Chapter 3 – The First Steps to Survival
The morning air was crisp as Aria stepped outside her apartment. The sun shone softly, but for her, every ray was a countdown. Twelve months. Only twelve months to prepare for the apocalypse she remembered so vividly. Every second now mattered.
She pulled her coat tighter around her and walked to her car, clutching a notebook packed with lists and bunker blueprints. Each step she took toward the world outside reminded her of the frigid horror of her previous life—the frost, the betrayal, the biting hunger. But those memories were no longer paralyzing. They were fuel.

Finding the Perfect House
Aria had spent the previous week researching remote properties online. Cities were deathtraps when the Ice Apocalypse came. She needed isolation, natural barriers, and a property that would allow her to build an underground bunker without drawing attention.
After hours of searching, she found it: a two-story house on the outskirts of a small town, surrounded by dense pine forests and hills that rolled endlessly into the distance. No neighbors for miles, no visible roads leading directly to it. Perfect.
The house itself was modest. A simple exterior, a small garage, and a yard that was large enough for her plans. But underground, it would become her fortress.
She arranged a viewing immediately. Walking through the empty rooms, she visualized the bunker beneath. The basement could be expanded. The soil was firm enough for heavy concrete walls. Every detail she had sketched in her notebook could be realized here.
“This is it,” she whispered.

Planning the Bunker
Aria spent the next few days planning every inch of the underground shelter. From her previous life, she remembered every mistake she had made. This time, nothing could be left to chance.
The bunker would include:
• Reinforced concrete walls at least half a meter thick.
• Two steel blast doors—one at the entrance, one as an emergency exit.
• Generator and battery room with solar power backup.
• Water filtration and storage system, capable of purifying natural water sources.
• Hydroponic farm room for growing vegetables, herbs, and even small fruits.
• Medical supply room stocked with enough medicine and surgical kits for emergencies.
• Food storage for ten people to survive ten years.
Aria calculated how much she would need of everything. Canned food. Freeze-dried vegetables. Dried meat. Rice. Beans. Water purification tablets. Batteries. Heaters. Blankets. Winter clothing. Tools. Firearms.
She even drew the layout for sleeping quarters, living areas, and a small common room. Every inch mattered.

Securing Supplies
Money was her weapon now. In her previous life, lack of preparation had cost her everything. She couldn’t make the same mistake.
Aria began purchasing supplies quietly. She avoided buying in bulk from one store. Instead, she made small trips to different supermarkets, hardware stores, and online shops. No one questioned her; to the outside world, she was just a cautious shopper.
By the end of the first month, she had stockpiled enough for several months, hidden in her apartment and storage lockers.
Rice. Beans. Canned meat. Freeze-dried vegetables. Water containers. Heating equipment. Generators. Solar panels. Medical kits. Winter clothing. Blankets. Tools. Weapons.
Lily noticed the strange activity one day.
“Aria… you’re buying like a small army,” Lily said, eyes wide.
Aria smiled faintly. “It’s not an army. It’s survival.”
Lily paused. “If what you’re saying… if it’s real, I’ll help you. Whatever you need.”
Aria felt a surge of gratitude. Lily’s trust was invaluable. Together, they would make this work.

Finding Allies
Aria knew she couldn’t do everything alone. She needed people she could trust. Lily was the first, but she would need at least two more allies to manage the bunker efficiently: someone who understood machinery and generators, and someone who could help manage water systems and food production.
She thought back to her school days. Names floated through her memory. One stood out: Ryan Blake, the quiet boy who had always been observant and reliable. If anyone could handle the mechanical side of the bunker, it would be him.
Another person came to mind: Ethan Cole, Lily’s old school friend. Calm, practical, and resourceful—he could manage water systems and farming tasks.
Aria made a mental note: she would reach out to them when the apocalypse arrived. For now, the focus was on building, stocking, and securing the bunker.
⸻
Time Was Running Out
The clock was ticking. Every day brought her closer to the point of no return. She measured every hour carefully: how long to travel to the suppliers, how long to oversee the bunker construction, how long to transport food and water safely. She couldn’t afford mistakes.
The world outside was blissfully unaware of the storm that would hit in less than a year. People went about their lives as if nothing were coming.
Aria, however, had lived through it once. She knew the truth.
Every night, she lay in bed reviewing her plans. She imagined the icy winds, the snowstorms, and the betrayal she had survived before. It gave her focus.
“I won’t make the same mistakes,” she whispered to herself in the dark. “This time, I survive. I protect the people I care about. I live… no matter what.”
Her determination burned brighter than ever.
The storm was coming. And this time, she would be ready.
