‘‘Without you, it won‘t be the same.’’
Melissa‘s voice turned in to a whisper, she tried to hold her tears, but they found their way. She curled up on Vitalij‘s lap and fell asleep as the drug effect started to wear off. Vitalij stared at his reflection on the screen. He thought about getting married and having kids, it would be a dream come true, but not now. He needed to get out of business, stop selling drugs. Vitalij giggled at Melissa‘s snoring and carefully, trying not to disturb her, picked her up and went to bed. He could feel her body‘ temperature rapidly drop.
‘‘Not now.’’
Vitalij turned Melissa around and saw her lying wide-eyed. Her pupils were tiny, staring at the ceiling. Her skin became even paler, she couldn‘t stop licking her lips. The way she looked at Vitalij, scared him. It wasn‘t Melissa anymore, it was the need for h****n taking control of her body. Suddenly, she grabbed Vitalij‘s hand and sunk her nails into his flesh. Vitalij screamed in agony, trying to get her off of him, but she sunk her nails deeper. Her knuckled turned white from the pressure.
‘‘Give me some.’’
Melissa‘s eyes were staring back at him filled with hunger. Weed had helped her a bit, taking the mind off her cravings. Melissa released her grip and smacked herself in the face. ‘‘I need it! I‘m gonna die! You want me to die!’’ She screamed at the top of her lungs, scratching her face. Melissa‘s nails were bloody from the fresh cuts. Vitalij pinned her down to the bed, but surprisingly she was stronger than him. She wiggled from under him and jumped off the bed.
‘‘Melissa, listen to me.’’
Vitalij put his hands in front of him, just in case she would decide to attack him again. ‘‘I know it‘s hard. I went through this, I can help you.’’
Melissa stared him dead in the eyes, a smirk on her face.
‘‘I don‘t need help. I need it. Get it. Or I‘ll kill myself.’’
Melissa rushed to the kitchen and grabbed the knife from the drawer. She pressed it to her neck and came closer to Vitalij. ‘‘You don‘t want me to die, do you?’’ Vitalij got a cold flash, his body broke out in a cold sweat, making him shiver. He was afraid of what she can do to herself. He couldn‘t risk her life.
‘‘I‘ll get it. Just let me make a call, okay?’’
Vitalij grabbed his phone from the cupboard. He pressed the fast dial number, not taking his eyes off Melissa.
‘‘Hey, man. Can I pop in to get some?’’ Melissa put a knife back in the drawer and came closer to Vitalij, trying to hear the conversation. ‘‘Yeah, I‘m good. Yeah. It‘s for Mel.’’ Vitalij saw Melissa smiling, she was back to her usual self.
‘‘Great. Will be in a few hours. Thanks.’’
Vitalij put the phone away and wiped off the sweat from his forehead.
Melissa pressed her body to Vitalij‘s, wrapping her hands around his waist. She pressed her soft lips to his neck, licking off the sweat drops. He let out a relieved sigh and fell on the bed, feeling Melissa‘s heartbeat. It was hard to see her suffer, withdrawals weren‘t a common problem. Vitalij made sure his supplies were always full. He tried to send her to rehab, but he wouldn‘t survive a day without her by his side. He was sure he would take better care of her than anyone else.
They fell asleep holding each other. Vitalij was the first one to wake up. He rubbed his eyes and kissed Melissa‘s forehead. He checked the time on his phone and understood he needed to go now. Vitalij carefully left the bed and got dressed. He picked the backpack from the floor and kissed Melissa‘s forehead lightly before quietly left the room.
The sound of an incoming message welcomed him back to reality, a reminder of an important meeting. With a shaking hand, Vitalij took out the phone. The message was from his good friend, giving Vitalij the location of the place they should meet. His package was ready to be picked, he couldn‘t be late. Vitalij rushed down the stairs, almost knocking over an older lady who was climbing up.
Ignoring her shouting, he put his hood on, covering his face. As he left the red building, fresh night air welcomed him by blowing the smell of weed straight into his nostrils. The wind softly caressed his face. Vitalij closed his eyes and took in the unique scent. He didn‘t need to see the package to know it was a lemon-flavored one. But there was no time in stopping, there were places to go. Vitalij crossed the road, nodding to his neighbors. He quickened his pace, it became hard to breathe, but he didn‘t stop. He felt his legs getting tired and. Vitalij wasn‘t in the best shape for a long time.
‘‘Evening, lovely.’’
A familiar voice caught Vitalij‘s attention. There she was. A tall, dark-skinned girl with short black hair. She leaned against a lamp post and winked at Vitalij. Her shirt was slightly unbuttoned, he could see the shape of her bare breasts.
‘‘My eyes are up here, dork.’’ Her laugh pierced the night.
Vitalij licked his dry lips, eating her up with his gaze, but the image of Melissa made him push down his emotions. He knew her. He‘d seen her few times stopping cars in the middle of the road. She was a drug addict and preferred h****n more than anything. Vitalij remembered the day he met her. Linda was new to the streets, she‘d hidden her body under clothes but look at her now. Standing strong and tall, trapping men like flies. Linda noticed Vitalij‘s gaze but just laughed it off.
