Chapter Five: Hunter and Hunted
The roar of helicopter rotors shook the abandoned clinic.
Powerful searchlights swept across the cracked walls, turning broken windows into flashes of white. Outside, black-clad operatives surrounded the building with military precision.
"They've sealed every exit," Maya whispered, watching through a shattered window.
Ethan tightened the bandage around his wounded shoulder. The bullet had passed through cleanly, but the pain was relentless. He ignored it.
"How long before they breach?"
Maya checked a handheld scanner.
"Less than two minutes."
Aria looked from Ethan to the encrypted flash drive still clutched in her hand.
"They're not just after the files anymore."
Ethan nodded.
"They're after you."
A deafening explosion ripped through the front entrance.
Dust filled the hallway.
"They're inside," Maya said.
Ethan pulled a compact smoke grenade from his vest.
"When the smoke fills the room, head for the basement. There's an old storm tunnel beneath this building."
"You know this place?" Aria asked.
"I've used it before."
The second explosion blew the reception area apart.
Black-armored soldiers poured into the clinic.
Without hesitation, Ethan tossed the smoke grenade.
The room vanished into a cloud of gray.
Gunfire erupted from every direction.
Ethan fired only when he had a clear target.
Two enemies fell.
Another charged through the smoke with a combat knife.
Ethan sidestepped, grabbed the attacker's wrist, and disarmed him before knocking him unconscious with a precise strike.
"Maya!"
"I'm covering you!"
Her rifle cracked through the chaos, forcing the remaining attackers to dive behind cover.
Ethan grabbed Aria's hand.
"Run!"
---
They descended a narrow staircase into the forgotten basement.
The tunnel beneath the clinic was damp, dark, and lined with rusted pipes.
Behind them came the echo of boots.
"They're following us," Aria said.
"They won't stop."
The tunnel split into two paths.
Ethan paused for only a second.
"Left."
They sprinted through ankle-deep water until a faint light appeared ahead.
As they emerged, they found themselves inside an abandoned subway station that had been closed for decades.
Old train tracks stretched into darkness.
Broken signs hung from the ceiling.
It was silent.
Too silent.
Ethan raised his hand.
"Wait."
A metallic click echoed beneath Maya's boot.
She froze.
"Mine."
Everyone stood perfectly still.
Maya slowly looked down.
Half-buried beneath the dirt was a pressure-activated explosive.
One wrong move would destroy the entire tunnel.
Ethan carefully crouched.
"I'll disarm it."
Aria knelt beside him.
"I can help."
He glanced at her.
"You've done explosives?"
"No."
"But I understand electronic triggers."
Working together, they exposed the device.
It wasn't military.
It was custom-built.
Sophisticated.
Aria frowned.
"This isn't designed to kill one person."
"What is it designed for?"
She swallowed.
"It would collapse the tunnel."
Meaning someone wanted to bury them alive.
After a tense minute, the light on the explosive changed from red to green.
Ethan exhaled.
"We're clear."
Before they could move again, applause echoed through the station.
Slow.
Mocking.
A lone man stepped from the shadows.
Perfectly dressed despite the abandoned surroundings.
Silver hair.
Cold blue eyes.
An expensive black suit.
He smiled as though greeting old friends.
"Impressive."
Ethan immediately raised his weapon.
"Who are you?"
The stranger ignored the question.
Instead, he looked directly at Aria.
"So... you're the woman everyone is willing to die for."
Aria felt a chill run through her body.
"I don't know you."
"No," he replied calmly.
"But I know everything about you."
He reached into his pocket and tossed a photograph onto the ground.
It landed at Aria's feet.
She picked it up.
Her breath caught.
The picture showed her as a little girl... standing beside her parents.
But there was someone else in the photograph.
A man whose face had been torn away.
On the back, written in faded ink, were six chilling words:
He was never your real father.
Aria looked up in disbelief.
"What does this mean?"
The stranger smiled again.
"It means your life has been a lie."
Before Ethan could stop him, smoke bombs exploded across the station.
The stranger vanished into the darkness.
When the smoke cleared, he was gone.
Only the photograph remained.
Ethan picked it up and studied it carefully.
There was something strangely familiar about the missing face.
Somewhere, years ago, he had seen it before.
He just couldn't remember where.
Far above the abandoned station, hidden inside a helicopter circling the city, Damien Voss watched the encounter through a surveillance feed.
"They've taken the bait," he said quietly.
His aide nodded.
"Should we eliminate them now?"
Voss shook his head.
"No."
He watched Aria's image on the monitor with unusual interest.
"The truth will destroy them far more effectively than bullets ever could."
The helicopter disappeared into the storm clouds.
Below, Ethan, Aria, and Maya stepped deeper into the darkness, unaware that the greatest secret of Shadow Protocol was no longer hidden in a file.
