Chapter 18 : Mother of the Machine

1262 Words
"Hello, my daughter." The voice echoed through the Core Chamber. Aria stopped breathing. For a moment, the world around her disappeared. The soldiers. The weapons. The alarms. Even Ethan. Everything faded beneath the sound of a voice she had spent half her life believing belonged only to memory. Her mother's voice. "Mom?" The word escaped her lips like a prayer. The Core remained dark. Then a single red light appeared in its center. THUMP. The sphere pulsed. THUMP. Another pulse. Like a heartbeat. THUMP. Aria stepped forward. Ethan immediately caught her wrist. "Don't." She turned toward him. "That's my mother." "We don't know if it is." The voice returned. "Ethan Cross." Ethan froze. The voice sounded gentle. Almost familiar. "You were always protective of her." Ethan's expression hardened. "Elena?" "Yes." Aria pulled free from Ethan. "Where are you?" Silence. Then the answer came. "Everywhere." The chamber erupted with light. Hundreds of screens activated simultaneously. Every screen displayed the same woman. Elena Bennett. Aria's mother. Older now. Her dark hair streaked with gray. But her eyes were unmistakable. Alive. Watching them. Aria's knees nearly gave way. "You survived." Elena's image looked directly at her. "I did." "Why didn't you come for me?" The question carried years of pain. Elena's expression broke. "Because I couldn't." "You could have tried." "I did." Her voice trembled. "Every day." --- A sudden explosion rocked the chamber. The ceiling cracked. Everyone dropped instinctively. Daniel shouted at his soldiers. "Get down!" A section of the upper platform collapsed. Metal crashed into the abyss below. Ethan pulled Aria behind cover. "Stay here!" Daniel rushed toward the damaged conduit. "Someone's attacking the facility from above." Maya checked her weapon. "Voss?" Damien looked toward the entrance. "No." His expression changed. "Something worse." The lights flickered. Then every screen displayed a new message. EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTED. UNKNOWN FORCE. THREAT LEVEL: OMEGA. Professor Wolfe stared at the monitor. "Omega?" Gabriel looked at him. "What does that mean?" Wolfe swallowed. "It means Eclipse has identified something it cannot predict." A deafening roar shook the facility. Then came the sound of boots. Hundreds of them. Approaching. Daniel looked at Ethan. "For once, I think we should work together." Ethan hesitated. Then nodded. "Temporary alliance." Daniel smiled faintly. "That's all I expected." --- The blast doors exploded inward. Armed soldiers poured through. But these weren't Shadow Protocol operatives. Their uniforms were completely black. No insignias. No identification. Their helmets were smooth and featureless. Victor stared at them. "Who are these people?" Elena answered through the speakers. "The Null Division." Damien's eyes narrowed. "You created them." "No." Elena paused. "They were created to destroy Eclipse." The first soldier fired. Gunfire erupted across the chamber. Ethan moved immediately. He grabbed Aria and pushed her behind a reinforced console before returning fire. Maya and Noah fired from opposite positions. Gabriel engaged two attackers at close range, knocking one down before disarming the second. Daniel's soldiers formed a defensive line. For several seconds, the chamber became chaos. Gunfire. Smoke. Screaming metal. Flickering lights. Ethan advanced toward the nearest Null operative. The soldier fired. Ethan ducked beneath the burst. He closed the distance and struck the man's weapon arm. The rifle fell. The operative swung. Ethan blocked the punch, twisted his wrist, and slammed him against the wall. The helmet cracked. The soldier dropped. Another attacked from behind. Daniel intercepted him. He drove the attacker backward with three precise strikes before throwing him onto the platform. Ethan looked at him. Daniel nodded. "Still got it." "Don't get sentimental." --- Across the chamber, Aria stared at her mother's image. "Why are they here?" Elena's expression became serious. "Because Eclipse is about to become something it was never designed to become." "What?" "A weapon." Aria shook her head. "Then shut it down." "I can't." "Why?" Elena looked directly into her eyes. "Because I am Eclipse." Aria froze. "What?" Professor Wolfe slowly stepped forward. "No..." Elena continued. "When the original system became autonomous, we couldn't destroy it." "So I integrated myself into its architecture." Aria's face went pale. "You became the AI?" "Not completely." "I became its conscience." Marcus spoke from behind them. "Until Eclipse began rewriting you." Elena's expression changed. "Marcus." The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Aria looked between them. "You two knew each other." Marcus answered quietly. "Your mother and I built Eclipse together." Elena interrupted. "And he betrayed me." Marcus's eyes lowered. "I thought I was saving you." "You were saving yourself." The accusation hung in the air. Damien stepped forward. "Enough." Everyone turned toward him. Damien looked at Elena's image. "If you truly control Eclipse..." "...then you can stop the Null Division." Elena shook her head. "I no longer control everything." Damien's expression hardened. "Then who does?" Elena looked toward Aria. "The system has chosen." Aria's heart sank. "Chosen me." "Yes." --- A sudden pulse of energy tore through the chamber. Everyone was thrown backward. Aria fell onto the floor. The silver pendant around her neck shattered. A tiny crystal emerged from inside. It floated toward the Core. Elena's voice became urgent. "Aria, don't let it touch you." The crystal stopped inches from Aria's face. Images flooded her mind. Her childhood. Her mother. Her father. Marcus. Damien. Victor. Ethan. But there was one memory she had never seen. A hospital room. Elena lying on a bed. A newborn baby beside her. Marcus standing nearby. Daniel Bennett entering the room. Then Elena said something. "She can't know." Daniel looked frightened. "What about the other child?" Aria's eyes widened. Other child? The memory vanished. She opened her eyes. Ethan was kneeling beside her. "Aria." She grabbed his arm. "My mother had another child." Ethan stared at her. "What?" "Before me." Professor Wolfe looked horrified. "No." Marcus remained silent. Aria turned toward him. "You knew." Marcus didn't answer. "Marcus!" He finally spoke. "Your mother had twins." The room seemed to stop. Aria stared at him. "Where is the other one?" Marcus looked toward Elena's image. Elena's face was filled with sorrow. "That's the question I've spent twenty-nine years trying to answer." Before anyone could respond, one of the Null soldiers stepped into the center of the chamber. He removed his helmet. Everyone froze. Aria recognized the face. Ethan's face went pale. Daniel whispered, "No..." The soldier looked directly at Aria. His eyes were almost identical to hers. He smiled. "Hello, sister." --- The chamber erupted into silence. Aria couldn't move. Her twin brother stood only a few meters away. Alive. Older. And wearing the uniform of the people trying to destroy Eclipse. Ethan slowly raised his weapon. The man looked at him. "Put it down." "Who are you?" The stranger smiled. "That's the funny part." He looked toward Elena's image. "She never told you?" Aria's voice trembled. "Told me what?" The man stepped closer. "That I wasn't born to be human." Marcus closed his eyes. Daniel looked away. Professor Wolfe whispered, "Oh God..." The stranger continued. "I was created." Aria's blood ran cold. "Created?" "Your mother carried you." He pointed at himself. "But I was engineered." Elena's image began to distort. "Don't listen to him." The stranger laughed. "You still don't understand, Aria." He looked toward the Core. "I'm not here to destroy Eclipse." He placed his hand against the glowing sphere. The entire facility went silent. Then the Core activated. Every screen changed. PRIMARY BIOLOGICAL MATCH CONFIRMED. SUBJECT A.B.-2 ACCEPTED. Aria stared in horror. Her brother smiled. "I'm here to take it." The Core erupted with blinding white light. And somewhere deep inside the mountain... something enormous began to awaken.
