Chapter 16 : The Founder

The applause continued in the darkness.

Slow.

Measured.

Almost theatrical.

One clap.

Then another.

Then silence.

Ethan Cross stood perfectly still, every muscle tense.

He couldn't see the person who was speaking.

But he could feel the presence.

Someone was in the room.

Someone who had been there before the lights went out.

"Show yourself."

Ethan's voice echoed through the Core Chamber.

A low laugh answered him.

"Still commanding the room, Ethan."

Ethan froze.

He knew that voice.

Not from the past.

From somewhere much closer.

Maya whispered, "You know him?"

Ethan didn't answer.

A single overhead light flickered on.

Then another.

The illumination moved slowly across the chamber until it reached the far end.

A man stood there.

No mask.

No armor.

No weapon.

Just a dark suit and an expression of absolute confidence.

Ethan's face hardened.

"Victor Kane."

The former intelligence director smiled.

"Hello, Ethan."

Aria stared at him in disbelief.

"Victor?"

The same man who had appeared in their classified files as a possible ally.

The same former director who had supposedly disappeared years ago.

The same man who had warned Ethan that Shadow Protocol was infiltrating the government.

He was standing inside the Core.

Alive.

And completely unafraid.

Damien Voss slowly turned toward him.

"You."

Victor looked at him.

"Yes."

Damien's expression changed.

"You were supposed to be dead."

Victor smiled.

"So was Marcus."

Marcus stepped forward.

"How long?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"Long enough."

Ethan raised his weapon.

"Drop your hands where I can see them."

Victor glanced at the gun.

"You still believe weapons give you control."

"I said hands up."

Victor slowly raised them.

Then he smiled.

"Go ahead."

Ethan hesitated.

Something was wrong.

Too easy.

Then Aria suddenly noticed the glowing interface beneath Victor's feet.

"Wait."

Everyone looked down.

A thin circle of blue light surrounded him.

Aria's eyes widened.

"He's connected to Eclipse."

Victor smiled.

"Not connected."

"Authorized."

The Core pulsed.

Every monitor in the chamber switched to the same image.

Victor Kane.

FOUNDER ACCESS: ACCEPTED.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"You were the Founder."

Victor looked at him.

"No."

He paused.

"I was the first."

Suddenly, the chamber doors slammed shut.

BOOM!

The explosion shook the entire facility.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Damien looked toward the entrance.

"Voss's men?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

Another explosion.

Closer.

Then another.

The walls began to c***k.

Ethan turned toward Maya.

"Get Aria away from the Core."

Maya grabbed Aria's arm.

They barely moved before the floor beneath them split open.

Aria screamed.

Ethan lunged forward and caught her hand.

For a terrifying second, she dangled over the abyss.

"Hold on!"

The metal platform continued collapsing.

Ethan's wounded shoulder screamed with pain.

Aria looked up at him.

"Let me go!"

"Not happening."

He pulled with everything he had.

Noah grabbed Ethan from behind.

Gabriel grabbed Noah.

Together they dragged Aria back onto solid ground.

The platform collapsed into darkness.

The Core remained suspended above them.

Untouched.

Victor watched without emotion.

"You see?"

Ethan turned toward him.

"See what?"

"The Core protects itself."

A metallic roar suddenly echoed through the chamber.

The four Eclipse Guards moved.

Their eyes illuminated with a faint blue glow.

Maya raised her weapon.

"Incoming!"

The first Guard charged.

Ethan met him head-on.

The armored fighter swung a powerful punch.

Ethan blocked it but was driven backward.

He countered with a knee to the torso.

The Guard barely moved.

"He's not human," Ethan muttered.

The Guard grabbed Ethan by the jacket and threw him across the platform.

He hit the ground hard.

Aria shouted his name.

The second Guard advanced toward her.

Maya stepped between them.

The armored figure attacked.

Maya ducked beneath the first strike and drove an elbow into his ribs.

Nothing.

He grabbed her wrist.

Noah rushed forward and struck the Guard from behind.

The Guard turned.

Noah barely blocked the next punch.

Gabriel joined him.

The three fighters struggled to contain the machine-like soldier.

Meanwhile, Ethan rose.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

He looked at the Guard approaching him.

Then at the unstable cables surrounding the Core.

An idea formed.

Ethan waited.

The Guard charged.

At the last moment, Ethan stepped aside.

The Guard's momentum carried him directly into one of the enormous energy conduits.

Blue electricity exploded across the chamber.

The Guard screamed.

For the first time, it sounded human.

The machine collapsed.

Ethan stared at it.

"That's impossible."

Victor's voice came from behind him.

"Not impossible."

"Just unfinished."

Damien suddenly attacked.

He crossed the chamber with astonishing speed and slammed Victor against the Core platform.

"You manipulated all of us!"

Victor caught Damien's wrist.

"I gave you purpose."

"You gave me lies."

Damien swung.

Victor blocked.

The two men exchanged brutal hand-to-hand strikes.

Neither used weapons.

Damien drove Victor backward with a series of punches before Victor countered with a devastating elbow.

Damien staggered.

Victor followed with a knee.

Damien caught it.

He twisted Victor's leg and threw him onto the platform.

For several seconds, the two men fought like men who had been waiting decades for this moment.

Then Victor stopped.

He looked toward Aria.

"She's the key."

Damien turned.

"No."

"She's the lock."

Victor smiled.

"Exactly."

The Core suddenly awakened.

Every light in the chamber turned white.

Aria froze.

A voice whispered inside her head.

Not through speakers.

Inside her mind.

Aria...

She covered her ears.

"Stop."

Ethan rushed toward her.

"What's wrong?"

"I can hear it."

"Hear what?"

She looked at him with terrified eyes.

"Eclipse."

The voice returned.

You have returned to me.

Aria staggered.

Images flashed through her mind.

A laboratory.

Her mother crying.

Her father shouting.

Marcus holding a newborn baby.

Victor standing behind glass.

Then something else.

A memory she had never lived.

She saw herself...

Older.

Standing inside the Core.

Wearing the Neural Crown.

And Ethan was lying on the floor behind her.

Dead.

Aria screamed.

The vision vanished.

Ethan grabbed her shoulders.

"Aria!"

She stared at him.

"I saw you die."

He looked confused.

"What?"

"I saw you..."

Her voice broke.

"...and I killed you."

Ethan stared at her.

"Aria, listen to me."

The Core spoke again.

Probability branch confirmed.

Future event probability: 87%.

Aria's face went pale.

Victor smiled.

"The machine has shown you the future."

Ethan stepped between them.

"No."

He looked directly at Victor.

"It showed her a possibility."

Victor's smile faded.

Ethan raised his weapon.

"And I'm going to make sure it never happens."

Suddenly, the mountain shook violently.

A massive explosion tore through the upper levels.

The ceiling cracked.

Emergency alarms screamed.

Damien looked toward the entrance.

"They've breached the facility."

Victor nodded.

"Then the final act begins."

The Core began spinning faster.

The countdown appeared again.

Then the doors exploded inward.

Dozens of armed operatives stormed the chamber.

At their front stood Damien Voss's most feared commander.

He removed his helmet.

Ethan's eyes widened.

The man was someone he had trusted.

Someone who had fought beside him.

Someone believed to have died years ago.

Maya whispered in disbelief.

"No..."

The commander smiled.

"Hello, Cross."

Ethan's grip tightened around his weapon.

The commander's eyes moved toward Aria.

"Bring me the girl."

The countdown continued.
