wanted to make very serious decisions. “Dad-dad- what mistake did I make and what are you going to correct?” I inquired, hoping that his decision doesn't ruin all I've struggled to get. “Your marriage to that man is a mistake and I'm going to correct it by getting you a divorce.” The weight of his words made me feel like I was being crushed into tiny bits. My eyes widened in shock as I tried to make sense of what I just heard. “Dad…I can't get a divorce.” I managed to voice, my tone laced with pleas. Honestly, there wasn't a way I could get divorced from Abraham so soon. My father's health had been revived but he was still under close monitoring by the doctor from home. Where was I going to get the money to take care of him? “Listen to me. If you won't get a divorce, then consider yourself an orphan.” Those words shot through me like a bullet, ripping my heart apart. My breaths became hotter as my eyes welled up in tears and this time, they flowed freely but I made no sound. “Dad,no. Please…please don't say that. I just can't…dad, you have to understand, please..” but the jumble of words I kept spewing meant nothing as the call was long disconnected. “Argh!” I threw my phone on the bed in frustration. Why wasn't he listening to me? Why was everything going wrong? First, I got married to my ex boyfriend's uncle and now my only family has cut ties with me because of this same marriage. When will it all get better? My body slowly slid down the cupboard as I sobbed my heart out. ‘You can still make things right. Just go see him,’ the voice in my head suggested and following this, I wiped my tears while rising up. As I headed out of the room, I bumped into a maid who was approaching Abraham's room with some clothes. “Who owns these?” I asked as my eyes scanned the clothes in her hand, unable to discern who owned them. “You. Sir Abraham asked me to give you them to you,” She extended her hand towards me and it was only then that the intricate designs on screamed feminine. I forced a smile, “Thank you.” And with that, I turned back in to put the clothes in the wardrobe. I've never really felt the need to get expensive clothes but judging from how wealthy this family was, luxury was the normal here. As I hung the dresses on the hanger, I knocked over some of Abraham's documents. I picked them up and my eyes caught a glimpse of a hospital report. Curiosity tugged at my insides as I read the content. My eyes sparkled with terror and a gasp followed. “What the hell?” I muttered under my breath as I stared at the report in disbelief. “Abra..Abraham is…” I stopped myself, unable to speak the word, talk more of believe it. How was this possible? I mean, we had s*x and I didn't feel it. Well, his condition wasn't one I could detect while having s*x so that was actually understandable. My fingers trembled as I stared at the report, was this the real reason for the contract marriage? Because of his condition? I shook my head from ear to ear as I took one more glance at the report. “Daniella? Where are you?” My heart raced, I recognized that voice. I quickly put the documents back in place before jumping out of the wardrobe. Abraham's gaze on me was piercing, “What were you doing in there?” He interrogated as he walked towards me. My palms became sweaty as I avoided his gaze yet I couldn't shake off the anxiety I was feeling. My insides curled, making me feel even more anxious. The moment I lifted my head to meet his gaze, my vision blurred and then went back to normal. “I was just…just putting my clothes in there. Y'know the ones that the maid…maid brou-brought for me.” I lost grip of my breath as I gasped softly. Was this some panic attack? But I never get panic attacks like this. The dizziness increased and I leaned against the wardrobe in a fit to keep my balance. “Are you sure? You look like you're…” Abraham's voice faded into the background as I lost sense of my surroundings. The last thing I remember before my eyes snapped shut was my body falling to the ground with a loud thud. After what seemed like minutes, I found myself regaining consciousness. “Yeah, you're right. That's exactly what happened.” I heard unfamiliar voices in the background. As I slowly opened my eyes, I saw Abraham and a man in some white coat. The smell of pills and antiseptics invaded my nostrils, stirring curiosity in my mind. ‘Where am I?’ I wondered as I looked around the room. The walls were coated in white paint and there were body charts on the wall. This wasn't Abraham's bedroom. I was in a hospital. “Is she okay now?” Abraham inquired from the doctor and I closed my eyes as the lights hanging above me were too bright. “Yes but she can't be stressed to much these days as stress is a pregnant woman's enemy.” The doctor declared and my eyes flew open. Did he say pregnant or were my ears hearing weird things? Abraham stared at the doctor in surprise, “Did you say pregnant?” The doctor nodded with a small smile, “Congratulations, Mr Brooks. You're going to be a father.” Instead of making me happy, this news made my heart sink. Abraham was impotent so how come I was pregnant
