CHAPTER 37

No!!!!! Elise screamed out from her sleep, panting heavily and sweating profusely. She had yet another dream again. This time, she didn’t remember it. But when she woke up, she was scared. She tried so hard to remember her dream, but she couldn’t. So she stood up and went to the toilet to take a piss. She yawned loudly while stretching on the toilet seat. “Hmm, my breath stinks.” She said while wrinkling her nose after she smelled her breath while covering her mouth and nose as she was yawning. After which she cleaned up and flushed. After placing the toothpaste on her toothbrush, Elise stared at the mirror in front of her. She hadn’t seen herself in weeks or months. That was the least of her problems. She started in the mirror while sighing as she started brushing her teeth. Her hair was messy and her face puffy. Looking at the mirror, a flash of her dream came through. She remembered seeing Kai. Kneeling down in his alpha suit or armor and he was crying over something. Or someone, maybe. This flashback scared her. “It’s just a dream, Elise.” She told herself, trying to dissuade herself from overthinking. Seeing Kai in tears even in the dream gave her goosebumps. She still had headache from how suddenly she jumped up from the dream and all her sweat. “What’s this about this time?… I’m tired.” She said aloud to herself, sighing. She hurriedly washed her face and styled her hair neatly. After which she got into a short skirt and mesh top. At least today, she didn’t want to look like what’s going on in her head. Especially since she was trying to reassure herself that the thing with Kai in her dream was just a dream and it won’t happen in real life. At least that was what she told herself, almost prayed about it even. Or maybe she dud mutter some prayers. Kai was the one person she cared about the most. It would hurt her to see him hurt. She thought about checking up on Kai before hesitating. “He’s probably busy.” She thought to herself. Elise stood still in the middle of the room, chewing on her lip. The image of Kai crying in her dream wouldn’t leave her head. It kept flashing at her, bits by bits. Everything in the dream— his shoulders shaking, his fists clenched. The way he looked like his entire world had just ended. She hated it. That dream had already stolen her peace this morning, and now it was trying to steal her mood for the whole day. “Elise,” she mumbled to herself while putting on her shoes. “Snap out of it.” She walked out of her room, deciding to at least get some breakfast or maybe talk to someone to help her brain reset. She passed a few pack members in the hallway. Some greeted her with polite nods. A few stared. She didn’t care today, she was getting used to it already. As she entered the kitchen, she met Nora. Nora was mixing something in a bowl, probably for the morning pancakes. Her apron was already stained, her sleeves pushed up to her elbows. She turned when she noticed Elise. “Oh—morning,” Nora said, raising a brow. “You look… nice this morning… heading out?” She asked, scanning her. Elise gave a weak smile. “I just felt like looking like a human being today.” Nora chuckled. “Fair enough…you want some tea?” Elise nodded and walked to sit by the kitchen counter. “You okay?” Nora asked as she poured hot water into two mugs. “You seem off.” “I had a dream.” Nora looked at her. “What kind?” “I don’t know… I can’t remember most of it… except one part of it” Elise stared down at her hands. “I saw Kai… he was kneeling… crying.” Nora paused admist staring her tea. “Crying?” “Yeah, he looked broken. I don’t even know what it was about, it all just felt soo… real.” Nora placed the mug in front of her. “You’ve been having dreams a lot lately.” “I know,” Elise said quietly. “I try not to read too much into them, but this one scared me. It wasn’t even like the others.” Nora wiped her hands on a towel and leaned on the counter, watching Elise closely. “Why don’t you check on him?” Elise hesitated. “He’s probably working.” “Even more reason, just check, you’re never a disturbance ti him Yunno?…” “I get it though, sometimes dreams mean something, sometimes they don’t—but if it’s eating at you this much, you might feel better seeing him with your own eyes.” Elise blew on her tea and nodded slowly. “Yeah… you’re right.” Nora smiled. “I know I am.” After a few more sips and some small talk, Elise stood and thanked her. She didn’t waste time heading toward the west wing, where Kai usually stayed when he wasn’t out on duties…. Her steps quickened as she walked. By the time she got to his quarters, she paused outside the door for a few seconds, then knocked. No answer. She knocked again, a bit louder this time. Still nothing. “Elise?” She turned. It was Jorah, one of the younger warriors. He was coming from the hallway with some scrolls in his hand. “Looking for Kai?” he asked. “Yeah… he’s not in?” Jorah shook his head. “He left earlier this morning.” “He went down to the village near the ridge, the one just at the edge of the southern woods.” Elise frowned. “Why?” “Something about the feral wolves. He said he wanted to talk to the villagers again, double-check some of their stories.” Elise crossed her arms. “Alone?” “He took Lucien with him.” Elise nodded slowly, her chest tightening just a bit. She thanked Jorah and turned away. Back in her room, she tried to keep herself distracted. She folded clothes that didn’t need folding. Rearranged her nightstand. Wiped down her dresser. But none of it worked. That same pressure in her chest kept coming back. She sat on the bed and pulled her knees to her chest while staring at the floor. “He’s fine,” she whispered to herself. “It’s just a dream, Elise… quit overthinking.” But was she? After a while, she stood up and paced the room. Then she sat again. Then she stood. “This is stupid,” she muttered and left the room again. She walked around the packhouse, hoping to run into someone who might’ve heard from Kai. But no one had. She even considered going to the village herself but stopped. She didn’t want to come off as obsessive. Instead, she decided to wait. By late afternoon, the skies had darkened a little. Clouds gathered like they were about to rain. Elise sat in the common room, tapping her fingers on the handle of the chair. The fireplace crackled, but it didn’t make her feel any warmer. The dream was still sitting on her chest. Then, out of nowhere— A loud scream echoed from the front of the packhouse. It was high-pitched. Urgent. Like someone calling for help. Elise jumped to her feet immediately and rushed toward the sound. She wasn’t the only one. A few others had already started running toward the entrance hall. “Move! Move!!” someone shouted from outside. Elise pushed through the crowd, and that’s when she saw it. Kai. He came rushing in through the front doors, soaked in sweat and dirt, his arms were wrapped tightly around his back, he was backing a person… Lucien. Lucien was unconscious. Bleeding. His shirt was ripped open and soaked in blood. Deep cuts covered his side, and one of his legs looked broken. His breathing was shallow, and his face was pale like death. “Someone get a healer NOW!” Kai barked, his voice hoarse but commanding. Elise froze for a second. Her eyes widened. Her heart dropped to her stomach. “KAI!” she screamed and ran forward as a few warriors rushed to take Lucien from his arms. Kai’s hands were shaking. There was blood on his face. Elise didn’t even realize she had grabbed his arm until he looked at her. His eyes were red—not from crying but from pure exhaustion and fear. “What happened?” she asked, almost whispering. His jaw clenched. “Ambush.” “By what?” He didn’t answer. Instead, he turned and followed the others who were carrying Lucien toward the healer’s wing. Elise followed, even though her legs felt like they were about to give out. The packhouse had gone into a panic. Voices were loud. People were running. But all Elise could focus on was the image burned into her head— Kai. He dropped to his knees. In pain. Just like her dream. And that was when the real fear set in. What if this was just the beginning? What if all her dreams in the past would come to pass? “Ohh God….” She muttered with her hands rested on her forehead as she bent down to console Kai.
