Chapter Eight: The Black Vault

719 Words
A cold wind swept through the bunker as Ethan, Aria, Maya, and Noah slipped out through an emergency tunnel before the mysterious hunters could close in. For nearly an hour, they traveled through a maze of forgotten underground passages until they emerged in a dense forest on the outskirts of the city. The sun was beginning to rise. For the first time in days, the world looked peaceful. But none of them felt safe. Noah led them to an old four-wheel-drive vehicle hidden beneath camouflage netting. "It still works," he said with a faint smile. Maya climbed into the driver's seat. "Where are we headed?" Noah glanced at Ethan before answering. "Black Vault." Ethan frowned. "I thought it was destroyed years ago." "So did everyone else." --- Two hours later, they reached the edge of an abandoned military research facility hidden deep within the forest. Nature had reclaimed much of the compound. Ivy covered the concrete buildings, and rusted security towers leaned at odd angles. Yet one thing stood out. The front gate was open. "They're expecting us," Maya whispered. Ethan nodded. "No one relaxes. Stay alert." The group entered cautiously. The silence was unsettling. No guards. No alarms. No movement. Inside the main building, they found rows of abandoned laboratories filled with broken computers and shattered glass. Aria stopped at a wall covered in faded photographs. One picture caught her attention. It showed several scientists standing beside a little girl. Her heart skipped a beat. The child looked exactly like her. "No..." She stepped closer. Written beneath the photograph were the words: Project Genesis – Subject A.B. Aria's hands trembled. "This... this isn't possible." Noah looked away. "I'm sorry." "You knew?" "I suspected." Before Aria could demand answers, the sound of footsteps echoed from the corridor. Everyone turned. An elderly man wearing a torn white lab coat emerged from the shadows. His gray beard was unkempt, but his eyes were sharp. He raised both hands. "I'm unarmed." Ethan remained cautious. "Who are you?" "My name is Professor Adrian Wolfe." His gaze settled on Aria. "I've been waiting twenty-nine years to meet you." Aria's voice was barely audible. "Do you know who I am?" The professor nodded slowly. "I helped save your life." He led them into a hidden laboratory beneath the facility. Unlike the rest of the compound, the room still had power. Dust-covered monitors flickered to life. The professor activated a projector. An old video began to play. The footage showed a younger Adrian Wolfe standing beside two scientists. One of them was Aria's mother. The other was the man whose face had been torn from the old family photograph. Professor Wolfe paused the video. "His name was Daniel Bennett." Aria stared at the screen. "My father?" "Your biological father." "He wasn't a criminal," Wolfe continued. "He was the lead scientist who discovered that Shadow Protocol intended to use advanced biometric technology to control global defense systems. When he tried to expose the project, they marked him for elimination." "What happened to him?" Ethan asked. "He escaped with your mother... and with you." The professor lowered his head. "They never made it far." Silence settled over the room. Aria fought back tears. "So... they're dead." Professor Wolfe nodded sadly. "But before they died, they made sure you disappeared." He handed Aria a small silver pendant. "This belonged to your mother." She opened it. Inside was a tiny photograph of her parents smiling as they held her as an infant. For the first time since this nightmare began, Aria finally understood that her parents had sacrificed everything to protect her. Suddenly— BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... Every computer in the laboratory flashed red. Maya rushed to the security monitor. "We've got movement!" Dozens of heat signatures appeared around the facility. "They've surrounded the compound." Ethan looked at the screen. "There are too many." Noah's expression hardened. "They knew we'd come." Then another signal appeared. One vehicle. Traveling alone. Approaching the main entrance. When the image sharpened, everyone froze. The driver stepped out wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. Damien Voss. He wasn't hiding behind soldiers this time. He had come himself. Outside, Voss looked toward the laboratory and smiled. Then, through a loudspeaker, his calm voice echoed across the silent compound. "Dr. Aria Bennett..." "It's time to come home."
