They had a group dinner that night.
It was the pack’s tradition to dine together once every month so as to create a bond between the pack members.
Elise had been sighing since evening came after learning that the joined dinner was that night.
She hasn’t even gotten over the wolf or no wolf allegations, she had to dine with everyone seated on a table.
It would be extremely awkward.
If she could, she wouldn’t join, but it was a compulsory pack ritual.
Now, she’d be the one to ruin the night for everyone.
She felt guilty….
Not only was she not a member of the pack, she was a burden.
More of a burden than any of the pack members.
She couldn’t wrap her head around how fast it all blew up like a time bomb.
Her getting here and her stay here all went so fast.
She sighed again, not wanting to drown fully in self pity.
She dressed up and headed to the dining room.
She expected that they’d all be laughing and the place would be filled with laughter and spoons clicking together with the ceramic plates,
But she’d go in and the noise would die down and everyone would eat their food in a rush while tip toeing out quickly like they were rats who’d been caught by a giant cat.
But when she got there, the silence welcomed her.
The dining room was quiet; too quiet Infact.
Everyone seemed to carry their weight into their mouths as rice.
Not many people looked up when she entered.
Their eyes were fixed on their plates like there was a movie or game attached to it.
Elise took a seat while searching the room for Kai who was seated with Lucien while stabbing his fork into his plates looking dejected.
Everyone must be overwhelmed with all the drama going on.
Selfish of her to think she was alone in all these, Elise thought to herself.
Selfish or not, the thought that she wasn’t alone made her feel better and less out of place.
Maybe she really did need her burden to be shared.
Before this, each month she had spent in the packhouse, she had always taken in the ambiance of the dining room before going to eat.
This time, the only ambiance she was taking in was Kai’s.
Despite all the roller coasters of emotions and events, she still always thought about him every single night before bed.
Not that she only thought about him at night, but the thought of him grew stronger each night before bed.
It was said that you’re in love with the one person you think about before bed and that they’re probably thinking about you too.
She wondered if this was true.
Everyone had quickly and left the dining room.
Kai had excused himself saying he needed air and Elise had watched him leave while contemplating on following him or not.
She chose the latter.
He probably needed a fresh air.
She’d be contaminating it if she tagged along.
Elise barely ate.
She took two bites of the steak and drank a little bit of non- alcoholic wine.
She wasn’t hungry.
She couldn’t bring herself not to follow Kai.
She dropped her cutlery and went to find him.
Outside, the moon was bright, it was close to a full moon.
Must be why the silence was loud in the hall.
Elise spotted Kai seated under a big tree.
He didn’t turn when he heard her footsteps, but he spoke.
“I was hoping you’d come.”
She stopped beside him, without answering and sat.
Then she looked up at him,
“I was hoping you’d want me to come”. She said, looking him directly in the eye.
This was the first time in a while thatshe directly looked at Kai in the eye.
All these while, she always glanced at his hair, his forehead, the ground, and other places that wouldn't make her feel awkward.
He wasn’t the best at making a girl feel less awkward though.
Even amidst serious conversations, she still could not help but admire him before setting her mind to listen.
Kai didn’t say anything, he just looked up in the sky and sighed, trying to hide his blush.
His cheeks was turning red and Elise must have noticed it because her cheeks turned red too.
Kai thought, clearing his throat loudly to stop his cheeks from getting even more red.
“It’s past bedtime alpha, madam Rose told me to check up on you as she was worried when she couldn’t find you anywhere near your room or office” Tiana, a maid in the pack kitchen said, breaking the silence.
“I’m sorry to disturb your conversation ma’am,” she said to Elise, bowing a little while trying to hide her shaky hands at the back to her dress.
“It’s fine, tell madam Rose I’m okay, so she needn’t worry about me.” Kai said, offering a little smile to the timid maid.
Elise also did the same.
She didn’t want to make it obvious that she knew the girl was practically shaking.
She felt like if she talked, she’d probably make the girl more sweaty, so she just gave her a little nod amd a soft smile without uttering a word.
“Leave us now” Kai said to the maid who hurriedly turned around and walked away.
“Don’t think about it too much, Elise. She’s just a young timid maid with no powers, she must be the one who’s more scared as she has nothing to defend herself with…”
“Of course, more so, it’d be easier for her to believe things like that.” Elise added, not trying to cut Kai’s sentence short.
Kai just nodded while sighing.
“Thank you for understanding, Elise,” he said to her.
“We should probably go to bed before more people come searching for you, Alpha,” she said sarcastically while trying to not laugh almost immediately after.
Kai did though, his laughter echoed through the woods, and when he heard it, he immediately stopped like he’d been caught.
This made Elise burst out laughing, Kai laughed with her too.
“Let’s go” he said while dusting his butt and stretching his knees.
Elise stood up too amd did the same.
He held out his hand for her to grab it.
When she hesitated, he took her hand into his.
“I want to hold you.” He said while rubbing his thumb on her palms in a circle motion.
Elise blushed and held his hands even tighter.
So they walked back into the house while swinging their hands together in forward and backward motions, each of them giggling a little.
When they walked to Elise’s room, Elise turned her back to her door while her hands were still locked into his, and stared deeply into his eyes.
His amber eyes shone brighter in the moonlight and it was just so beautiful that Elise couldn’t stop herself from staring at it openly.
Kai stood still, his eyes were drawn to her lips and he stared at it as she kept on closing and opening it in bits.
“You should go in,” he murmured shyly.
“I should,” she replied while smiling.
She let go of his hands and moved closer to him.
Her hands were raised to rest on his broad shoulders, using it as a guide to raise her heels so she’d get her mouth to his cheeks.
She closed her eyes as her lips brushed lightly on his cheeks.
His cheeks turned red in an instant, but she couldn’t see it in the moonlight.
“Goodnight Kai,” she said as she set a distance between them.
Kai just stared while blushing sheepishly.
“Would you be able to sleep?” Kai asked, while searching into her eyes.
She looked away shyly, while turning the door knob to her room.
“I should.” She said, while stepping into her room.
“Ohhh…” Kai said without finishing his sentence, she cut him off.
“Would you like to come in?” Elise murmured while staring at him with puppy eyes.
